I decided to try making my own photoetch detail parts. Yes, I did purchase the ones that were available from Nautilus.com, as well as new resin parts. I used CorelDraw 8.0 to generate the graphics,, and there's a fellow here in Buffalo, NY who can create either negatives or positives from the CorelDraw files (up to 6000 dpi). Now come the problem: I bought a kit from Datak to sensitize the brass sheet, develop and etch it. The results were spectacularly unsuccessful. Plan "B" is to use a dry photoresist laminate, using an office-type laminating machine. Is there any one out there who has done photoetching at home? if so I could use some tips. I've visited Randy Gordon-Gilmore's site: http://www.prototrains.com/, and got a lot of insight there. Hope to hear from someone...this kit could really be an awesome model with just a few more additions. N E Onaitis P.S. Yes it has finally stopped snowing here in Buffalo, NY. NEO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Darren Scannell Subject: Signal flag codes Hi all, I remember a while back people discussing the use of signal flags and how to use them. I came upon this site, http://home.earthlink.net/~mcmillanj/signals/Signals.html#history and it has an excellent description with lot's of examples, including a very in-depth review of how replenishments at sea are signalled. I hope it helps those who want to make a diorama. Cheers, Darren Scannell PS: Let's see some more interest in the Buffalo SMMLiecon!!! Come on people, let's have some fun!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Graeme Martin Subject: http://www.hlj.com/ hi Detlef. Check out http://www.hlj.com/ it's Hobylink Japan. they have pretty much everything you might need in the way of ships kits etc. cheers, Graeme Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: THEGAVEL Subject: Re: Striking The Colors >> I seem to recall a couple of USN ships surrendering to CSN ships during the American Civil War, but I can't remember the details off the top of my head, and my references are packed away, awaiting a new bookcase. << Excellent recall, CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads vs Cumberland was one, although Cumberland reraised flag. Several ships changed hands on the Mississippi as I recall which presumes surrender.... John Gavel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Peter Subject: mail order in English from Japan Regarding the question about mail order in ENglish from Japan, the best place to start is HobbyLink Japan: http://www.hlj.com/ Their whole business is sending Japanese kits to places outside of Japan, and they work in English. Here is another place that might help: http://www.rainbowten.co.jp/english/ I have seen lots of positive comments on Hobbylink but do not know much about Rainbow Ten's service. I can say that Rainbow Ten exists, as I have been to the huge store, just 20 minutes walk from Tamiya Headquarters in Shizuoka, Japan. Hope this helps, Peter ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Norbert Onaitis" Subject: PHOTOETCH RAILINGS to:"Stephen Varhegyi" I found this method in a magazine article...sorry, don't remember when...it advised painting the ship first. Then lightly sand both sides of the railing (carefully!) with 600 grit W/D paper, untill a nice gloss is achieved. Next bend & fold to conform to the curves of the ship.I use vinyl gloves when I do this-keeps the skin oils off. Also, I bought a "Hold 'N Fold tool for this step...really works well, Then prime and paint the railing. Next, tack in place with Cyano-acrylate (I made an applicator from a sewing needle-point imbedded in a dowel, with just the tip of the eye ground off....it picks up miniscule amounts of glue. When it gets clogged up, I burn it off with a match, wipe with a rag,) When the whole railing's tacked in place go back and glue down the length of the rail. It's tedious, but looks nice. Thanks in advance << Just try www.hlj.com Highly recommended! I made the best experiences, even when importing Kits to germany. Hope it helps Udo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Chuck Messer" Subject: Oscar 2 Class Model I am currently working on the Zvezda 1/350 model of the K-141 Kursk. Actually, it could be used to portray any Project 949A boat as far as I know. This is a superb kit, much better than a 1/400 model I built a little while back. The surface detail is crisp and delicate - so delicate some of it could be obliterated with one swipe of the sandpaper. Some details disappear in the molding process, such as all but one of the torpedo tube doors. Parts fit is acceptable, with the worst probelms being the fit between the top and bottom hull halves and the fit of the missile hatches, if you want to glue them in the closed position. I do have a few questions: The kit has the missile hatches as all one big piece, covering all 12 missile tubes on each side. Is that correct, or do they only open one segment to expose two tubes at a time. If I were to display the hatches open, how would it look? What about colors? I've seen models with black on top and grey below the waterline with a white stripe at the demarkation between the two. Is that correct, or is it all black, or black over red? The model also has four fin-like protrusions on either side of the aft hull. I assume they are scoops or intakes for the coolant system or the condenser. Is that what they are? I can't tell from the instructions what the angle should be, although they seem to position naturally in a downward angle from the horizontal. True? Are there some good sources of info on the Oscar 2? What I'm getting so far is a bit spotty. Thanks, Chuck P.S. : For about $23.00 US this is one hell of a good buy. Unless someone has found some major problems with the kit's accuracy, of course. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Don Macdonald" Subject: Japans LSTs To every body that help me in looking for infomation on the WW 2 LSTs of Japan's Thank you you did it agin in HELPING SO MY THANKS GOES OUT TO ALL OF YA!!! The book is written in Polish, of which I know zilch. The text I can live without but the words on the drawings and plans are very important. I have found an 'on-line dictionary' so have managed to translate a lot of what I need but I am not able to translate the following: poklady dzwig glownego, glownej, glownym kal lodzi lodziowy osmioulufowej plywak podstawie poklad relingu sciany sredniej swiatlo wiezyczka ze Is there someone amongst us who can please help me? Regards, Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: Korean war era coast guard cutters - colour of depth charge racks? My Revell Taney/Campbell is completed now to the point where I have to contemplate the colour of fittings. One puzzle is the colour of the depth charge stern railings and 'K' gun reload racks (as I am modelling Campbell circa 1951). My newly arrived copy of Scheina has a clear picture of the Richey (Edsall class DE operated by the Coast Guard during this period) with black-looking stern rails and 'K' racks - in tone much darker than either the buff-painted areas aboard the cutter, or what I presume is the dark (ocean?) gray of the depth charges. I also have a photo of Campbell circa 1951, which also shows very dark painted stern rails. Can any experts, ex-coasties etc advise me about the colour used during this period, if not then I will probably just use a scale black. I note that my ancient Revell instruction sheet recommends black FWIW. I just don't want to find out afterwards that they were painted red, green or pink. Also, were the life rafts and life rings carried at this time international orange or red or some other colour? BTW, for those looking for a nice easy coat white, I finally settled on Floquil Reefer White, which sprayed well and coated solidly without obscuring (just as well, given that I probably have to go back and repaint the rails and racks). A touch of Floquil retarder helped it to smooth out in the relatively warm weather and low humidity we have had of late. TIA Steve Canberra, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Franz Aigner GmbH" Subject: looking for books Steven Boulton A few days ago Richard Wolf answered the same question om j-aircraft.com: >> In Response To: source for "Anatomy of the ship TAIHO" by R. Wolf? (richard aigner) The cover depicted on Ed's site IS what I'm using on my drafts. But the Tamiya box art will not be used in the final version. Sorry to give the impression that the book is released. Believe me, I wish it was done. But it only gets better with time. 2004 will be the 60th anniversary of Taiho's birth and death and will certainly be the year of the Great Phoenix. I believe that my book will be but a part of the celebration. (Don't ask, just anticipate.) << So we have a few more months to go. Any age/resissue is fine, and I am more interested in the contents than the box, so damaged box is also OK. Will consider partially-built kits as well. I prefer to deal directly with the seller and not go through Ebay.
