Thank you, Keith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "hoeard Subject: USS Saratoga This is in reply to Derek Wakefield's request for info about the book on the USS Saratoga. I think the book you are looking for is "USS Saratoga CV-3" by John Fry and published by Schiffer publishing Ltd. 77 Lower Valley Road Atgien, PA 19310 (610) 593-1777 This info was taken from the book so I don't know if it is still correct. The book is about each of the ships commanders and has many interesting photos that could be of use to ship modlers. I found it to be interesting and a very good history of the ship itself. very sad ending though Howard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "John Sutherland" Subject: HMS Glorious (at loss) Hi all, In the process of building the HP model (nice kit) as at time of sinking. I noticed that they provide only whalers and cutters for her and thought that can't be right - surely she had some motor boats or pinnaces. However, I must admit the photos I have seen (in Chesneau and in Hobbs) seem to confirm HP's choice. However I still remain sceptical! Comments? Best regards John Sutherland ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "John Sutherland" Subject: Book wanted Hi all, I spoke too soon the other day - the book I ordered turned out to be sold before my order arrived. I have searched high and low (and through the Internet) with no success. If any one knows where I can find a copy of this please let me know. Amazon to Ivanhoe by John English. Many thanks John Sutherland in a very hot and muggy Porirua New Zealand ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: Saratoga References and 1/350 carriers Hi Gang, I think the book Derek is looking for is simply entitled "USS Saratoga CV3" by John Fry. This book, ISBN 0-7643-0089-X is 161 pages long, and each of the 20 chapters is named for the various ship's Captains, with that chapter representing the period the Captain was in command. Lots of good, clear B+W photos. List price $39.95. I bought this a few years back. Changing gears to the subject of 1/350 carriers, I was thumbing through my local hobby shop's new catalogs and it is "anticipated" that there will be a lot of releases to satisfy our appetites. We all know of the Trumpeter Essex. But Trumpeter also has a drawing of a Lexington class carrier predicted for 2004. Speaking of Lexingtons, a company called Panda Models has a USS Lexington, CV16, with an angled deck in their catalog. They also list a USS Intrepid, presumably the same basic kit with an angled deck. I seem to recall another company announced a Lexington class carrier, but I could be wrong. Same goes for a 1/350 Arleigh Burke, but that may have been covered here already. I was overwhelmed by the number of ships anticipated to be released. Let's hope they follow through, and please, spend the money for these kits. That's how you send a message that the product will be successful. Lack of sales = lack of interest = lack of models. Interestingly, they're all by Asian manufacturers. Hopefully, but doubtfully, this will send a message to US model manufacturers to consider new subjects and diversify. I for one would be glad to give my money to a Korean model manufacturer, partly to thank them for taking a risk and producing such different models. Seriously, I am so sick of seeing the Monogram Huey Hog repackaged, year after year, or the Revell USS Missouri. And tonight I saw a couple of other "new" releases, namely the Monogram Wright Brothers Flyer, and the Revell USS Andrew Jackson. Nice, but they've been around for 30 years. I know, I know, they sell. But somewhere a long time ago the model company took a chance and released those models as new models and re-releases, without knowing for sure how they'd do. Please, no lectures on Economics, I got that in Grad school. It's just these American companies exemplify what's wrong with American manufacturing: Overhead, including union labor, drives up the cost, so there's no room for anything but guaranteed success. That's why so many hobby companies have their "limited edition" programs these days. Well, I'll get off my soapbox for now. I just get so annoyed sometimes! Rod ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Marc Flake Subject: Re: Saratoga Reference Sorry for the belated reply, my ISP and Shane's server are not on speaking terms on some days, so I'm not getting all the SMML volumes. I'm trying to keep up in the archives. Derek is thinking of a book devoted solely to the Saratoga. He is right. I have "USS Saratoga, CV-3, An Illustrated History of the Legendary Aircraft Carier 1927-1946," by John Fry, published by Schiffer, ISBN: 0-7643-0089. After a forward and Chapter One, all the rest of the book is divided up with a chapter for each captain. Care is taken to select photos pertinent to the period of time covered in the chapter. Not a *must have,* except for Saratoga-philes like me. Marc Flake ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: clem Subject: Borneo 1945 What color were the amphibious tractors that landed the Aussies on the beach at Balikpapen Borneo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: John Kutina Subject: The power of precision http://www.thesunlink.com/redesign/2003-03-01/nationworld/86006.shtml ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: Photo Op Offer >> I know that there are a lot of good photo references both in print (thank you Classic Warships), and on the net for the U.S.S. Texas, but I have an opportunity that I thought I'd make good use of and share with my shipmates here on SMML. << Bruce, Thank you for your support of my publishing efforts. I know you and the Boy Scouts will have a great time. Fellow modeler Don Preul and myself spent five days aboard that wonderful warship and shot 17 rolls of film there. That's 17 times 36 exposures per roll. That would be 612 photos. That is a 'ol bunch 'o pics! Yes, we still want to go back and shoot more! Have fun!
