Net access & how tired we are after the day's activities will determine if SMML goes out while we're in the ACT. All the best, Shane & Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "prlhobo" Subject: For Franklyn I am amazed at the depth of your naval knowledge...any idea who Charlie Noble is? Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: NAVYDAZE Subject: Re: USS SALEM There is also a group in Milwaukee, of which I am part of, is raising money to get the USS DES MOINES which is still being held by the Navy. Hey, one or the other would be fine with me! Michael Donegan NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Douglas Burleigh Subject: Can You Help? I would like a copy of the two articles by Bob Santos published in Ships in Scale on how he built his model of the USS Langley (CV-1) in 1/700. The articles were in the July/August 95 issue (Vol. VI No. 4 p. 9-11) and in September/October 95 issue (Vol. VI No. 5 p. 20-23). Please contact me off list if you can help. Doug Burleigh ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Leonard, Michael W" Subject: CV Reactivation >> There is now neither a plan nor a reason to reactivate any aircraft carrier from reserve. If another aircraft carrier is needed, the fastest and cheapest source is simply to continue the present commission of USS Constellation (CV 64). However, the plan is to decommission Constellation this summer. << Mike Potter is quite correct here. None of the decommissioned US carriers will ever sail again under their own power. They're 40+ years old, worn out internally, technically obsolete, and require an enormous amount of manpower that just isn't available. Nor does the Navy have any interest in reviving troublesome oil-burning propulsion plants when more efficient nuclear plants are being constantly refined. In fact, the Boiler Technician rate doesn't even exist any more. If contigency operations mean extending normal deployments from six months to nine months (see ABRAHAM LINCOLN) to a year or longer, that's just what will happen. There is also a plan (part of "Sea Power 21") to make greater use of Amphibious Strike Groups -- centered around LHDs/LHAs -- which can at least operate the AV-8 "Harrier" in low-intensity situations where they can take the place of a CV/CVN. MWL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Leonard, Michael W" Subject: Internal Waterline Franklyn observed - >> I happened to notice a reference to something I had never heard of, namely that a black waterline was painted all around the inside of U. S. Navy ships. In 1918, anyway. I thought getting a waterline on the outside straight and correct was a difficult thing, but on the inside it is infinitely more so. No mention is made of the purpose of this internal waterline, and I just can't come up with any reason, let alone a good one. Can any SMML people tell us if this is still done, or how, or why? << It would appear to have made absolutely no sense in 1918, 2003, or any year in between! MWL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Jeffry Fontaine" Subject: Flagship Models 1/35th scale CIWS Rusty; Have you discontinued this kit? I finally got enough money saved up towards purchasing this kit and was looking forward to doing so before the Nationals got underway. I also mentioned the kit to another fellow and he wanted to know more about it so I sent him to your web page only to discover that you are not showing the kit on your page any longer. Are you going to continue selling this kit? Regards, Jeffry Fontaine Bremerton, Washington ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Edwparent Subject: First Ship with electric lights-Answer Sorry to keep you all in suspense so long. The answer is SS COLUMBIA, a 3200 ton steel ship which sailed on May 1880 from Chester Pennsylvania to San Francisco California via the Horn. She carried 115 of Edison's new electric lights and none of them burned out during the voyage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: andrew jones Subject: ACT Well i'll be there..look out for the 1/72 Fine Molds Kaiten..that will be my hunk of junk, lol regards Andrew Jones ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: ACTSMS show See you there!
