I welcome both as I have failed to find anything on the Shell Welder. The Merchant Ships annuals for 1955 through 1957 don't list them as they only covered ships of 1,000 BRT upwards. Smaller ships of interest only began with the 1958 volume. I found photos of some later coastal tankers operated for Shell/BP which I thought would have been near-sisters, but which had enough differences as to render them useless for my purposes. I thank both of you in advance for any help and for your quick replies. Thanks for any help you can give. My guess is that such a model, no matter how well made, would require considerable research, and would still look like the work of a rank amateur. << A couple of months back I pulled some microfilmed plans of these boats from the Archives in College Park, MD. IIRC, there are 9 reels of plans for these boats in the Archives. You're right - they were not sleek looking swifts of the sea. They look more like a Model T than a Corvette. There is a pronounced kink in the hull that gives the ship hump-backed appearance. I made copies of pertinant sheets of the plans. I've resized them and have been working on a 1:350 scale model which I hope will be a master for a resin kit. I've talked with Jon at Iron Shipwright and he has expressed interest in the possibility. Right now the hull, upper decks, and deck house structures have been made. I'm getting set to white glue the parts together and send it off to Jon for an opinion as to its castability. The space between the outer wave breaker and the deckhouse bulkhead is a bit over 1/8 inch wide. I'm concerned that this area of the mold may be subject to breaking out - reducing the life of the mold. Once I get his opinions back -- I'll detail the bulkheads and draw up the brass. The centerpiece of the fret will be the raised compass platform at midships. It will also need raised canopy support railings. Infracaninophile? A low-down dog lover -- perhaps. We have a mangy one that is half terrier, half beagle, half traveling man ... Ed Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: EDWARD GRUNE Subject: Gun Tubs Here's how I've made circular gun tubs. Obtain a piece of pipe who's outside diameter is the diameter of the tub you need. Don't worry about pipe's wall thickness. The pipe can be PVC, copper, galvanized, whatever is handy and the right size. You can use a wooden dowel too. Cut a strip of Evergreen the height of the tub walls. Wrap the Evergreen around the pipe. You can either cut the Evergreen to a butt-joint or spiral it around the pipe. Tape the Evergreen to the pipe. Use masking tape or duct tape. Cellophane tape is no good. On the kitchen stove -- heat a pot of water to a rolling boil. Dip the pipe/styrene into the boiling water for just a moment. Don't leave it in long or the styrene will warp. The styrene will warp long before the PVC pipe softens and deforms. Pull the pipe out and cool it by running it under cold water. Untape the styrene and you should have a cylinder. Trim out you openings and install. Ed Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Robert Lockie Subject: Creating gun tubs (and any other cicular structures) In the toy tank world, in which I spend most of my existence, we often have a need to produce this sort of thing, for mudguards and the like. The easiest way I find is to form them by wrapping strip round a former of the appropriate diameter. You can either use annealed brass or styrene, but if you use the latter, then tape it to the former (dowel or whatever) with some suitably water-resistant tape and dunk it in boiling water for a few seconds before allowing it to cool and removing it from the former. Then trim to size and cement in place. Obviously nothing to stop you from making a stack at once, so you have a few spares. Best Regards Detlef ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: gun tubs >> O.k. then, what is the best way to make round gun tubs in 1/196th and larger scales. Pipe has too thick of a wall and strip styrene is difficult to create a perfect circle especially with an egress. << Brass shim stock of the proper thickness, wrapped around an appropriately sized dowel. You can then solder it to a disk for the base. This should be quite strong and the brass should retain it's shape. You might need to use an undersized dowel to compensate for spring back. Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Glenn and Kelly Neklason" Subject: USS Kidd (DD-993) Hi All, I've a friend who served on the USS Kidd (DD-993) and he's anxious to get the new 1/350 kit. Where can I direct him to get one? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Thanks, Glenn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Art Herrick" Subject: Re: Taubman Plans On May 9th Michael Aono wrote: >> Which RN ship are you interested in? I have never had the opportunity to examine plans by Taubman but I know a few people who have ordered plans from his site. To my surprise, they received Wiswesser plans. If you plan on ordering from Taubman, be sure to ask who they are by. << I have a 1998 Taubman Plans Service catalog in front of me, and on the inside cover there is a Catalog Index which indicates that Wiswesser plans are listed as one group of drawings, starting on page 80, and for this section Abe uses the Wiswesser drawing numbers as his catalog drawing numbers. On page "a" Abe Taubman explains, and gives the "Key Code" that identifies the draftsman, or ship model kit company, who produced a particular drawing in his catalog, except for special sections like that for the Wiswesser drawings.. This is a two or three capital letter code, which appears in the catalog ordering number for each drawing. As an example: my own plans for the WILLIAM UNDERWOOD, a 70ft Maine sardine carrier have the catalog number TPSAH-028. The "TPS" means that I supplied Abe with a master drawing he uses to print copies as needed, and the "AH" identifies me [Art Herrick] as the drawing's draftsman. The Taubman Plans Service has an advertisement in the latest Seaways'/Ships in Scale magazine, and Abe can only be reached at 201 435-5205, as he does not use e-mail.. Abe has a Web Site Catalog, but it does not contain the "Draftsman Key Code" that I refer to above. For this you need the "paper catalog", which there is no mention of on Abe's Web Site [See his advertisement in S/SIS magazine or telephone Abe] : http://taubmansonline.com/cgi-bin/store/shop.cgi Art Herrick Westmoreland, New Hampshire USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: graham Subject: Re: Australian Ship Drawings >> Back in the early 1970s an Australian company called P.A.Webb produced a number of very good ship drawings. These were mainly of Oz warships but there were also some of RN ships. Does anyone know if the company still exists and if so, their contact co-ordinates? << Webb warships was run by a Paul Webb who was a draftsman working at the Williamtown Naval Dockyard (a god awful place where I seem to spent too many of my younger years killing brain cells at the 20 or so pubs that Williamstown had then) he produced a series of about 80 odd A3 size ship drawings mainly Australian UK and American with some German ships plus larger plans I have a catalogue from 1980-81 which has a large number of additional items but unfortunate they seem to have faded from view about 1983 with a model shop that he started there The drawing where very good and in those dark ages of information where a great resources I have all of the A3 size drawings he produced ( I think) plus some of the larger plans Graham Murdoch Perth WA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Shane Subject: Re: Tamiya 1/350 USS Fletcher instructions Hi all, Thank you to everyone who sent in or offered to send in copies of the instructions.
