If you are contemplating building the Warspite I would recommend a copy of the" Anatomy of the Ship Warspite" by Ross Watton which will be invaluable when it comes to detailing your model. I am currently building the Fleetscale HMS Liverpool (Sheffield) and the AOT of the Belfast has come in extremely useful where similarity of armaments etc has occurred. Brian King has published an excellent book "Advanced Ship Modelling" which contains some very useful construction techniques of various aspects of the model ship. In addition you will find John Lamberts drawings for the secondary armaments extremely helpful although trying to construct an accurate reproduction of the quad pom poms is proving somewhat tedious. The Model Dockyard at Truro has a vast range of fittings and has a website catalogue at www.model-dockyard.com useful for anchor chains ladders etc.etc. You can obtain quite a few ready made fittings for your model but some leave a lot to be desired when it comes to detail and accuracy, you will probably end-up scratch building most of them. Hope this helps a bit. If you wish to you can contact me at rayguy@mweb.co.za Ray ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: roger.antrobus Subject: Fleetscale etc Hi All Thanks to everyone with their helpful comments especially Steve B and Steve S. Gary, Slough is not too far and I'd love to meet to chat especially soonish before I make the 'big decision'. Regards, Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: David Wells Subject: Leahy to Belknap conversion? Fellow SMMLlies: I plan to convert an old, wrecked 1/400 Monogram Leahy into a Belknap. The condition of the wreck makes a conversion of this sort seem like the most feasible way to restore this model. Does anybody know of a 1/400 scale 5"/L54 mk 42 gun that could be used for this conversion, whether polystyrene or resin? Also, the hull will require some modifications. In addition to making an SQS-26 dome on the bow, the hull will have to be "stretched" a bit. My books say that a Leahy is 533 feet, whereas a Belknap is 547 feet. How much of the difference is in the bow, (bow raked more sharply to clear the larger sonar dome) and how much is amidships? I have experimented successfully in the past with stretching model hulls amidships. Information on the dimensions of the hangar would also be appreciated. Reissue the cruiser book! ;-) For those who haven't seen the Raven & Roberts battleship book, it's excellent. I make extensive use of mine. I've only got photocopies of a couple of pages of the cruiser book, and those make me want to buy the whole thing!! << Hi, David. You'll find that the "Cruisers" book, presumably because of the number of ships to cover, does not go into nearly as much detail about updates and possibles as does the "Battleships" book. A very useful reference still, but not quite as much fun... And although I searched used-book sellers for it, I obtained my copy through the kind offices of another SMML-ie who had access to a spare. Allan Plumb ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Monitors Here's one for monitor fans. In 1872 Austria completed two monitors "inspired" by the American monitors of 1865 for use on the Danube River, and by the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 they had a total of six. After war began they added four more. This inland navy, along with German ships of similar design operated against the Serbians. For an account of these vessels and their actions along the rivers in the Danube area and including Bulgaria and Turkey, see a published article written by Fletcher Pratt and entitled "The Inland Navy of Austria, The Danube Monitors in the World War" in the September 1933 issue of U.S.Naval Institute Proceedings. If you can access foreign publications, see one written by O.R. Wulff "Die usterreichisch-ungarische Donauflottille im Weltkriege 1914-1918", Wien-Leipzig, 1934 for another detailed account. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Graeme Martin Subject: Building a Fleetscale HMS Warspite Hi Roger, I have one semi kit of Warspite in my attic that I hope to build after I complete a Fleetscale HMS Vanguard. They're nice hulls and the fittings you get are OK. Make sure you purchase Anatomy of the Ship, Battleship Warspite by Ross Watton. All you need to know there about the ship in WW2 and earlier versions. If you cant find one, I have a spare copy I will sell you at a nominal rate. I built a 1:128 scale HMS Warspite on an ABCO hull years ago in her 1928 version and it looked great as a glass case model. Big enough to clutter with as much detail as you want. There is a very good John Haynes, HMS Queen Elizabeth in the Science Museum, London for reference. She differed from Warspite somewhat in her secondary armament. Anyway write me if you want for further information at kiwdownunder58@yahoo.com.au and I can exchange more information with you. Cheers, Graeme Martin. Auckland, New Zealand (home of the America's Cup for another day!