They dropped the US FS colour in the 1990s and went to Extra Dark Sea Grey. The RAN dropped the FS colour last year and went back to Dark Admiralty Grey (Pewter as its known locally but DAG on the paint drums from International Paints!). The RN still uses DAG for their hanger decks. A piece of trivia, DAG was one of the British standard colours introduced in the first BS381C of 1930 as #32 Dark Battleship Grey. Another is #31 which was Light Battleship Grey, now called 631 Light Grey and is the RAN’s weatherworks colour. Extra Dark Sea Grey is a BS381C colour, 640, which was introduced as a new standard colour in the 1980 update of BS381C. It must be coincidence that it is a close match to the old colours. Has anyone got both the BS381C & FS 595 colour chips to see how close they are? Strangely in BS381C there are Medium, Dark & Extra Dark Sea Greys specified but no light sea grey. From memory of building winged things, Medium & Dark Sea Grey were RAF & RN aircraft colours not ship’s paint colours. The lightness of the RCN current colour may be due to the new paints being used. The RAN have for some time been using a low solar absorbing paint which has a gloss level of 15% compared to 90% gloss for the “old” paint. The new paint cuts down the infra red signature. One side effect of the new paint is that the colour the eye sees is dependent upon the angle of view eg three ships tied up line astern at the Cruiser Wharf viewed from Harry’s Café De Wheels will appear to the eye to all be slightly different colours when in fact they are the same colour. In an extreme case, if the angle of the ship to the viewer and the angle of the sun are “right”, a ship’s stern and bow will appear to be different colours. The paint type is also used by the RN & USN, so I imagine the NATO navies all use this type of paint. Gloss means exactly that, the RN specification for weatherwork paint is High Gloss. The sea & the sun do the rest to lower the gloss level. I associate dioramas with relatively large areas, difficult to encase. And with the observation balloon as well. These are a dream come true... Its great to be able to support manufactures that provide the odd balls. I can hardly wait to try that camouflage scheme. Ah, the pain of it.... Cheers George Hargreaves ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "David Edgerly" Subject: Re: Deck Seams I have been thinking about the deck seam question and was getting up the nerve to present my solution. As regards Tamiya 1/350 Battleships, I have been successful doing the following: -Remove the deck locating tabs for the forward deck from the hull. -Install the aft section, middle section butted fully to the stern. (I use Tenax so as to get a good bond with a little excess which I gently scrape off for a smooth seam) -After all is set up, install the forward deck section butted to the middle section. (also using an adhesive that provides a little excess weld-type seam to be gently scraped off and smoothed.) -At this point (after the deck section are completely dry) i insert a thin strip of styrene into the gap at the bow. sand this flush with the deck at usually, the railings will cover that area. This method has worked very well on the Iowa Class and Yamato but the Bismark needed a bit more finesse. I don't have the POW or KGV yet so I don't know for sure how it would work. I hope that this not so well written description offers an additional useful approach. Dave E ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Steven Bryson" Subject: Catapult seaplanes from ocean liners Hello, I can't remember if the thread was in this discussion group, and it may have already been mentioned, but I came across the second part (conclusion) of an article in the May 2002 issue of Sea Classics. The article, entitled "When Air Mail Was Shot From Ships! runs 10 pages, and includes photos. This part of the article deals with the Lufthansa airline and German ships. Can some one help me with the colors of the ship, and were I can find in the internet pictures of here, especially the bridge area ? With thanks Shalom Mor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: HGYL Subject: INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THE SEA I am toying with the idea of visiting the International Festival of the Sea which is being held this year in Leith on May 24th to 26th (Spring Bank Holiday weekend). Are any other List members likely to be there? Best wishes to all, Harold Lincoln ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Sanartjam Subject: Re: Book on Chapaev and Sverdlov Classes Hi, Thanks to everyone who responded both on- and off-list to my question about references about the Chapaev and Sverdlov classes! I appreciate it very much. Would anyone know where I might be able to purchase the Russian book on these two classes by A.B. Morin? I realize it is out of print, or at least seems to be, but you never know. Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Christopher Crofoot Subject: WTB: GMM Ward Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has a sheet of PE...well actually half a sheet. I'm looking for the USS Ward side of GMM Buckley/Ward sheet. I don't have a Buckley kit, so it seems like a waste to spend $40 for brass I won't use. I figured maybe somebody out there has the Ward half and no kit. So if that's you let's make a deal and split the cost.
