Because the submarine used in the film was an Spanish submarine (type U-VIIC) called G-7, ex ex U-573, and when the film was made my father was member of the crew and he is in the film as "extra", in some scenes. Next month is his birthday and I want to give him the video as a present. Does any body know where I can get it?, I prefer internet sites where I can buy it. Many thanks Miguel Costa Palma de Mallorca Balearic Islands SPAIN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: U.S.S. CONSTITUTION I recently came across an original copy of a book which should be of great interest to people who are aficionados of U.S.S. CONSTITUTION, more affectionately know as "Old Ironsides". The title is "A Cruise on the Constitution" by Benjamin Stevens, printed in 1904. The author was an officer serving on that cruise which began in April of 1844 and went through September of 1846, and "showed the flag" on a world cruise. One little known piece of information gleaned from this little gem of a book is the fact that while in the Indian Ocean in 1884 CONSTITUTION's hull was painted an off-white ("lead color" as described by Stevens), apparently to test a new theory that lighter hues could be effective in offsetting the effects of a tropical sun. This seems to be another of Benjamin Franklin's original ideas. The gun port stripe was painted bright red, and the sobriquet "Old Ironsides" appeared on the bows "in fancy colors". I believe the U.S.S. Constitution Museum in Boston has a very rare painting showing this paint scheme. It is interesting to note that the "lead color" eventually developed into the basic gray used for naval vessels world-wide For most of the 2 1/2 year cruise the ship's roster consisted of 457 men, of which 252 were known to be Americans, 195 non-Americans, and 10 of questionable origin. Of the 195 known non-Americans, 175 were foreign enlisted men. Apparently all 32 of the officers were American, as were 20 of the Marines, and another 20 Marines were foreigners. The national origin of the regular crew of 375 enlisted men is detailed as: USA 200 Denmark 6 Portugal 2 England 35 France 6 Prussia 2 Ireland 34 China 5 Australia 1 Germany 16 Wales 5 Bremen 1 Sweden 14 Hamburg 4 Mahonese (?) 1 Scotland 12 Russia 4 Peru 1 Holland 11 Norway 3 Switzerland 1 Canada 8 Italy 2 West Indies 1 Any mathematical inconsistencies may be attributed to less-than-precise original records, including those of the 10 men of questionable nationality (such as Mahonese, etc.). The status of the Marines is not clear as to whether or not they were technically considered as ship's crew. The text is written in a clear narrative style, easy to read and enjoy, and gives the reader a detailed insight to an interesting era in the history of The Ship. It is a rather small book, only 67 pages long, but a real treasure. Lots of great ship models, many more than I can remember at any recent IPMS regional function. Loved the field trip and the refreshments. Looking forward to doing it again. I'm working on something, but it's too early to talk about it. Stay tuned. Many thanks also to all the BuffCon boys for a great show and venue.
