Of course, this is based solely on the rumor I have heard that she'll go down in a SinkEx, not scuttled for an artificial reef. Until I hear it from the Navy, its a rumor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: AAA Hobby Supply Subject: Re: Ex-USSR Warships' Deck Color >> Can anyone suggest a color mix for the orange-brown decks of Ex-USSR Warships? If possible, Tamiya color mix would be most helpful. << I never could get a good match from Tamiya, but in PoillyScale paints you can use this, matched to an "authentic" paint chip a fellow Russky-nut had, 4 parts Italian Camo. Brown and 1 part RLM23 Red. It isn't Tamiya, but it is acrylic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Kevin Woodruff Subject: Great Eastern The Great Eastern had a draft of 30.1 feet (9.2 m) Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Great Eastern We seem to have started quite a thread with this ship but isn't it a nice change to see some merchant ship trivia creeping onto the list? The Great Eastern did not, of course, hit bottom at Montauk Point on August 28th, 1862, as was at first believed, but struck a pinnacle of rock which was later named the Great Eastern Rock. Official charts at that time showed the shallowest depth in that area as 36 ft. and with the GE drawing 30ft it was considered quite safe to navigate the area. The pinnacle was, however, only some 27ft beneath the surface and it was just extreme bad luck that the GE should hit it. The above info is from Dugan "The Great Iron Ship", an excellent book with one unfortunate error at the very end where he claims the first ship to exceed the GE in tonnage was the Lusitania launched in 1906. That statistic had already been reached in 1901 with the White Star Line Celtic, 20,904 gross registered tons as compared to GE's 18,915 tons. I spoke to Skytrex earlier this week and they tell me that they now have photographs of some of the finished items and are preparing instructions for the kits. They hope to have some of them available in about 10 days time but the WWI destroyers will not be available for a few weeks. Regards Les Brown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Clary Townsend" Subject: HMCS Huron (1944) I need some help in identifying the colours for both HMCS Huron/Haida during the Channel sweeps in 1944. Alan Raven's Vol. # 3, gives the colours for Athabascan as B55 and white, this actually for 1943, after re-fit. However, pictures of both Huron and Haida show a three colour scheme. Peter Hodges, on the other hand, in his book "The Tribal Class Destroyers", shows a colour scheme (no numbers) but correct pattern of, WA Blue, White, and what maybe G45. This would make an attractive colour scheme, but is it correct?? Any help in determining the colours would be greatly appreciated. Clary Townsend ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Art Herrick" Subject: Re: Van Ryper models On April 24th, Jim Bloom posted the message below: >> I have seen models by Van Ryper's workshop on Martha's Vineyard going for $500-$1000+ on e-bay lately. I wonder about the appeal of these models, which seem kind of rudimentary. I realize they were intended as "travel souvenirs" and were thus supposed to be economical, easily portable and storeable. IMHO, they seem rather rudimentary and clunky. They probably replicate the view from the deck of a passing ship, or from shore, at maybe a mile or so from the vessel. IIRC Van Ryper produced some of the warship recognition ID models for the Navy in WWII and maybe it's this tradition that he represents. However, there is hardly any deck detail, booms, masts and davits are represented by straight wire, dowels or nails and the decks are flush. I suppose the appeal is similar to the "folk art" tin warships by Tucher and similar firms. I was wondering whether any modeler had some insights on the demand for the Van Rypers. << For more information on Van Ryper models, do a Google Web Site Search for: http://www.google.com/ Then do a search entry: "Van Ryper" + ship models Art Herrick Westmoreland, New Hampshire USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Randy Ward Subject: Re: Sub Models and Big E >> Also When was the "Hat" removed from Big E and replaced by a conventional antenna arrangement. << Oli, according to my notes, the "beehive" on the island was replaced during the major rebuild from 1990 to 1994. 'Any carrier experts out there? 8-) Randy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Ricardo Astorga" Subject: Typhoon class SSBN names Hi Olafur If you still are looking for Typhoon class SSBN names, you should try the Index of Russian Naval Ship Names page at http://www.webcom.com/~amraam/shipind.html. This page contains information about Russian Ships names, status, etc. There are another page http://submarine.id.ru/thumbs/941/index.shtml where you will find a Typhoon class SSBN photo gallery; only inconvenient is in russian language. I hope you will find this information useful for your project ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Paul & Renee Jacobs" Subject: Van Rypers Actually Van Rypers were not "travel souvenirs." VR built models in a variety of scales and qualities. Some models, especially in smaller scales were built as relatively simple models for general sales in his shop. But VR also built models on commission, for the Navy, museums, companies, and private collectors. The size and detail of these models varied depending upon the requirements and pocket book of the buyer. He could do very high quality work when he was paid to do so. The more rudimentary models were produced in larger quantity for sales to the general public, most of whom lacked the wherewithal to pay high prices. VR's are prized just like any 60 or 70 year old hand made product might be. They were never mass produced like machine made items, and have for many collectors a pleasing naivete about them.
