I use this as a final varnish to get a flat finish with a hint of gloss to keep it alive - personal preference. You can adjust the mixture until you get one you like. Ken Goldman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: New Model Website Hi All I have at last managed to stitch together some pictures on current models in a website. I'd like to invite any of you to take a look. Any reactions from so knowledgable a body would be very welcome. To give you a taste, the current set of pictures include: Scratchbuilt Vosper 70' MTB Scratchbuilt Hunt Class Escort Destroyer WEM's excellent Type 22 Frigate, HMS Brave Some bits from a selection of conversions and detailing of Revell's Schnellboote Go to www.d-taylor.dircon.co.uk The site looks forward to your visit. All the best Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Swastika orientation I am disappointed that I haven't seen any responses to my query about the alternate orientations of the swastika emblems used by the Nazis. There must be a reason, I'm sure it wasn't just whimsy. Aside from the fact that the logo could be incorrectly displayed on models, a curious mind wants to know. C'mon SMML people, que pasa? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: ALROSS2 Subject: Re: Russian ship Web site Speaking of Russian sites..., I picked up a Russian language book on MTBs from a company called Atlantic Crossroads (www.collectrussia.com). They have a number of additional Russian language books on Russian and Soviet vessels that I have not seen before. For those with an interest in this area, it might be worth a look. I have no affiliation with...etc. :-} Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Bill Livingston" Subject: Re: HMS Lion Plans I have the Norman Ough plans in 1:192 of HMS Lion. In fact I have just made two copies for two people and sent one off (the other has yet to send me their postal address, so if you are reading this Pavel....). Email me direct on bill.livingston@linn.co.uk I'll do this at cost plus postage which will be around $5.00 !!!!! I'm in Korea and Japan for two weeks after this weekend and am unlikely to have time to get them done before I go... But if you are patient I will help you out. I would love to convert those espoides of "Adventures in Scale Modeling" because they don't show that on tv anymore along with other forgotten shows that I've collected. I like to collect. Craig ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: Enterprise (CVAN-65) - the next generation of questions! Can any one advise me about what angle (relative to the vertical, e.g 'x' degrees off the vertical, or whatever, as long as I can relate it back to the model) Enterprise's four rudders are mounted at? Can't really work this out from my plans, and I have seen models with rudders at a variety of interesting non-perpendicular angles. The one photograph I have of Enterprise in dry dock shows the propellors and shafts, and seems to show the aft pair of rudders with no angle (straight up and down) but I can't make out the first pair. Also, can someone advise me what the standard spacing of the deck tie-downs (at full scale) on the flight deck should be? regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: D Wakefield Subject: Re: Saratoga has Arrived First off, mucho thanks for the feedback. Appreciated as always. Russ, The '74 part is what I wasn't aware of. Hmm, perhaps I shouldn't be that surprised. Ray, Found the article. Boy, that was a disenchanting read! FYI, I just turned 40 last week, so the molds are 9 yrs younger than me (I thought they were newer, thus...) I'm just getting grouchy/persnickety in my old age. I already figured I'd have to either sand or chisel the deck markings. Those were like, WAY too obvious. Similarly, I already knew sheet-styrene = catwalk, I was just disappointed it wasn't included. Now that I've learned all the other probs, nothing is surprising me. Some of these remind me why I keep putting off getting that Tamiya Kumano (I keep hoping for a new mold release). Okay, I haven't built a model in awhile. My focus/interest (fun stuph) has been studying/researching for the last upteen years (one of the main reasons I sub to this list). This in it's own odd way is at times more fun than building the kits themselves. I confess, this was the first model box I've opened in going on a year and a half owing to way too many real-life probs that have been plauging/haunting me. I sold off a good portion of my collection last summer, having decided to only focus on the subjects that had really stuck in my head. This way, fewer projects, but projects I can throw a lot of effort into. I know, I know, I know, I KNOW...get head out of books, put knife, sanding paper, glue, etc to plastic/resin...it must be done. But first... ^_^ And there lies in at least part of my dilemma...which hobby to pursue this week (writing, webmastering, modeling, etc, etc, etc.) Too much on my plate these days (and work just tossed me a major bone last night on top of it all). Based on that article, I think I can fix some of the issues, but I'm going to have to accept less than perfection. The prob with ship models is I get really anal really fast, and if I know something is wrong, it drives me absolutely, positively, certifiably bonkers. Perfectionism is my curse (or so my councellors keep telling me). Derek Wakefield ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Colin Ritchie Subject: Matting future/Klear One approach to adding decals to a matt model, using Future/Klear is to adopt the approach of AFV modellers. Rather than glossing the entire model to add a few decals, soak the decals as normal once the decal is wet, and clear of the backing, dip it in a saucer of Klear, remove some of the excess on a paper towel, and then apply it. Once applied, mop up the excess Klear with a cotton bud. Then once the Klear is dry, dust the area where the decals have been applied with a good matt varnish, the Polly scale Matt acrylic varnish is by far the best, HTH Colin Ritchie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Keith Butterley Subject: Warship Books announcement Hi all, Back by popular demand and due in May: British Battleships of World War Two - The Development and Technical History of the Royal Navy's Battleships and Battlecruisers from 1911 to 1946 by Alan Raven and John Roberts.
