Allen" Subject: Re: Is that really true? >> just a rumor like in the 80's that the Reagan administration wanting to be back the USS Oriskany back on line? << Not a rumor. Plans to recom at least one of the Essex-class were discussed at length. Oriskany was mentioned as a possibility becasue she was in pretty good shape at the time. I can remember that much from the news reports, much less later records of it. I also caught refeneces to the Oriskany discussions in the Congressional Record when I was researching (in the mid-'80s) the BB reactivation plans. One of the criteria governing the F-/A-18 grogram in its early stages was a desire for a modern aircraft that could operate off the SCB-125 deck. Steve Allen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Marine steam turbines In the late 1890s a British "gentleman engineer" named Charles Parsons developed a small coal-fired steam turbine engine for use in a small vessel, but was unable to convince the Admiralty of its potential. He installed a turbine in a small boat (about 50 feet or so in length) named TURBINIA. When the Royal Navy held a Review, with the Prince of Wales as the principal guest, at Spithead in 1897 as part of the celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, TURBINIA suddenly appeared and sped amongst the prides if the British Home Fleet, and outran the fastest of the Royal Navy's new torpedo boats. This bold performance got the attention of the embarrassed admirals and soon the Navy had some small turbine powered ships. Less than 10 years after Parson's audacious deed the LUSITANIA was launched, having huge turbines generating a total of some 68,000 horsepower of thrust. Now, almost 100 years later, steam turbines remain as the major choice as propulsion for large fast ships. That's all I know about the event. Any SMML people care to add to the above?
