APC sells a fiber optic kit but it retails for around $35.00 and its only for a two foot bundle. << If you don't mind getting dirty, find a junkyard in your area and look for old Cadillacs. For many years, they have used two strands of Fiber Optic that extend from tail lights to a point above the rear pasenger seat; you can salvage about 16 feet per car. I went down to my local "Pick A Part" some years ago and got a couple of hundred feet in an afternoon, for which they charged my $ 5. What has piqued my "reading" question is how you read the marks? Did some poor unfortunate swabbie have to "hike out" from the lifeline? When in a circumstance such that the draft value was important, I presume the vessel would be going "dead slow". Add a fourth turret for the 16 (or 12)-inch guns; add a fourth barrel to each main deck (not superfiring) 16-inch turret; << Adding a fourth turret would be pretty difficult unless you intend to lengthen the hull. You might check my response to Mike Bartel in SMML 2195 regarding a possible way to add a fourth turret to an Iowa. You should keep in mind though that these four turreted ships from early 1938 had greatly reduced armor. I don't think anyone ever designed a designed a CB with four triple 12" guns, but in principle, you could do something similar by lengthening the hull. The trick is, where do you get an Alaska kit to lengthen? There are plenty of Iowa kits out there to modify, but I think the only Alaska kits are in resin, which would make for a pricey project. I've never spliced a resin hull, so I can't recommend any techniques. Converting a triple turret to a quad is a bit difficult, but not impossible. Most quad turrets were rather problematical in the real world, though, so I'd probably go with four triples. >> maybe redesign the 5-inch/38 dual turrets to accomodate a triple configuration; << I'm not sure that this would accomplish much. The 5" L38 twin mount was about the best dual purpose mount available in WW2. >> or replace them with 6-inch dual turrets; << There was the post war 6" used on the Worcester and Roanoke, but they weren't that good. Probably not worthwhile. The Brits made a better 6" automatic, but it's probably unsuitable as a secondary gun. If I were doing a retrofitted British ship, I'd use 4.5" instead. >> add a third catapault on the after superfiring 16-inch turret; or even add dual cats to the Iowas amidships like the Alaska Class, while retaining the two fantail cats; << Nothing to stop you from doing either of these things, but again, one must ask why..... >> maybe lengthen the hull; << Certainly recommended given some of the other modifications you're thinking about! You might want to increase the beam as well, but then you're starting to get into the realm of Montanas. (not that that's necessarily a bad thing) >> add independent search and fire control radars for port and starboard secondary batteries; add CIWS (even to the WW2 BB/CB); things of that nature. Other ideas? << My favorite thing to do is to add Talos missiles! There were some actual proposals in the 1950s to convert Alaskas (specifically the Hawaii) and Iowas (specifically the Kentucky) to Talos guided missile armament. Also what is the Difference between 32 14/d and 33 14/d? Best wishes C. S. Bailey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Pwesty" Subject: decommission and stricken? Hi List I was just wondering something about the many decommission aircraft carriers that the US Navy has laying about. It a case national emergey how easy would it to reactive the ones that are decommission and stricken (I E the Saratoga and Forestall, America etc etc) or are those carriers all lost causes? Just wondering and thanks ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Pieter Cornelissen Subject: Re: Alexander III Mr Przezdziecki. given the harsh tone of the review and the detailed character of it I would really like to see your sources on the list. So far I am temped to buy a kit of Slava or Alexandr III because of the review. I just walked up to them as they were taking a break from their manhole. I explained what I needed, and they were more than happy to help me out. Not all of them do this fiber optic stuff but if you find a nice guy he or she may be able to point you in the right direction. Hope that this helps you. Everyone, I collect the name badges, Nats pins and judges pins from IPMS/USA National conventions. I would really like to get the badges & pins from the conventions I have personally attended, but I'm interested in any IPMS/USA National Convention. I was looking through my collection recently of the Nats that I have attended and noticed some "holes".  Specifically the contest, and judges pins from the 1994 Nats in Omaha, name badge, judges and contest pins from the 1988 Dayton Nats (my first Nats), and the name badge, contest and judges pins from the 1992 Seattle Nats. I'll be happy to pay a reasonable price and all shipping. Please contact me if you have any of these badges or pins and are willing to part with them. Off topic? Read on! I own Flagship Models Inc. and would be willing to trade photo etch for the stuff as well. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc.
