CV "Arromanches" (ex-"HMS Colossus") as she appeared during Indochina operations circa '49 thru early '50's. Many thanks for your help Bob B ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "beloz" Subject: Value for money First time poster here. I have been watching the post on the list here with some interest. I like to build in 1/350 and this has limited me to the expensive Tamiya kita. Mind you for the quality I don't mind paying this. Have any of the members here bought and built any 1/350 kits from Trumpeter yet? If so what did you think of what you payed for? I have an interest in the russian 1/350 kits comming up soon and don't want to spend good money on a lemon. Their 1/350 line calls for a : #5606 USSR Admiral Kuznetsov and also I have watched others talk about the Kirov class also. This would be of great interest to me. Also I have just put my order in for the USS Arleigh Burke 1/350. Hope it turns out to be a good buy from Panda models. Bought at hobby link Japan. This is regarding a WWII era Sub-Chaser. << Yes, Ship Camouflage is an awesome web site: http://shipcamouflage.com/ship_call_letters.htm has a listing of call letters for the larger combatants (DD & larger) http://shipcamouflage.com/flags_and_pennets.htm has a listing of the flags. Apparently all USN ships, much like US civil aircraft, used "N" as the first letter of the combo. I would suspect that Coast Guard ships use "W" as the first letter while Merchant Marine used "T" - in keeping with their "branch" prefixes on the hull numbers. Does anybody know for sure? Since there isn't any info for the SC types, pick one and go with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Detlef Hartwig Subject: Re: AR 196 colours I went trough all my german books and the photos of the AR 196 on the cruisers & batleships shows only one colour, the RLM 71 (darkgreen) and no splinter camo with RLM 70 (blackgreen). Arados with land based units (Seeflieger Staffeln) had the splinter-camouflage! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: URUDOFSKY Subject: Re: Arado Ar 196 camouflage I think that the writer is right. Most Arados were greenish on top with light blue-grey bellies. http://www.artehistoria.com/batallas/fichas/222.htm Ulrich Rudofsky ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: HGYL Subject: Re: THE WORLD'S WORST WARSHIPS I acquired a copy of this book earlier this week. I wonder whether those on this list who were so quick to criticise (condemn ?) the book and its author when it was first published had actually read it? I have not yet read the book from cover to cover but it appears to be well researched, well reasoned and well argued. I think that anyone who wants to criticise the book, its author or the choice of subjects should first read the book and then offer a response as well researched, argued and reasoned as Antony Preston's theses. I am sure many will recall a similar furore which preceded the publication of a book written by one of our own list members. Yet when the book was actually read it was universally acclaimed. Another instance of a book being condemned without having been read was the 1985 publication "British Warship Designs Since 1906" by G.M.Stephen. Regards to all, Harold Lincoln ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Re: Support Columns >> I'm building a 'glass case' model of HMS Queen Elizabeth and need to know where I can lay my hands on some brass support columns - she is 5ft long so the columns need to be biggish. Does anyone know of a supplier in the UK? << Go to those "accent shops" that sell brass candle holders, usually made in India or some middle east country. They can be unscrewed into a base and several segments. Therefore you can chose a suitable length for your support. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Jtennier Subject: R A Burt Dwgs I was reviewing Burt & Trotter's "Battleships of the Grand Fleet" and noticed Burt did a drawing of HMS BELLEROPHON. Does anyone know if Burt ever had his drawings published commercially? Availability? John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Denis" Subject: Arado 196 Camo My refererences concur with Graham Boaks post.Segmented camo comprising RLM 72,73 & 65 was introduced in 1939 for all naval aircraft. While its impossible to be dogmatic that scheme would be the Factory one and would generally be adhered to by line units. The greens 72/73 are pretty close and with weathering would certainly appear to merge. Most b & w photos seem to be one upper colour and that and the qualities of the film used is the likely reason. However you weather the 196 (I am presuming here that you will weather?) I suggest the start point would be the official scheme - Don't forget that the swastika is on the rudder and that after 20th july 44 it probably wore a white spiral on the spinner. rgds denis james ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "William H. Shuey" Subject: Arado 196 Camouflage For what it is worth, the AR196 from the Prinz Eugen that is in the National Air and Space collection has a two tone upper surface camouflage. Bill Shuey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Paul & Renee Jacobs" Subject: Two Days in Paris >> I always forget that a sense of humour is neither universal nor a god given right. My apologies if you feel offended. << Oh yeah. I get it. That translation was your attempt at humor. Ha, Ha. No, John, I wasn't offended. I always forget that the ability to successfully deliver a joke is neither universal nor a God given right. Paul Jacobs ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Mistress Lorna Subject: Parts are clean .. now what? Okay, I have a nice clean HMS Furious here from LCP. As this is my first ship I'll be asking lots of questions from the SMML crew and the first one is how am I going to paint her? HMS Furious at the time I am building her wore a splinter scheme (no, don't tell me to go and build something simple to "get my hand in" - for the success of that approach you can ask Shane as soon as his ears stop ringing). This scheme was carried over parts of the ship's structure that are represented in the kit by resin and photoetch. Do I paint as much as I can and then assemble it or the other way around? What has worked for you guys?
