Regards, Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Bill Michaels Subject: Re: USCG Call signs The US Coast Guard also has call signs starting with "N". On everal ships, there were joke mottos based on the call sign. For example, on the Bark EAGLE, the call sign was NRCB, which obviously stood for "Never Refuse Cold Beer". One of the 327 Secretary class, I think it was USCGC BIBB, had NLPM. (No Liberty, Poor Morale.) You get the idea... >> I have no info to show one way or the other for Coast Guard. << Check out my list of USCG subjects in model kit form: home.earthlink.net\~billkaja\kitlist.htm Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Tony Mattson" Subject: Re: HMS BELLEROPHON Bellerophon {buh-lair'-uh-fahn} Greek Bellerophon provides a lesson in the proper relationship between a mortal hero and the gods. When he was young he honored the gods and won their favor but, then his pride got the better of him and led to his downfall. Late in life and in his arrogance he decided that he could ride Pegasus to Mount Olympus and visit the gods. Zeus quickly put an end to his trip by sending a gadfly to sting Pegasus and throw Bellerophon. He survived his fall but, was crippled. He spent the rest of his life wandering the earth. No man would help him because of his offense to the gods. He died alone with no one to record his fate. Stephen Allen Re mirage 1/400 kits I have several of these kits,of mirage and I got some P/E for their submarines from NKR MODELS made by mirage, I do not know if mirage do etch for the destroyers and escort vessels. I think I found NKR via sandle's site Yours Aye bert ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: EDWARD GRUNE Subject: Re: 1:400 scale photoetch for small ships? Steve Alen wrote >> I've recently picked up the Mirage 1/400 scale kit of ORP Blyskawica. It's a very nice kit, and now one of several smaller warships either available or forthcoming in this scale, including the four-piper series recently announced by Mirage. Is anybody out there in aftermarket land thinking of releasing an etched fret to cater for these small subjects? I know GMM has a set in this scale, but it is aimed towards larger subjects. A fret with depth charge rails, 'K' gun racks, etc, along the lines of the WEM set for 1:600 Airfix destroyers, would probably suit most of the available or foreshadowed subjects and complement exisiting sources for railings and WT doors - mind you a fret with APD/DMS alternatives for the coming Mirage four stackers would be very welcome. What do think? Is there a market? << Mirage makes a series of dedicated photoetch sets by Mirage for the their 1:400 scale ship and sub kits. These sets are very well done, rivaling anything done by the other "mainline" PE manufacturers. These sets have been reviewed here and on some of the other online sites. They fit the kit - exactly. They are highly recommended. I have not found any other site than Squadron Mail Order that carries these products. In fact the Mirage website links to Squadron in order to buy them. Here is the results of a search on the site that reveals what is in stock today: http://www.squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?ScaleList=400&TypeList=10&ManuList=MG&Key=&Submit=Go If this doesn't work, go to squadron.com and search for 1:400 scale, Ship Accessories, Mirage of Poland. These PE sets by Mirage seem to lag behind the release of the plastic kits by a good period of time. I hope that they will be able to step up the production of their PE with the expected release of the 4-pipers. Tom's Modelworks had on their projected release schedule a set of generic 1:400 scale items intended to fit the Heller U-Boat as well as the Mirage Type II and Type VII boats. I must admit I have not been back to Tom's site to check on the status of these items recently. I would be very happy if you could help me with the right colour for HMCS Snowberry and their corresponding numbers for Humbrol Enamel Paints. I know that WEM has got them collected in a kit, but since I already have several in the Humbrol range it seems unnecessary to build up a large stack of different jars. It is http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/navy/nrtc/ Among the TRAMANs listed are those for Signalman. Here is the link for First-class and Chief Signalman: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/navy/nrtc/14243.htm Chapter 5 is particularly beneficial as it addresses flag hoist procedures. Other chapters address message formation and other signalling methods. While the procedures contained in this TRAMAN are current, many of the flag and signalling procedures would still be correct for the WWII period. Also, at the end of this update, I have posted a few pictures of my model of HMS DIANA, from the caldercraft kit. I have just finished the coppering of this model, and have coloured each of the 2500 copper plates GREEN. The latest update is at: http://www.nutsnbits.com/nutsnbits_00006a.htm Thanks to Daniel Munoz for hosting the pages on his site. The site is full of model making interest: http://www.nutsnbits.com I'd appreciate any comments, good, bad or what not. This episode of the WWII took place in 7th April 1945, as most of you already know. Oh well, I just would like to remind you all of this fact. :) << Wasn't the Musashi Yamato's twin? Musashi was sunk in the Sibuyan Sea on October 24, 1944, after being hit by at least 17 bombs, 20 torpedoes, with a loss of 1,039 lives. The Yamato blew up after a mere 10 bombs and 12 torpedo hits, with a loss of about 2,000 lives. Why was the Musashi harder to kill than the Yamato? Its a great little comp, & is open to all styles of modelling, for those that deal in gamers figures, tanks oops mean land ships! & those flying things that seem to enjoy attacking ships!,lol There are 2 ship categories: Catgeory E which is beginners & then there is Cat G (vi) for the experts or people who enter in comps all the time.. or if you build ships as part of a diorama they have a beginner & advanced diorama section as well..You can enter as many kits as you like, but they must not have been entered in any previous comp before ..eg Melbourne , your own club championships etc. Last year i don think there was any beginners ships, though the experts was hotly contested with a 1/350th Bismark, a 1/350 Fletcher, my little 1/700 Shimikaze & there were 2 other 1/700 shps (a Kirov & the Lexington if my memory serves me correctly) Even if you cant enter anything, at least come & have a look, i'll be there as part of the APMA display & entering a few kits as well. I believe there will be displays from a Renaissance group & probably a few other groups as well to fill in the time, as well you can stroll around the grounds & look at all the tables of gamers in action (last year they had something like 30+ class rooms filled with gamers tables) Prizes: last year they had nifty little trolls holding paint brushes in gold, silver or bronze (I got a silver for a tank & a bronze for my ship) as well as other prizes from various companies, eg Mister Ply&wood (various stizes of timber boards & pieces, Dymocks (books), Matisse (paints) etc & adding their name to the comp this year is the Australian War Memorial (who will be giving away free guided tours as prizes i belive) & Cockington Green Gardens (who i believe will be giving away free entry as prizes). Hi All, With a delivery yesterday afternoon, and a lot of frantic labelling that evening, we now have all the Regia Marina Colourcoats ready to ship: RM01 Grigio Scuro (Dark Grey); RM02 Grigio Chiaro (Light Grey); RM03 Blu Scuro (Dark Blue); RM04 Azzurro (Light Blue); RM05 Verde Chiaro (Light Green); RM06 Giallo Verde (Light Yellow-Green); RM07 Bianco Sporco Opaco (Matt Foul White); RM08 Rosso (Red, for those forecastle stripes). The Rosso (Red) was a particularly difficult match for our paint company, but they hit it spot on; it's not your run-of-the-mill red! Looking at this range of colours, I'm struck by the fact that the Italian Navy not only had very pretty ships, their camouflage colours were striking, too. Pre-orders and standing dealer orders will be going out today. Get your orders in now for accurate paints for your Regia Marina subjects.
