He was given a strict going over. I said wrong street because he was given specific instructions to send people down the main road past the Marines barracks. He did not do so and got reprimanded. Needless to say I was stopped by a number of locals and asked for my watch and my lunch. Thank God nothing happened... that was in broad daylight. Nighttime would have been a very different story... I would have needed God and a whole army (or navy) of angels! It does have an excellent museum and a 1/72 scale USS Forrestal along with numerous other great stuff. Not worth a life or hospital visit though. If you call the yard and ask for directions follow them to the letter. IHS, Ralph B ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject: Raumboote painting "Warship 2002-2003" (Conway) contains a major article on Raumboote with some monochrome photos which give patterns (including one vessel with a JG26-like Grünherz!) but no colour details - however the references listed to that article may have more details. John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject: aircraft carriers, original and conversion All the standard references like Roger Chesneau's tome, and Freidman on US and UK carriers, and Stefan Terzibaschitsh's books on US carriers, are now getting rather elderly, with publication dates in the eighties. Do list members know of any plans for revised editions of any of them, to take into account recent French, Spanish, Italian, Thai, Russian and US vessels? PS Does any list subscriber except Roger Chesneau know that his book was translated into Italian? John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "James Britten Stokes" Subject: Need information about models from the Ukraine Seacraft Classics sold me a wonderfully detailed model of Morgan's yacht Corsair IV, that was made for them in the Ukraine I believe. My question is about the makers over there and where do they buy the unbelievably detailed fittings that they use? I'm looking for sources for steamship fittings in a scale close to 1:10 to use to increase the detail on a model of the Queen's yacht Britannia. James Stokes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Steven P. Allen Subject: Pics of Piers I'm looking for pics of piers. I'm just about ready to starting building the base of a pierside diorama, and I need to have some pictures of the sides. The "deck" of the pier is no problem, but I've not been able to find many pics of the sides. I suppose there is not "standard," of course, but anything to give me a general idea would help. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. Steve Allen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Richa5011 Subject: Re: Washington Navy Yard Area -WARNING Mr. Katz has summed up the area/situation well. To his comments I would add: 1. Taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap in DC....when in doubt, take a cab. There are limits to what they can charge and it is set from Zone to Zone within the city and posted on the inside of the cab. 2. The NHC now requests that you make an appointment (preferably 30+ days in advance of your visit - though it IS possible to get an appointment on less callendar) 3. Bring your own lunch. 4. When in doubt, ask permission before taking a photo of anyone or anything on the Navy Yard Property or the nearby USMC Barracks...this applies to all US Military Installations. They are very concerned about people taking snapshots of the entry gate and approaches. 5. Be prepared to show your identification and explain specifically who/what you are there to see. Especially if you might give the appearance that you might be of certain ethnicity's. Sad that these precautions are necessary, but these are the times we live in. C'mon, guys. Somebody's got to have something for us!!! << The only two things I have ever seen in print on these ships are: Janes Fighting Ships listing in 1919 US Warships of WW. I by Silverstone What specifically are you looking to find out? Nat Richards ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Melvin Burmaster" Subject: A-140 Design models As one of the fans of "never builts" we in that realm have stumbled across a resin 1/700 scale A-140 pre-Yamato design which apparently is for sale but where??? The pictures to date of the model indicate a nice bit of work went into same. If anyone has a firm lead as to the maker of the model and how to contact same for purchases, please post. I've contacted some of the "usual suspects" but so far no help. One respondent told me to try J-Airplanes site but I've already tried that (by the way, the site is under construction) and the one response I got indicated a misunderstanding by the reader that I was perceived as wanting to purchase the A-140 which the respondent owned. There are several of us intereted so this is seemingly worthwhile. Furthermore, anyone had any success in wheedling out the offerings by Ocean Mirage? Seems unless you have a contact going to Japan, you're out of luck! I have a BIG confusion regarding pom pom guns. I have seen them characterised as 28mm, 37mm and 40.5 mm guns. Which one is