I have never had the opportunity to examine plans by Taubman but I know a few people who have ordered plans from his site. To my surprise, they received Wiswesser plans. If you plan on ordering from Taubman, be sure to ask who they are by. It has been my experience that a majority of ship plans will have a profile, top and hull stations view. Sometimes you will get the deck views and a bow view. What I found frustrating when I started scratch building is no two plans by different drafters for the same class of ship are alike. From afar they look the same but if you examine them closely, you will find peculiarities that set them apart. As far as detail goes, ship plans are only good for the general layout such as the hull and major sections of the superstructure. You will need to reference photos or other resources if you are looking for more detail or historical accuracy. Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: M Brown Subject: Re: Paul Webb Plans Webb's used to be at Williamstown and are long gone. Some of his plans were actually John Roberts plans. Try ABE for them. Hyland's in Melbourne has a small stock of his plans. Michael Brown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Bob Evans" Subject: Re: Shell Welder photos In response to Jim Blooms request for information on "Shell Welder".(article 3) www.images-of-ships.net has a photo of Shell Welder and a few almost sister ships which should prove useful. I am attempting to gather information for a similar project of my own and would be quite happy to share any information I might get with Jim. Rgds Bob Evans ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: CONSTITUTION's World Tour To: Joe Poutre Subject: Date correction for CONSTITUTION's cruise. Aye, ye are correct, Laddie. The correct date is 1844, not 1884. In the process of verification I came across some minor inconsistencies in terminology and dates in some reference books, and will follow up on them and let you know what else I find. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Eagle Boats During World War One Henry Ford contracted to build a fleet of 200 foot long 615 ton ships for the U.S. Navy, using techniques derived from his famous Model T assembly line. He thus may be thought of as a forerunner of Henry Kaiser. The Ford Motor Company built 60 patrol vessels, called Eagle Boats, which were commissioned beginning in July of 1918. The war ended on November 11, 1918, and none of them ever saw combat action. They had slab sided bows and other features which made them easier (thus faster) to build than "normal" conventional ships with their multi compound curved hulls. But the Eagle Boats were considered by most Navy men as the most unsightly and ill-shaped ships the Navy ever had, even to this day. Few photographs remain, as people didn't want to waste film on these ugly ducklings. My father stayed in the Navy after the war, and I recall his fervent wish to not be assigned to an Eagle Boat. He wasn't. Have any SMML people, with a propensity for being an infracaninophile, ever made a model of an Eagle Boat (or ever seen one, real or modeled)? My guess is that such a model, no matter how well made, would require considerable research, and would still look like the work of a rank amateur. Comments? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: URUDOFSKY Subject: Re: Scapa Flow Günther Prien film Both the German and US eBays have this tape listed for $5-10. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Starline / Fleetline Subject: Re: Shell Welder photos >> I am going to tackle the Shell Welder coastal tanker using the Frog kit with the Academy photo etch set. The problem is that the box art is not much of a guide to painting or even deck detailing for that matter. Does anyone know where I might find some photos of the ship? Preferably on the internet. I am unable to find any references to the actual ship. I know she was built in 1955 at Cleland's shipyard, but photos seem to be scarce. << Hi Jim, if unlike the last persom who asked you say thank you, I can e-mail you an old article from MODEL BOATS in 1956 IIRC. She had just been launched, the article though brief and in B&W gives a basic written description of her livery. Drop me a line with your e-mail address & I'll send it to you. Pipe has too thick of a wall and strip styrene is difficult to create a perfect circle especially with an egress. Thanks in advance ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: NeustadtDonau Subject: Ship Plans Greetings: I have been looking for plans for USN motor gunboats converted from subchasers. Most noteably PGM 1-8, converted from 110-foot subchasers and PGM 9-32, converted from the 173-foot PCs. I've checked most of the major plans sites and came up with nothing. I have some illustration in Friedman's US Small Combatants and a few photos. I have a spare hull of each type and would like to make the conversions. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, John Collins Franklin, Tennessee, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Steven P. These were mainly of Oz warships but there were also some of RN ships. Does anyone know if the company still exists and if so, their contact co-ordinates? << Hi Harold, glad you asked, having spent considerable time tracking Mr Webb down I went to see him just two days ago to arrange to distribute his drawings. Well at least those he still has available. He has promised to have an updated list within the next two weeks and we are proud to announce FLEETLINE will be carrying them. We will carry in stock all his RAN related plansets & drawings, the various RN & USN drawing will be available to order (should take a week). His excellent drawings have not been available for about 15 years on a commercial basis. I'm happy to say he has already started on a few new drawings and we will keep SMML advised as they come on line. We will make an announcement and add an availability list to our web-site as soon as we have them.
