If you are then at pretty much the same time, we have chosen the same ship to model! Only difference is that I am doing mine as a 3D computer model. These are some early test renders.... http://users.senet.com.au/~mabrown/aussie_01.jpg http://users.senet.com.au/~mabrown/aussie_02.jpg http://users.senet.com.au/~mabrown/aussie_03.jpg I also have scoured the AWM, downloaded every image I could find. I've ordered some plans from "SMC" of the ship which I hope will help....I will let you know what they are like once they get here. Only $12US so they might be an option? I have a couple of books from "Topmill" publishing which include photos I didn't see at the AWM. The best of these are photos of the ship prior to scuttling. These can be misleading too though as the ship had been seriously pulled apart in key places. I would really like to hear your build-up reports on the model. Photos of this ship up close are really hard to find. Photos of models often help me out with the 3D but I haven't found any kit reviews etc on the web for this class. In a short space of time, the first Aussie looks like it received significant changes to her main superstructure. It is such an unusual design that it is difficult to wing it. Good luck! They have a great English version of their site and communication is no problem. It took about a week for them to dispatch the parts after I placed the order. http://jadarhobby.waw.pl/ Paul ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "bert" Subject: Re: Prinz Eugen - Naval German 101 Werner, not so easy! warrum, der Fraulein? M/F. For one that has English as a first language a ship would always be "She" or "It" For a person that has German for a first language A ship would Generally be "He" or "It". like everything there are the exceptions that prove the rule, Vide Der Fraulein. I believe that in german one would use der Bismarck der Prinz Eugen das U.boot die Zerstorer die freggatte etc.but when referring to Royal Navy ships it would be die ---all warships in French language are "le". as a generality. Falk Pletscher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: "Fouled" anchors Back when I had a small sailboat I had Danforth anchor which had a ring attached to the lower end. I used to affix a line such that one end was tied to this ring and the other end was tied to a capped one-gallon white plastic jug which floated above the deployed anchor. Thus I always knew where my anchor was, and also had a rough idea of the angle my anchor chain and line made with the bottom. This became useful when a trolling fisherman started to pass between my float and my boat. I was able to shout a warning to him about the location of my anchor and rode. He veered off. In addition, if the anchor should ever become fouled on the bottom (which it never did, fortunately) I could pull up on the float's line and (hopefully) sort of back the anchor out of its snag. That's the sort of thing, such as an insurance policy, a parachute, a spare tire, a spare key (in your wallet) for your car, and a hearse (hey, 4 out 5 isn't bad) one hopes to never get to use. That's where the Nautilus is currently berthed, and the most likely place to have that information. 'Sorry that I don't remember the exact name, but they're almost across the river from the Coast Guard Academy. The boat mounted two 6/53 deck guns and since I like to scratch build ships guns I need pictures or drawings or both of this gun. I have failed to find any info on the web and Floating Drydock does not have anything on it. Can anyone offer help on this? << Nautilus' sister ship USS Narwhal had identical 6 inch guns, and the guns were removed prior to scrapping. These guns both stand on either side of Dealey Hall at the US Submarine Base in New London, CT. A few years ago, I took several closeup pictures from different angles of these guns with a good quality 35mm camera. Email me off line, and I'll dig them out and send you hi res scans. My Supply Officer will enjoy that one. I'd have guessed COMNAVSURFLANT alone would have had that many PCs unaccounted for! :) Mike (heading to Norfolk, where maybe they don't have eight inches of fresh snow...) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Frank Allen Subject: Re: website with many fotos of German WW2 warships - Scharnhorst, NOT Bismarck Hi Emil, Yes, that is a great website (http://www.militaria-house.com). It has many interesting photos previously only available through crew photo albums, rate books, etc., as well as what appear to be private photos. You mentioned that you saw a photo of Bismarck with a light stern (image "rhein7"). I checked out the page on the USS Prinz Eugen (LOL!) and found the photo you were referring to. It is definitely/positively NOT Bismarck. It is actually Schlachtschiff Scharnhorst in her best known three toned paint scheme. The photo is mislabled. Indeed, the photo to it's left (rhein6) is also NOT from Rheinübung...the AAA mounting was not added atop "B" turret until Prinz's time in Brest (sometime before the "Great Retreat" AKA Channel Dash). Perhaps someone here can contact Klaus in German and let him know about these two minor errors? Frank http://hmshood.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "John Sutherland" Subject: Ex Brazillian RN WWII "H" and ex Turkish RN WWII "I "Class Hi all, Does anyone know definitively whether these six "H" (Harvester, Havant, Havelock, Hesperus, Highlander and Hurricane) and two "I" (Inconstant and Ithuriel) had the standard "H" class bridge or the modified bridge of the Hero, Hereward and the I class? The only shots I have seen are of the Hesperus and Hurricane. The angle is not good, nor are the quality of the shots and the first seems to have a modified bridge and the second a standard bridge. I would be surprised if there was a mixture! I also understand that the ex Braz H had only 3 4.7in guns (no "Y") and the ex Turkish I had quad not quin torpedo tubes. Correct? Anything else I should know? Directions to photos, etc?
