A few weeks ago I read The Royal Navy in Focus In WWII Part II.. In it was a picture of HMS Mohawk laying on her side in shallow water where she had been sunk by a torpedo from the Italian destroyer Tarigo. The next book I read was Wings of War, which is a compilation of anecdotal stories from airmen on both sides of the conflict. One of the stories was from a reconnaissance pilot who flew out of Malta. It seems he had met a certain young lady who struck his fancy at a social engagement. War being what it is, he was unable to see the girl again. He was then invited to another party a few weeks later and was informed the young lady would be there. Unfortunately he was scheduled for a flight at 1430 that day to look for an enemy convoy and would be back to late for the party. Apparently when nobody was looking he changed the departure time to 1130, to get the op in, and be back in time for the party. Enemy convoy be damned, love was in the air. Then mother nature got in to the act and the weather closed right in. If he did not get the mission in, he would be first to fly the next day, therefore no party. He took off any ways, flying on the deck in the general direction of the convoy. At the extreme end of the search, he almost flew in to a ships mast. The convoy! For the next couple of hours he flew in the clouds reporting on its position. Mission accomplished he flew back to Malta. In the mean time the RN sent out four destroyers to attack the enemy convoy, which they did, sinking 5 enemy freighter, 2 destroyers and damaging another one. There only loss was............... HMS Mohawk! Our intrepid flyboy got to the party only to find out the girl of his dreams had been evacuated to England to join the WAAF. (OK here is the Paul Harvey bit) And now you know the rest of the story. No photograph is available as of yet, but photographs of their other resin kits look really good. A note should be made about this company's website navigation; very sensitive to disruption. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Katz, Gene S" Subject: Pulling the Leg of a Green Shipmate I've heard and done all of the ones written about here. One that nobody has mentioned is one in the Royal Navy (and maybe the RCN and RAN too); something about sending the newest kid aboard to find a "key". Maybe it was the key to a "watch" or the "Captain's organ" or similar. Telling him that the CMAA has it. And when he requests the key from the CMAA, he is told that the XO now has it, who directs him to the Chief Steward, etc. Supposedly it continues until the newbie finally grasps the concept! In the Italian Navy, the practice of using the newest and youngest kid aboard includes having him read a traditional Naval poem/prayer (like our Eternal Father Navy Hymn) over the PA circuits at their version of Taps. This isn't pulling a leg, just introducing the kid to a historical tradition of the Fleet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Harold Stockton" Subject: 1/350 Panda Models USS Arleigh Burke On Panda Models website about their new 1/350 USS Arleigh Burke, they say the following: "Now China-based modeling pioneer Panda Models brings the Arleigh Burke to scale-model form, with state-of-the-art 3D design technology for state-of-the-art detail! Using this advanced 3D rendering process, Panda is able to effect flawless 360-degree modeling in design ... capturing individual parts, assemblies and schematics of the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class Destroyer as they really are, as well as how these individual components work together -- 3D design in action!" The model can be seen at: http://www.pandamodels.com/html/Arleigh%20Burke%20.html, and appears to be a fairly detailed rendition of the real thing. I cannot comment on the price of the kit except that they do furnish a photoetched sheet for the railings. Does anyone make an aftermarket one? I looked but did not see one sold by WEM. << Hi Peter, We make 1/350 Seahawks. Order part number FD 036. They come two to a bag, with their own photoetch. >> Interesting! What would be the right camouflage colour of Graf Spee during the La Plata raid? << Hi Frank, GRAF SPEE's basic scheme was Dunkelgrau 51 on the hull, and Hellgrau 50 on the superstructure, with steel decks painted in Dunkelgrau 2. When they painted her camo pattern on the superstructure they used two colors: Dunkelgrau 51, and the even darker Dunkelgrau 2. Good closeup photos taken in Montevideo harbor after the battle clearly show the two different colors used in the pattern. Stennis. Panda is planning to do these 1/350 Russian ships; one Russian and two PLA (Chinese) "Sovremennys" (sic): one is to be the Hangzhau. Also, In their planned release of the USS-51 USS Arleigh Burke (Block I), they are going to do the DDG-53 USS John Paul Jones (Block I), DDG-73 USS Decatur (Block II), DDG-77 USS O'Kane (Block II), DDG-79 Oscar Austin (Flight IIA and lead ship), and the DDG-81 Winston S. Churchill (Flight IIA). An impressive list. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Carol & Lindsay Charman Subject: Ship plans sought: HMS Ocean (current vessel) and ULCC Jahre Viking Hi all, I have been trying to find a set of basic general arrangement drawings of the current HMS Ocean, and the 'Ultra Large Crude Carrier' (rather large oil tanker) called Jahre Viking. The former is the UK's major amphibious ship, and I understand the latter is currently the largest vessel in the world. These drawings are intended for scratchbuilding projects in 1:700 waterline. Trawling the net has not yield plans of either - can anyone offer any suggestions, or know of any existing and available plans? Cheers Lindsay ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "chris" Subject: American Civil War ships Hi All, I am writing on behalf of an Australian manufacturer who is interested in starting up a line of 1/72 ships from the American Civil War. Looking more toward the river gunboats rather than the open ocean ships. Can someone point me in the direction of a good source for scale plans etc? Thanks, Chris Evenden Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: John Kutina Subject: Military.com http://www.military.com/NewContent?file=Goss_060303 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Reynaga, Tim@EDD" Subject: linoleum on the No. 13 class >> I am currently putting PE on Tamiya's little 1/700 Ch #13 class subchaser kit and about to start painting. Although the back of the box shows the deck as being dark grey, I understand many IJN ships (cruisers and destroyers anyway) had linoleum on their external decks, particularly early in the war, ie 1942. Does anyone on the board know if these subchasers also had linoleum on their decks. << Ken, Tamiya actually markets two completely different versions of the No. 13 class subchaser in 1/700 scale. I take it from your post that you are building the newer one (sold with the Harashima minesweeper and No. 19 class minelayer). This is an original Tamiya tooling with, as I recall, smooth decks. The other version (formerly marketed by Skywave/PitRoad and before that by Green Max in Japan) shows nonslip tread detail throughout the main weather deck. If that interpretation is correct, it would seem these ships had no linoleum. Also, the "Illustrations of Imperial Japanese Navy Vessels" book by Model Art Japan as well as the illustration in Jenschura, Jung, and Mickel's "Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945" both show these ships without the linoleum. I'd say your best bet would be to depict the decks as gray-painted steel.
