H. Mispelkamp" Subject: Tamiya 1/400 scale re-release email campaign! Guys: I just this answer from Tamiya in regards to their old 1/400 IJN cruisers: >> Thank you for your e-mail. Unfortunately, we don't have any stock left and we don't have plan to re-release such models at this time. We will take your suggestion into consideration for our future release plans and forward this message to our development section. Thank you again and we hope you will enjoy our products continuously. Pradignac Marc International Division Tamiya, Inc. WINDOW@tamiya-inc.co.jp << So if any of you out there want to see Tamiya re-release any of their 6 1/400 IJN cruisers (Kumano, Suzaya, Maya, Myoko, Haguro, Chokai) from the 60's - let them know that I am not alone in wanting them! Long live 1/400: the truely divine International scale for WWII ships! Regards Peter M ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: joe.sus Subject: HMS Courageous sonar Now that the SSN HMS Courageous is on public display, there are quite a few photos available. One thing that I noticed is that the forehead sonar window seems more bulged than in older photos. Was this changed during a refit, or am I seeing things? Joe Suszynski ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Robert Mosher" Subject: Re: "The Ship" >> For Australians - on Tuesday 8pm on ABC in Sydney (check your guides to make sure it's on where you are) a program called "The Ship" about the HMS Endeavour replica. From what I can see in the trailer, it's about the health of the volunteers who sail the ship, with lots of footage of the ship at sea. MUST SEE! << I heartily endorse Mike Kear's recommendation. We in the States saw "The Ship" on cable television last year - brilliant combination of 1900 House and One Year Before the Mast, and with beautiful scenery including especially the ship itself. Robert A. Mosher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: PaulShip37 Subject: sources of plans for ships Not long ago there was a discussion about sources and availability of plans of ships suitable for use in modeling. It occurred to me that I, myself, no longer know the best places to find ship plans. At one time, Abe Taubman's plans service was the best there was.I met Abe at an RC show in the 80's and had a nice talk with him then. I have bought plans from him, but not for years. It was a bit of a shock to visit his web site and realize that Abe is now 90 years old, and his plans service is run by volunteers among his friends. In that context, its not surprising that the selection of plans is a shadow of its former glory. Things change, what is here today may be gone tomorrow without notice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Ives100 Subject: Re: Typhoon submarine >> On my quest I found some interesting pictures of the propellers and rudders of a Typhoon in try-dock. This one has the two propellers in round casings, horizontal rudders behind the propellers and the lower rudder much wider then the upper one. This is very different from the dragon model. Is this a modified Typhoon? << No. The stern on the DML (Dragon) model was a guess back in the ealry 90's, and they got it wrong. There is no central "beaver tail" sternplane. There are two sternplanes abaft the propeller. The propellers are shrouded, presumably because the Typhoon class was design to surface through the polar ice to launch missiles. The Typhoon class is actually called Akula class by the Russians- confusing, as one of the late model Russian attack SSNs was designated by NATO as Akula. I have a rather poor set of 1994 plans that match the Typhoon stern as seen in the drydock photo (very impressive picture!!) Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Michael Aono" Subject: Re: wind jammer plan service >> Wind Jamer arts plans and service up in Washingtion state. VERY GOOD PLAN SERVICE!! I have use them many times and have been treated good cant complan about any thing, Worth the time to get intouch with them if you looking for plans good drawings and prices, << Don, Does Wind Jammer Plan Service have a web site? Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Michael Aono" Subject: Re: Use of an 18" gun for anti-aircraft >> Dulin and Garzke, p.70: (after a discussion of a request to use "sanshikidan" shells as they call them) "Musashi opened fire on her attackers with a full nine-gun 460-mm salvo. After this first salvo, Turret 1 was out of action, because one of its guns had a projectile jammed in one of the barrels. A second salvo of six 460-mm shells was fired. Neither salvo deterred the American aircraft [...]" Apparently Yamato used them in her last battle, against two PBMs and against the TBMs, but with no apparent effect. BTW, Dulin and Garzke concur that Musashi was torpedoed on both sides, and that the US tried to hit Yamato on one side only to sink her more quickly. << I read in either "Building the Battleship Musashi" or "Requiem for a Battleship Yamato" that one of the ships successfully used her 18" guns and down ten or twenty aircraft just prior to the Leyte Gulf engagement. Has someone confirmed from the U.S. side if this was grossly exaggerated? Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Coleman, Denis PO" Subject: Titanic Hi I was wondering what colour to use to paint my titanic model, the kit lists the British standard colour code but I am unable to convert these over to the current range of available colours from today's suppliers. Thanks Denis ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Peter Crandall" Subject: Choppers I have recently gotten into scratchbuilding and am looking for a chopper to cut lengths of Evergreen strips. Does anyone know where I could buy one of these? Thanks for the help.
