Same goes for red and white. Where on earth did you get a model of Aegir? Icelanidc Coastguard has three active ships. Aegir and Tyr which are sister ships and Thor which is much older. Olafur ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Mackenzie Gregor Subject: HMAS Canberra Cap Tally Hello, Can anyone please point me to where I might be able to purchase an HMAS Canberra cap tally? Hope it helps, Frank Stile >> The Arizona was painted in 5-L Light Gray on all vertical surfaces. Main deck and 02 level (boat deck) where Teak colored. Above that all horizontal surfaces were Deck Blue. This was the scheme carried till about November 1941. Measure 14 was used after November 1941and is what you see at the time of Pearl Harbor . Vertical surfaces on the hull and super structure were Ocean Gray. Masts, yards, and towers above the the superstructure were painted Haze Gray. All horizontal surfaces were Deck Blue. Color chips are available from Snyder and Short Enterprises, 9175 Kiefer Blvd. #224, Scramento, Ca.95826. E Order U.S. Navy World War II Ship Colors These colors are available in paint from Pacific Front Hobbies and White Ensign Models. I'm going to build two 1:700 scale Royal Australian Navy vessels from the Skywave (Pit-Road) kits. In case you haven't seen these, they are beautiful little kits with crisp moldings and good detail. The two ships in question are the HMAS Perth (Charles F Adams Class DDG) and HMAS Adelaide (Oliver Hazard Perry Class FFG). I managed to obtain the Flagship PE from Shane & Lorna. I've been studying pictures of Australian ships and managed to get a closer look at a couple of patrol boats whilst I was in Cairns last week. The RAN grey appears to have a slight greenish hue, certainly different from the USN haze grey. Does anybody know where I can lay my hands on this paint colour? Thanks Steve Hi Steve, Good choice with those two kits. I'll be starting mine along with HMAS Vampire (hush JR or I'll hide the Single Malt) in about 2-3 weeks (see below in the Trader Section). A good start for modelling the RAN FFGs can be found in the APMA Magazine. Lindsay Charman did an excellent series called "A Tale of Four Frigates" (back when we only had four) & I'll be using them for my build. PhoneFax: (541) 474-3226 Usual disclaimer: I have no connection with Waldron, but I used disks made from it in several hundred locations on a destroyer model I built some time ago and would hate to do without the set. I believe these sets are also available through Roll Models at: http://www.rollmodels.com Bob Steinbrunn Minneapolis Nautical Research Guild ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Norbert Onaitis" Subject: Auto Etch" Photoetch System >> I'm in the area, if you have an address, I could check it out for you. << To Jon & Keith, I'd also appreciate any information...I've been working on photoetching for a few months now. The negatives are no problem-there's a guy here in Buffalo, NY who can create negaatives (or positives) from CorelDraw files. The problem is in the sensitizing, exposing and etching (with Ferric Chloride) steps that follow. If here's an easier way, I like to hear about it. Right now I'm persuing a suystem that makes use of a dry-film laminator, UV exposure, air agitated PVC tanks for developing and etching. If you'd like, I can pass along to you the data I've collected so far. Nick Onaitis P.S. It's about 35-40 pages long as a MS Word file right now. Lotsa information, tho. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Michael Aono" Subject: Re: Link for Ship Plans >> The last I checked there was a very comprehensive sources list for ship plans on the NRG web site. I initiated it at least ten years ago, and I believe that the current web master, Vince McCullough has been keeping it updated. www.Naut-Res-Guild.org Go to sources for model builders. << I just checked out the NRG site and I did not find anything on ship plans. After rereading this post, I will check again and look for a link for "source." As far as compiling a list of website providers of ship plans, I have been doing something like that on a Yahoo Group I created. I set up the links because I would always find a source for particular classes of ships I wanted to build but I was unable to remember or reproduce the URL when I needed it later. I obtained a number of them from past SMML posts and another discussion board called J-Aircraft. I would appreciate obtaining more sites I can include in this link. In attendance besides Darren and me were Ken Gray, Charlie Parker, Bradford Chaucer, Dave Sepos, Bruce Buchner, Ted Paris, Jon Warnecke, John Rule, and James Corley. Friday afternoon we hung out at Noreastcon, mainly at the Iron Shipwright tables, shopped at vendors, entered models in the contest and generally shot the bull. Later we had dinner togetherand some of the group sought entertainment on the Canadian side of the border. Saturday morning we had a seminar on ship building techniques (yes, Darren did his famous glue tip demo again). Saturday afternoon we visited the 1:1 scale ships at the Naval Park. We had a guided tour through the Sullivans and Little Rock, and some of the group went through the Croaker on their own. The ships were very interesting (the missle handling room on the Little Rock was amazing), although not up to contest standards. The rails were not straight, the rigging wasn't right, the anchor chain had the wrong size links, and the teak decks on the Little Rock were the wrong color. Saturday night was the contest banquet, and the final event involved John Rule, Charlie Parker, Brad Chaucer, me, and a bottle of scotch. Nobody got hurt. Noreastcon was great too. Over 650 models were entered, and most were of very high quality. The ship categories were amazing, those of the group who had been at Virginia Beach for the nationals said that in terms of number and quality, this contest was equal if not better. I think a good time was had by all.
