Just thought I'd add this lil bit of info. Best, Jim Chaconas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "RUSSELL SMITH" Subject: Re: Saratoga has Arrived Derek, If its the 1/700 version whats up with it is that I bought mine in 1974. So, it just isn't up today's standards. Back then I was very happy to get it and with the fact that it had more detail than most models then and that there was so many models to the same scale. I never worried about the fact that it wasn't perfect. Of course, there weren't any after market parts either for about twenty years too! But pulling it out now and looking at it, I would have to say that I would be very glad if they would retool it as they have many other of the 1/700 scale lately. Of course too, there are much better references now also. Have fun with it. Regards; Russ Smith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: HMS Anson deck color Well, the safest bet is always to refer to photos, IF you can find them. By 1945 ANSON was painted, IIRC, in Admiralty Standard camouflage. The instructions for that scheme called for all decks--including wood decks--to be painted B-15. Derek Wakefield Re: SARATOGA kit by Fujimi. It may be quite informative for you to go to the STEELNAVY Homepage, click on Whats New, and read up on Dave Millers excellent review, callled the ABCand Ds of the Fuji Lex and Sara kits. Derek, those molds are probably older than you are, made in the mid 70s....and back then they were State of the Art compared to what we have today. They were full of innacuracies and had problems here and there, but its all we have currently in 700 scale plastic. The platform catwalk between funnel and bridge..... have you got five minutes and a strip of styrene to MAKE ONE? I did on mine. And I sanded down the knee high flight deck dotted line markings from bow to stern......is it within your grasp to do that too? You have been modelling for years.....Ive talked to you before, ....on these kits, fix what you can, modify what you can, enhance them with brass sets if you can, camoflauge paint them--thats always impressive, and leave it alone. The 350th kit of LEX and SARA are due out in plastic by Trumpeter, so they say, in a year or so......they wont be flawless either, but certainly fixable. They might even miss the platform between the funnel and bridge....a good modeller can fix that. As you yourself say, ya gotta have fun with it........I had a LOT OF FUN BUILDING MY FUJIMI SARA and LEX 25 YEARS AGO......and I never trashed it cuz I was so freakin happy to have these terrific, odd looking carriers in 700 plastic....Ray D. The design, per their sheet shows the scheme carrying over onto the deck. The photos didn't show that, could be a number of reasons for that, but I never saw a trace of it. The Floating Drydock sheet order number is CF 77 CA 24 Class. Roger Torgeson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: SMAtouche Subject: Re: Gun Plot--USS Yorktown Ned. The confusion I think comes about because Gun Plot Just changed and up dated their web pages. You can use the first URL I posted, but now to get the link to USS Yorktown web site takes to much time and mouse clicks so just type into the new main page. < http://www.gunplot.net > Go to the left side of that main page and scroll all the way down Gun Plot links and click, then on the right side of the new page type in USS Yorktown hit search then scroll down to tribute to USS Yorktown and you are there. Or go direct to Peters site by < http://www.geocities.com/karetkamidway >. The only reason I went the long way was I found the Gun Plot site very interesting and thought other smmlies might enjoy looking it over it is one heck of a site. Paul ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Mike C" Subject: Waterline display angles Try some of the tricks used by artists in paintings. Visual elements are arranged in a 'V' or 'X' pattern to lead the eye around the frame, using the intersection of the legs as a focal point. For diorama purposes, this would mean the model forms one leg, and some other item on the base (small boat, swell or distinctive wave peak, etc.), form elements that keep the viewer's eye moving inside the frame, rather than just following the length of the ship and off to the next diorama. Good compostion is a tricky thing, but if it looks static and boring to you, it will be the same for others who see it. Have fun, Mike C ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Jmsrl1990 Subject: PSM Hi guys and gals; Is PSM gone? I heard a rumor that Dan Jones had decided to stop publication of his fine magazine. I did recently receive Issue #28 and am wondering if this was the finale. I surely hope not. Jim Layman Hi Jim, Yes, unfortunately PSM is no longer being published. Regards, Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "David Clark" Subject: NKL-27 "reconnaissance and patrol river semiglider" I am building the AER 1/72 "Army Sea-Glider PG-117 and ZiS-5V Soviet Army Truck." The Sea-Glider PG-117 is actually an NKL-27 "reconnaissance and patrol river semiglider" (semiglider is probably not the best translation) and PG-117 is the pennant or vessel number. This is a resin kit (the ZiS-5V is injection-moulded plastic) and, apart from a little filler here and there, it is assembling quite well. NKL-27s had a crew of two; engineer-gunner and commander, and were armed with one 7.62mm "Maxim" machine gun. They were not prominent in action and their most famous operation was on 8 April 1945 when eleven of them participated in the Spree River crossing by the 5th Shock [breakthrough] Army. The NKL-27s were transported to the eastern bank of the Spree near Berlin by trucks (model not recorded but AER says they were ZiS-5s). After midnight, the trucks approached the shore and the crews unloaded the boats. PG-111 transported the first landing group of fifteen scouts to the western bank at 1.45AM. PG-117 is mentioned in the account of the crossing only once; its crew (commander Sgt Kazakov and gunner Chernykov) rescued the crew of a T-34 that was hit by the Germans right in the middle of pontoon bridge. The T-34 caught fire and exploding ammunition destroyed both the tank and the bridge. Anyway, my questions are: 1. Where can I get suitable engineer-gunner and commander crew figures? 2. What uniforms would the crew have worn? Note that AER is about to release another 1/72 river gunboat. The box art details aren't very clear on the available image but there are two crew figures in a naval uniform. If they are correct, it shouldn't be too difficult to modify other plastic figures.
