Hi list Does anyone know for sure on how the Musashi sank for sure? I have read that she turned over before she down but I have all so heard that she when down on a somewhat even keel? Does anybody know for sure on this, could she be possibly sitting up right on the ocean floor and had anybody ever gone look for her? That is one big ship to sitting up right on the ocean floor. Thanks ;-> ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Trumpeter Arizona Hi I saw a 1/350 Arizona by Trumpeter red-tagged at the local Hobby People (or Hobby Lobby - I get confused) for under $17. Anybody wants it, I'll pick it up and ship it to you. You can pay me via Pay Pal. I don't want to make a profit - just helping out. Contact me (Ned@barnettmarcom.com) off-list and I'll take care of it. There's only one there on sale, so literally first come, first-served. Ned Barnett - Las Vegas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Richa5011 Subject: Potempkin & Aurora >> Has anyone seen the 1/400 scale Ogoniok of Russia kits of AURORA  and/or POTEMPKIN (available, far as I know, from WEM and Squadron)? My big question is, are they full hull kits? After that, any comments on accuracy, how they build, reference sources, etc. Love those pre-Dreadnoughts. << These kits are full hull. They are the old Heller molds that date back to the late-60's that were also released by Novo at one time. The detail level is not that impressive by modern standards, but the kits are quite buildable...they will, however take some serious cleanup as the detail is not that sharp and the kits I have suffer from a lot of flash...you get what you pay-for. I have seen a number of these kits that have been built-up very well. Naturally the addition of photoetch helps a lot. Nat Richards ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Re Pennants To Bradford Chaucer One way to judge the noticeability of the small pennants is try some on different scale models and see for yourself. On the intermediate-to-small scales a piece of white thread "treated" judiciously with red and with blue felt tip pens might be sufficient to suggest the pennants, and that's all you really need. Experiment with it. It's worth a try, just to shut up guys like me. What do you have to lose? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: URUDOFSKY Subject: Re: W vs. K Call Letters Although in the 1950-60s WCCO and KSTP TV/Radio in St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN, had their transmitters on the Eastside of the Mississippi, I think that all yacht radio stations on the Great Lakes, that I am familiar with, were "W" anyhow in 1950-1960. I am sure that after that, the rules broke loose and there is a gross mix-up right now. Ulrich Rudofsky ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "shaya novak" Subject: S. Mars ------------ A Burke I have seen the new Panda Kit at the NYC Toy Fair. Trust me it will be worth the wait. http://www.pandamodels.com/html/Arleigh%20Burke%20.html Shaya Novak Naval Base Hobbies www.totalnavy.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: THEGAVEL Subject: Re: Battleship Potemkin It's a full hull kit. Unfortunately, I built mine quite a while ago so my comments may not be totally accurate. As I recall it went together without any problems. I felt that the secondary armament was less detailed than desired, yet the complement of ship's boats was well done. In a way hard to make a fair comparison to other pre-dread kits as they are larger scale. The cost of kit on sale made it attractive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: andrew jones Subject: Re: Altmark Hi all There was just an sorty about it in the latest edition of WW2 or the other WW2, magazine..shows a couple of photos of the Altmark. Does not show the entire deck, but i'll scan it, unless someone has any better shots? regards Andrew Jones Oz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: andrew jones Subject: Re: German Barge I remember seeing a kit very similar to this..Leva i think in 1/72 As for the photo... yes it could be a fire fighting mount...but i think it would be more probably a MG or 20mm mounts..who knows maybe there covered with something & the shields were left off? who knows... I would just stick on either a set of Mg's or most likely a 20mm, that way if you put fire hoses on the stands imagine the comments! Possible reasons there could be fire mounts? maybe the barge is regularly used to fight fires after Russian bombing attacks???? if its a base or something..who knows.. regards Andrew Jones Oz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Lawman555 Subject: Re: Hull lettering Victor and Franklyn have both been extremely helpful and informative with their info on the hull lettering and the ships flags, pennants, etc. My thanks to you both.... Now, perhaps this is a no brainer, perhaps not???? Does it matter which side of the hull numbers that the shadow, or background goes? What also is the difference between using grey or white lettering and black lettering? Thanks ahead of time to you all. Jim Myers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Ralf Gerhardt" Subject: resurrection Hi all, I am a big fan of the IJN and have already some Japanese ship and airplane models. However, I´m wondering why never someone came on the idea to "copy" such a great ship as for example the YAMATO in the original (thus 1:1)??? Or were there ever any plans for such a project, may be on any other warship? Okay - sure that would be an incredible expansive matter, but RMS Titanic is to rise from death too... Perhaps my question sounds some ludicrous, but it would really interest me much... Best wishes, Ralf ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "David T. Okamura" Subject: Re: Japanese vs US AA in WW2 "Norman Samish" wrote: >> Since the Musashi didn't blow up, its wreck, if accessible, should be in better shape than