You surely don't mean that this is a correct translation: << Of course not! Even with my limited French I could have rendered a reasonable translation. I always forget that a sense of humour is neither universal nor a god given right. My apologies if you feel offended. Sincerely, John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Scollay Square What is the world coming to? I find it difficult to believe that no SMML sailor has a comment about Boston's pre 1950 Scollay Square, as described in the website I recently posted in SMML. Alas!!!!! Franklyn PS Actually I did receive one expression of fond recollection, off-post. The respondent was a crew member of a WW 2 sub chaser, which is in keeping. The Crawford House's Sally Keith would be disappointed that there are only two of her tassel aficionados remaining. Sic transit gloria mundi. Alas and alack!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Bill" Subject: Trumpeter Nimitz Hello List, I have heard rumor that Trumpeter will be bringing out its 1/350 Nimitz next. Anybody out there heard anything?? I hope this isn't an enlarged version of that 1/500 scale kit.. regards Bill Code ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Topy Yester" Subject: Re: Budapest To Shane, Stephen-Istvan and Terry, ...and I live here... no further comments :-))))) Zsolt Szalanczi from Budapest, Hungary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Poutre, Joseph A" Subject: Re: USS Iowa after deck >> This is my first time writing to SMML. I served on the USS IOWA just before it was decomissioned in 1990. I recently got the Tamiya 1/350 USS NEW JERSEY, and, much to my horror, the rear deck (aft of Turret 3) is different from my ship. Does anyone know how I can correct this? << New Jersey had some rot problems with her aft teak decking, so instead of replacing those parts they just "paved over" the trouble areas. Her sisters' decks were in better shape and so retained more of the after decking. The only cure is to either recarve the flat areas to match the decked areas, or to replace those sections with new strip plastic or very thin wood strips. Some builders choose to replace the entire wooden deck areas with the latter. Most Ar 196's did not have a splinter scheme. Because most were on Capital ships, they were painted a single colour top with the standard helblau undersurfaces. I have a model of a 1/48th kit of the 196 still waiting to be done. It seems like a nice kit from the Czech Republic. Happy Modeling! The inconvenient is the page is in russian characters and an interpreter is needed. Try http://submarine.id.ru/thumbs/941/index.shtml There are an interesting article about rigging in http://www.smmlonline.com/articles/rigging.html that might be useful for your work ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: donald p morgan Subject: Re: Source of 0.005 stainless steel wire For anyone interested in small diameter stainless steel wire, try your local music store. Guitar and banjo strings come in a number of small diameters, each coiled up in a plastic envelope. My own favorite for 1/1200 scale pole masts is .005 diameter. When removed from their package, there is some inherent curvature remaining, but in short lengths, this should not be a problem. Dragon which use to be DML is planning to release this year two kits of the USS KIDD DDG-993 in 1/350th scale. The kit numbers are #1014 for the USS KIDD and #1015 as ROC (Taiwan) Kidd class. The USN is supposely selling all 4 ships to Taiwan. I recall that 10 yrs ago DML proposed this kit of the Kidd but canceled it. My source is the 2003 Dragon catalogue. Craig ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "lamkeel" Subject: Any ideas please Hello All As you may know I am working on the drawings for Volume 3 of Allied Coastal Forces of WW II. I have hit a problem that I am unable to resolve to my satisfaction. In 1939 the company of Swan Hunter and William Richardson built as a private venture a steel hulled 110 ft long overall motor yacht called M Y Tarret. She was a special design and powered by two new diesel engines. Our Lords at the Admiralty heard about it and decided that it just might be what they were looking for as an Anti-Submarine warfare patrol vessel. They requested that it be "steamed" down south to Portland for a selection of A/S trials to see how it panned out. I know this was done as I have a report of the engine trials, and three photographs of Motor Yacht 'Tarret' at sea. I also have a drawing of her engine room layout showing her new diesel engines. Now the theory seemed good. Here was a brand new design, built at no expence to the government, and capable of almost 30 knots, brought south to the Anti-submarine school to see what she was capable of. O.K. so far and the idea sounds good!. It would seem that the hull design was good and produced a seaworthy and dry hull. BUT, the problem was with the inherent design faults in the new diesel engines. Fuel lines would fracture, cylinders would either glow cherry red, or remain black, but the major problem was vibration in running at certain speeds. The trip south was a disaster because of engine problems and repairs. Trials were apparently reasonably ok, but still not reliable, and she returned to her home port. Here the engines were examined in depth and it would seem that there were built in design faults that could not be erradicated. The "V" angles were wrong and worked against each other at particular speed ranges. Here M Y Tarret vanishes from the records. I have written to the Archives in Newcastle, and they did provide me with the three photographs, but no other information is known to exist. I have the written record of the trials and a further report of the engine faults that I obtained from the Public Record Office at Kew, but no G/A drawings of the ship itself or any history of what happened to her after those Admiralty trials. Can anyone, anywhere, suggest any sources of information please. Yours "Aye" John Lambert ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "dengar" Subject: HMS Lance Hi Guys, I have an original set of builders plans for this destroyer, can anyone suggest where I could obtain more information. It appears very few photographs exist for this class of wartime ship and I can't even find a 1/96 scale model.
