It appears to be an 1890s vintage protected cruiser or second-class cruiser. I have searched through Hovgaard's Modern History of Warships and can't find a match. Only a one-stacker and the main turrets (no secondary armament) seem to be of the late 1890s vintage. Does anyone recognize her, or is it simply a generic or composite done from the modeler's imagination. Thenks for any help. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2532183855&category=37970&rd=1 Jim Bloom ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Richard Rathgeber Subject: USS Narwhal & Nautilas colours I am trying to find out what color the USS Narwhal and USS Nautilus were painted prior to World War II. In looking at the photos it appears to be nearly white though I imagine it must be lighter color gray. Also was the hull painted the standard red lead color? Any other help concerning these ships would be greatly appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Ray" Subject: CA-134 class I'm having a really terrible time finding a set of hull sections or faired lines (other that wiswesser) for the Des Moines class cruisers. Floating Drydock has an excellent set of plans but no hull sections. I would appreciate any help from anyone out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "KLW" Subject: Re: USS Constellation & Mobile Bay Tom, Right off the top of my head, I think either Enterprise, Kitty Hawk, or John Kennedy may have a longer service life than Connie. As I say, though, that is off the top of my head so I hope no one will take my head off if I am wrong. For the Mobile Bay in 700, the best photoetch is Eduard followed by Gold Medal Models. Have you considered doing the Mobile Bay in 350 scale? The size is much easier to work with for us old farts and it makes a good model, especially when the photoetch is added. The Ranger lost her anchor chains to one of the new carriers. The FORRESTAL was halfway thru an overhaul/upgrade when she was decommissioned - my understanding is they would have to put her back together just to upgrade her - if everything was left where it is supposed to be - probably would be the last on the list. And of course as stated with all mothballed ships many of the parts they require are not longer manufactured and in many cases the companies that supplied them are no longer in business. Every so often a mothballed ship will be recomissioned, usually an auxiliary. But very rare for a stricken ship to be recomissioned as in the case of several of the carriers. The problem now is what to do with them - they can no longer be sent overseas to be scrapped and I do not think any company is going to even try considering what happened with the CORAL SEA scrapping adventure. I am more knowledgable about Chevys and ships... Thanks!!! << I know that Sedan de Villes from the 80's had them, and it was the type of system that looked like it was going to linger, and it accomplished the task simply, cheaply and without need for future maintenance. It has been a number of years since I last trod upon the mud of my local dismantler, but a trip there might yield all kinds of interesting bits. The FO cable was a single black wire, about .080 in diameter, that extended from each tail light section, through the rear fenders and up into the top of the rear passenger window where it terminated in a dual bezel. Sure, it can be done the old fashion way of tracing the drawing by hand but the fact is that CAD produced drawings beat all but the VERY best of the human efforts hands down. However while it isn't all that hard to create a CAD drawing of parts of the ship (like bridges or superstructure details) it is quite a task to try to draw the full plan or side view just by measuring the original drawing. Even trying to measure correctly all the complicated curves and planes isn't something which can be easily done (IMO anyway). Since my knowledge of CAD is very limited I have a question to those who use it often: is it possible to scan an existing drawing into a CAD program and that, using overlay as a sort of tracing paper, trace the drawing onto the overlay restoring and correcting as you go??? All advice would be gratefully appreciated. It now consists of THREE sets in one! You guys are the first to see the first image since it came into me this afternoon (well, besides John Snyder of course!). Take a peek! http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/white.ensign.models/wembrass/wempe3536.jpg It is A4 size, and will be etched in 5 thou brass. There is a second fret being put together right now, which will contain all the light Anti-aircraft and weapons details, and is about 1/3 A4 size. This set will also be available separately, for your other WW2 US Navy projects, as WEM PE 3555 1/350 WW2 US ANT-AIRCRAFT WEAPONS and FITTINGS.... if you buy it separately, it will be priced at 7.62 Pounds. A third set will be included .... this will consist of the radars and floater baskets. This set is 1/2 A4 in size. These THREE frets together will constitute WEM PE 3536 1/350 USS ESSEX "The Ship", and for all pre-orders, it will be priced at the original 27.66 Pounds. However, due to the unexpected addition of the second and third sets, when the set is released in around 2 weeks time, the price will go up to 40.81 Pounds. Place your pre-order now, if you haven't already done so, and you will get this set at the cheaper price ;^) Go to http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_1_350_Scale_Photo_Etch_40.html to place your pre-order. WEM PE 3554 1/350 USS ESSEX Perforated Catwalks will be available as a separate item, but is almost TWICE as big as we anticipated... between 2/3 A4 size and A4 size. The price, unfortunately, will have to rise from 16.13 Pounds, to either 22.09, or 27.66, depending on how well Peter manages to compact it down by juggling the images on the sheet! If you have pre-ordered this set, you will get it at the original price.
