To those affected by the fires around the country - hang tight mates & if any of you need help, please don't hesitate to ask. Shane & Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: EDWARD GRUNE Subject: Re: HMS Habakkuk In SMML2104 Jim Baumann was seeking information on the aircraft carrier/ice-island - HMS Habakkuk. Hi Jim: WARSHIP #18 (April 1981) has an article by Dr. William Wallace on the Habakkuk. It has some scaled General Arrangement drawings as well as some cross sections and propulsion unit scrap drawings. It would be very simple to scratchbuild a model of the Habakkuk from the drawings, but with the prototype at almost 2000 feet in length - the resulting 1:700 scale model would dwarf the diminutive pre-drednaught models which must already fill your shelves. If you can't locate a copy of the Warship article locally contact me off list and I'll scan the article and send it to you. Ed Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "George Peat" Subject: Ice Aircraft Carrier James, Get back yo me off group and I willscan and send you a copy of these drawings and the info I have in the model boats Magazine. Also for the question reference joint filler. I have used and still use a mixture of liquid polystyrene cement and old scrap plastic card into the jar. Allow this mixture to disolve and add what plastic scraps you have to thicken It brushes on well but again if you use too much at the one time it does disolve the material you are applying it to ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Brooks Rowlett Subject: Re: HMS Habbekuk..?? HABAKKUK was more the code name for the project than the actual ship name. It has been covered in an early *Warship Quarterly*, and occasionally on MARHST-L - you might check their archives for mention. It gets covered every ten years or so in *Popular Science* or *Popular Mechanics* magazine. It probably was also talked about at least once or twice on some History Channel or Discovery Channel show. Brooks A Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Vladimir Yakubov" Subject: Re: Chapaev & Sverdlov References There are two Chapaev/Sverdlov references. One as Lars Morskaya Kollektsiya series: http://www.armybook.com/summary.html?code=0102001235 and another the book "Legkie Kreysera tipa Chapaeve i tipa Sverlov" (Light Cruisers of Chpaeve and Sverdlov classes" by A.B. Morin. Unfortunatly it seems that both books are out of print and the chances of finding them are very low. I have the second book and if you want email me at yak_v@hotmail.com and I'll send you the scans. The best place to buy M-K in my experience is here: http://www.armybook.com/show.html?code=0102001 They are kind of slow (1-3 months delivery time) but they are reliable, easy, cheap and they even have subsription service. Aleksander II forecastle is planked in similar way: long strips fore/aft and planks atwartship but the stripes aren't paralel but form "sunrays" pattern fanning out towards the bow. Best wishes Darius ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Adrian And Jules" Subject: Re: HMS Habbekuk Jim, I too remember the article, with some basic drawings, unfortunatly my copy is in my parents loft back in the UK, I recall that the idea was to freeze a mixture of Ice and Wood pulp. And that the Airwing was to include Mosquitos or Sea Mosquitos. Still it would make a great model in 700. All the best Adrian Davies ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: acetone >> Acetone is an organic solvent, so use common sense with it. Have good ventilation and keep flames away. But it is not toxic (it is the main constituent in finger nail polish remover). Too much of it will start to soften the styrene. << Acetone is rather toxic, the fumes should not be inhaled in a closed space. Also it strips the oils from the skin and can cause problems with the skin on the fingers and hands. ALSO it is HIGHLY flammable. Has one of the lowest flashpoints of all the solvents, as I recall as low or lower than gasoline!! Be careful with it. Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Darren Scannell Subject: Re: HMCS Quebec Hull colour >> In photos I have of Quebec, she has a two tone gray hull. Any one know what model paints I can use to reproduce these colours? One colour photo I have Quebec is painted in what looks like the Shipside Grey used on the present CPFs; can any one put a date to this particular colour scheme. Also were Quebecs' wooden decking painted or holystoned? << Rolie, The RCN continued to use the old two tone colours until the late 1950s, then changed to the current grey. The St.Laurents, except the first couple, all came out in the new (current) colour. A friend at the Halifax ship yard claims the current grey has been changed to a slightly lighter shade, but I think this may be just be the normal variations from manufacturers. Canada used our own numbering system, then incorporated them into a Standard (1-GP-12C) and finally abandoned that and had the Federal Standards Board incorporate our colours as new ones in FS595. The two tone scheme was I-9 Hull and I-6 superstructure & upperworks. I-9 became 501-102 and is now FS16099. I-6 became 501-105 and is now FS26329. Humbrol had decent matches, Extra dark sea grey and light sea grey, but I don't know if they still do. The current colour was 501-109 and is now FS16480. I came up with a mix using Model master if you want it, let me know. It's so close, you'll have trouble telling it apart from the real thing. Decks until 2001 were 501-102/FS16099. Now they are standard US Navy deck paint which both the RN & RAN use, FS36076. Antifouling is a little harder to nail down. the usual reds were used, as well as grey. Currently a bright blue is on Athabaskan, unless she has been painted again. HTH, Darren Scannell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Lamar B. How much for the Furious? Allowing for potential delays and all ... Thanks Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: NeustadtDonau@aol.com Subject: Right Bloody Crash Greetings all: I recently experienced fatal equipment failure with my internet machine and have lost all data and saved addresses. There are several of you with whom I regularly communicate. John at Oxford, Guisto in Delibio, Andrey in Ufa and Andreas in Mannheim. Would you be so kind as to e-mail me at your convenience so I can get your addresses? On a sadder note, my great uncle, Alois Kammerer, died recently. He was a Kriegsmarine veteran. He served on the Leipzig and was a plank owner of the Tirpitz. He was aboard Tirpitz when she was sunk. He later served at Koenigsburg and was lucky to have escaped the encirclement on an S-Boat. He died from complications of hip replacement surgery. His last wish was for a sailor's burial at sea. I shall miss him terribly, but he will always be remembered. Thanks, John Collins Franklin, TN, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: clem Subject: Re: nichrome In the US nichrome wire is available from suppliers of repair parts for household appliances such as hair dryers, toaster ovens, etc. The nichrome heats up when power is applied. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: NeustadtDonau Subject: Deck Seams Thinned white glue makes an excellent filler for areas where sanding is impossible. Interior and exterior grade carpenter's glues also work very well and, generally, form a stronger bond. The exterior grade is water resistant after it dries Several applications may be necessary to completely fill the seam. I also use it to attach photoetch handrails. John Collins Franklin, TN, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Chuck Messer" Subject: Re: Iowa Markings >> Does anyone know when the US flag was painted on the #1 turret of the Iowa after she was recommissioned in 1984? Also, during the summer of '84, when she was down in the Carribean with the UNITAS XXV exercise off Venezuala, what was the position of the circle on the helideck? Was the circle on the center line or offset to port? << After reading that question a second time, I smacked my forehead and realized I had a book on the Iowa. From a look at the photos: One from 1985 shows Iowa with the flag on the #1 turret, with the circle centered on the helipad. A photo on the back cover shows Iowa with no flag and the circle is off to port. I could not find a caption that gave a date or context to the photo. The book is WARSHIP'S DATA #3, USS IOWA (BB61). I hope that's a start. Chuck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Roger Buckley" Subject: paint removal Was sold a model very cheaply today as it had a large red paint stain across one piece of perpex. Tried several things with no job then tried Amways kitchen cleaner fluid - 2 seconds, paint gone, no damage to the perspex. Works like magic. regards roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Dafuelmann Subject: Re: Furiously flabbergasted (Blush!!)
