I still don't understand how the Navy ever approved of the design, admirals having a reputation for spurning unconventional concepts. Perhaps the projected relatively low cost, short building time, and Ford's reputation as a shaker and a mover influenced BuShips. There is one story that although early on Henry Ford was against America getting involved in W W 1, and sponsored a fiasco of a Peace Mission to Europe, he did support the American effort once we were in it. He stated that he would return to the Government any profits made from the sale of the Eagle Boats. But there seems to be no record of such a rebate ever having been made, or if Henry broke even or actually lost money. The term "Cinderella" had been assigned to the 110 Ft. Submarine Chaser, which turned out to be the Belle of the Ball in W W 1 ASW. The hapless Eagle Boats seem to have lacked redeeming virtues. "Infra" in this sense means "under", thus you, sir, are a champion of the underdog, which certainly does describe these Sorry Sisters of the Sea. Bless you. Hi list, I do not know if anybody knows or had heard but during May the 5 thru the 8 Americas new Theodore Roosevelt class carrier was doing her builder trains! The might USS RONALD REAGAN CV 76 is planned for a July 12 or 14 commissioning! Just to let everybody know! Thanks ;-) http://www.reagan.navy.mil/main.htm http://www.nns.com/news/2003/050803_Reagan_Clean_Sweep.stm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Tony Mattson" Subject: USS MISSOURI FUEL CONSUMPTION A minor deviation from ship appearances but an interesting diversion nevertheless - the USS Missouri Memorial Association runs a web site on which the association has posted Mighty Mo's fuel consumption at different speeds. Being numerically inclined I was interested to see that the most economical speed for this great ship was 16 knots, at which speed she consumed 8516 litres of fuel an hour, or 532 litres per knot. (see http://www.ussmissouri.com/speedVSFuel.aspx) But this speed was only half of her maximum of around 32 knots. And at 32 knots Mighty Mo' consumed 40,060 litres of fuel, or 1,251 litres per knot. Now there are some pretty big logistical implications for a vessel using a truck load of fuel every hour. But of more interest to me: something happens to fuel consumption above 16 knots. At this speed the fuel consumption curve breaks back upwards, it's not a smooth change but is quite sharp - as if there is an overdrive or turbocharger that kicks in to lift the speed above 16 knots, or extra boilers that fire up to provide the extra power for the GE turbines to lift above 16 kts. Being a mechanical simpleton and a new list-member I'm hopeful that there is a knowledgeable old salt (or an infracaninophile for that matter - love that word!) out there who may have enough knowledge of Mighty Mo's power train to be able to explain this. Any ideas? Many grateful thanks TONY MATTSON Scale Marine Modellers Association Auckland New Zealand ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Ken LeClair Subject: Bismarck Decks Hello All, I am presently building the Tamiya 1/350 Bismarck and am using the Book by Harold Ballard and the FineArts model at http://www.fineartmodels.com/bismarck_0000_thumbs.htm as a reference. A friend suggested I research more to find out if the Fine Arts model is accurate when it comes to planked wooden decking, other than on 1Deck. Any advice would be appreciated. Webb RAN Ship Drawings Folks: This message is to Graham Murdoch and anyone else familiar with the P.A. Webb series of ship drawings that we have been discussing here in recent days: does anyone know if he published plans of any of the British County class cruisers that served in the RN or RAN in WWII? Just curious, though there may be a future project brewing here.... TIA.