that of the Yamato. I assume the wreck is inaccessible or undiscovered - is that correct? << I remember reading a Musashi survivor's story in an old issue of Sea Classics magazine. While I also thought the Musashi sank on an even keel and should be intact, his recollection surprised me. According to the survivor, the Musashi capsized just prior to sinking (meaning she could be upside-down on the bottom and her turrets dislodged), and he was sucked underwater by the resulting vortex. However, the survivor was then hurled upward by an immense eruption, which was probably the magazines exploding underwater. He further described that the floating survivors waited for hours before their rescue simply because observers on the other Japanese ships couldn't believe anyone would have lived through the blast. I don't know of any expedition to find the Musashi, but if this account is accurate the wreck might not be in any better condition than Yamato. David T. Okamura ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Jesse Sublett Subject: Cruiser AURORA and battleship POTEMKIN I picked up a Potemkin a couple of years ago at a model show, cheap, and it is full hull but the bad news is that it does not build well at all. The hull & other major sections did not fit properly together. Some ingenious craftsmen out there may be more capable of getting these things together, or perhaps mine was just molded poorly but I finally gave up and stuck it in the closet. I can't vouch for the accuracy since I don't have detailed plans on this particular warship. Cheers, Jesse check out new home page www.overbooked.org/Sublett.html http://www.overbooked.org/jesse_sublett/index.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Brooks Rowlett Subject: YAMATO Can someone provide a book or website reference for the April 1945 torpedo attacks on the YAMATO being concentrated on only one side? I have been reading naval history for 30+ years and I have only encountered this statement within the last 6 months or so. Brooks A. Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Vladimir Yakubov" Subject: Re: Cruiser AURORA and battleship POTEMKIN They are both full hull kits. I have them both, but I haven't actually built them. The quality is pretty bad since the molds are from the 1970s and have deteriorated pretty badly. As to the references, I have some, so email me off list at yak_v@hotmail.com. I haven't taken a look at them as far as dimentions go, but most of the small details are pretty crappy and a lot of work will have to make it into a decent kit. Vladimir ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "David Griffith" Subject: Re: Kingfisher colours Dear All, I wonder if anyone can guide me as to the correct colour scheme for Kingfisher spotter planes carried aboard US battleships in the Atlantic in 1944. I am doing Samek's USS Texas in the dazzle scheme she wore for a few months while travelling from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Steve Wiper's book shows her carrying two Kingfishers while wearing this scheme and they appear to be in one of the schemes with three colours. However, would it be the Atlantic anti-submarine scheme of two greys over white, or the more familiar two blues over white? The same book also has a photo of a Kingfisher being launched in the Pacific in 1945. This is very clearly in a three-colour scheme, so it has not been repainted since coming from the Atlantic. If it had been, it would presumably have been done in the overall sea blue scheme that was current at that time. Leeward Publications shows a couple of diagrams with the blue and white scheme, but I am aware of a lot of inaccuracies in this book, so I'm not inclined to take it as gospel without corroboration. Can anyone tell me if the grey and white scheme was only applied to aircraft operating off carriers, or whether it was also appropriate for battleships' spotter planes? Thanking you in anticipation. AND WHO WOULD LIKE TO VISIT THE HAIDA ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON FOR A SHORT DOCKSIDE LOOK AT HER WHILE SHE IS BEING REFITTED? I don't know if I can arrange this, but it's about a 1/2 hour drive from Buffalo, across the border, I need to know who would like to attempt this by next week. Rides will be provided for beer money. ; ) I expect answers from everybody on the list below, or the keelhauling will be ugly. As of today, the list of attendees looks like this: James Kloek Darren Scannell Rick Biesik Russ Smith John Rule (I believe he's going to try and run the border, but will have to wait and see) Jeff Hughes (a definate maybe) Bradford Chaucer Art Herrick David Gregory David Sepos Jeff Fenton (maybe not?) I hope that this isn't too much off topic, but I am looking to trade decals with those of you who also build 1/72 wingy things. I am trying to build a collection of aircraft from the USS Nimitz in the timeframe 1975-1986, i.e. when CVW-8 was embarked. I have quite a few done already, but I need a few more. I need only the decals peculiar to the Nimitz options, so I don't need complete sheets. In particular, I need the VA-35 KA-6D from the Fujimi kit, (I have the Italeri kit); the low-vis VA-35 bit from the Superscale/Microscale sheet (72-535): low-vis VF-84 F-14 , Nimitz, not Roosevelt, (again Superscale 72-558 I think); the F-4J VF-74 from Aeromaster 72-179 (not CAM); Superscale 72-208 S-3A Viking from VS-24 only; the Airfix RA-5C Vigilante decals, (I've invested in an airbrush since I built this, so would like to strip it & start again) SH-3H from HS-9 (does this exist in 1/72????) RF-8G, VFP-63 (ditto?????) If anyone is aware of any other sources for the above a/c, please let me know, these are all I'm aware of. Have a good collection to trade, or will pay reasonable amounts, please email direct if you can help. When I retire or win the lottery I'll start on the 1/72 Nimitz hull. (Now it's on topic!)