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: NAS4853 Subject: Re: Ex Brazillian RN WWII "H" and ex Turkish RN WWII "I "Class Checking the book AMAZON to IVANHOE that I previously mentioned, the six "H" (HARVESTER H19, HAVANT H32, HAVELOCK H88, HESPERUS H57, HIGHLANDER H44 and HURRICANE H06 and two "I" class INCONSTANT H49 and ITHURIEL H05) Did have the modified bridge of the HERO H99, HEREWARD H93 and the "I" class. The INCONSTANT (H49) and the ITHURIEL (H05) were initially being built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow for the Turkish Navy (as MUAVENET and GAYRET) but were requisitioned and completed for the Royal Navy. INCONSTANT was handed over to the Turkish Navy on 9th March 1946 after four years with the R.N. She was subsequently discarded in 1960 by the Turkish Navy. ITHURIEL was extensively damaged by bombs at 00.50hrs 28th Nov. 1942 whilst berthed at Bone following the TORCH landings. She was subsequently towed back to Plymouth via Gibraltar and then to Bo'ness for scrapping on 13th Aug. 1945. The Royal Navy destroyer ORIBI was handed to the Turkish Navy as replacement for the Ithuriel and was given the name GAYRET. The ex Brazilian "H" class vessels were initially fitted with only 3 x 4.7" guns, one 3" AA gun, machine guns and four Lewis guns although HARVESTER is shown in the book photographed in May 1942 with a Hedgehog in the A gun position. There is so much detail, history and lots of photographs of ALL the above ships available in the book AMAZON to IVANHOE to be printed here so you can see its worth getting hold of a copy if you can. Hope that this small amount of data is of help. Norman SELLS Tenterden Kent (UK) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "James Kloek" Subject: Buffalo SMMLcon 2003 We have had 10 feet of snow here on the south shore of Lake Ontario, and another half foot is due tomorrow. But yesterday was our fourth straight day with no snow, so Darren Scannell and I took the opportunity to visit Buffalo (on the shores of Lake Erie) home of Noreastcon 2003 and Buffalo SMMLcon 2003. We visited the Naval Park, home of the USS Little Rock, the USS The Sullivans, and the USS Croaker, and also the hotel where Noreastcon will be held. We came away with some real enthusiasm. Noreastcon will be held May 2 and May 3. Things open at noon on Friday with registration and 70 tables of vendors, including many of interest to ship modelers. Seminars and demonstrations will begin Friday evening. Saturday morning registration, the vendors, and seminars and demos continue. Judging is Saturday afternoon, and an awards banquet will be held Saturday night. The last time Noreastcon was held in Buffalo, 1999, they had over 900 people so this is going to be a significant event. Darren and I are working on events for us SMMLies. There is good news and bad news about visiting HCMS Haida. The good news is that she is not in Toronto, but just across the border from Niagara Falls. The bad news is that she is being worked on, and not generally open to the public. Darren stopped yesterday, and they may be willing to take a small group to see her, but it depends on several things. Darren will stay close to that, if the visit comes off, it will have to be Friday. The Naval Park in Buffalo will be open, and we talked to the curator yesterday. He will arrange our own group tour at a discount rate ($3.50 each) through all three ships. At the end, we can have use of the Admiral's room on the Little Rock. He even told Darren he could bring along a case of fine Canadian brew. This looks like a good Saturday activity. So it looks like it will be a good time. Let us know if you will be attending, and Darren and I will be posting further details as the time comes closer. I'm most concerned with hulls and lower hulls. Some things I'm especially interested in right now are: 1) 1/700 Atlanta class cruiser hulls (CLAA) either Skywave/DML/Dragon/Revell or Matchbox. 2) 1/700 Skywave/DML/Dragon/etc. Charles F. Adams class DDG hull 3) 1/535 Lindberg Rudderow/Butler class DE. 4) Other old Aurora, Revell, Renwal, or Airfix wrecks. I've got lots of weird stuff to trade, including a nearly complete Skywave E-3 set. Please contact me off-list at dave "dot" wells "at" att "dot" net. "There seems to be something wrong | David R.