right? Maybe all of them and the concept of pom pom has nothing to do with caliber. If this is the case, can anyone please tell me what type Kelly had in her quad mounting behind the funnel? Also, regarding quad mountings, I have seen them in "4 in a row" arrangement (CV-6 Enterprise) and 2+2 (like Kelly). Can anyone comment on this too. I'm new to smml so please forgive if these questions are rather basic. Thanks Aleck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: andrew jones Subject: Misc: Lexington & Titanic Was just looking at Hobbylink Japan & one of their future releases is a 1/700 battle of Coral Sea Lexington by Fujimi ..finally I dont have to worry about figuring out or waiting for someone to do a conversion for their old kit!! Titanic: Lee kit 1:550... Figures: is there a set out there for 1:550 or i guess i could use 1:500 scale figures & railings etc... the boats that come with the lee kit are covered..is there any way to get 1:550/500 boats as i want to do one Lee Titanic, sinking & need to show the boats being rowed away & cant really have figures sitting on top of the covered boats, unless i see if i cant drill out the top of the boats & see what that does..... regards Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "William B Luther" Subject: Irwin 30 Plans To: David and Alison >> I desperately and urgently need a plan and side view of an Irwin 30 sailboat...and any info you may have on its underwater shape(s). << Give me the year of the Irwin and your address and I'll see what I can dig up out of my old Cruising World and Sail Annuals. The Irwin Yachts web site is down at the moment but there is a "Owners web site", http://www.angelfire.com/fl/irwinsailboats/ that you might want to investigate. I think you might be able to find additional info by running goggle searches. I got 138 hits on a "Irwin Yachts" search and 691 with a "Irwin 30" search. I'll let you dig through them. Bill Luther ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Peter Subject: Club Tales Recently a guy in a club I belong to came to a meeting with an inaccurately build ship, noting that he had put it together "for fun." Of course we immediately beat the tar out of him and banished him to the Gundam section of the local hobby shop. We won't let him back in until he buys us all old Renwal kits off Ebay as apology gifts. The rest of us at the meeting continued a spirited discussion of the rivet count on an aft sponson on our long-planned (since 1956 for most of us, though a few members inherited the planning from their fathers) but so far not constructed 1/4 scale Enterprise (as she was at 14:09:23 (GMT)). Our need for complete accuracy demands such a large scale. Several of us have already completed the necessary surgery to have our fingers cut down to 1/4 scale, allowing us to comfortablely hold the mini-welding gear we need to employ-- glue is for kid's models. I mean, point me toward a real warship made with GLUE for gosh sakes. Once it is done, we plan to shoot BBs at it and throw Blackcats into the hull until it is reduced to (scale) dust. We'll enter the dust into the next big model contest and hope for a prize. Anyway, no one in the club has actually completed a model. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "RUSSELL SMITH" Subject: Translation Please A couple of weeks ago, I emailed Hp Models about some missing parts to one of my kits. This is the answer I received from Franz Mollmann: "Mit Freundlichen Gruessen" As my German is very limited I have no idea what this means. DOES ANY ONE KNOW OF A SHIP MODEL OF A LSD., NEWER CLASS LIKE LSD-29 PLYMOUTH ROCK? << Harry: You missed our annual Greater Chicago Area Model Boat Show in Oakbrook in March. The WI Maritime Museum Model Boat and Ship Show and Contest in Manitowoc, WI (not exactly Chicago, but many of us go for this) is being held August 8, 9 and 10. The Nautical Research Guild Annual Conference is being held here October 9-12 in Arlington Heights. There will be vendors as well as a model display. Contact me at kurtvd19***@voyager.net (remove the 3 *** for e-mail to work) for information on any of these events. Also, there are 3 area scale model ship clubs. You may want to consider joining one or more of them. Thanks, Chris Evenden Canberra ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: WEM Communication Problems Hi All, If it appears that Caroline and I have been a bit silent, or if you've been trying unsuccessfully to reach us, it's because our phone lines went out last Thursday. We're still waiting for BT to fix the problem, but it looks like it will be Friday at the earliest before our service will be restored (don't EVEN ask about the excuses we've been given, no two of which are the same). In the meantime, all phone calls and faxes are being automatically re-routed to Dave at Gardener's Cottage, so WEM is still answering questions and processing orders. I CAN tell you that we're busy packing a lot of new photoetch sets and labelling new paint colours, so visit the website to see what's new and available. I just e-mailed Dave scans of the new Essex PE, which is really stunning.
