It is a very common ending of German business mail. It takes the place of "sincerely" in English correspondence. Viel Spass beim Basteln! (Have fun modelmaking!) Bernhard Kayser ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Don Macdonald" Subject: Re: Family shots of LST Hey nice job on the pictures of your Dad's LST Wish they were up when I was doing a model for crew member that serve on LST 1047 about 2 years ago. That Don took to the reunion in Washingtion befor he pass away. Never did fine out what happen to the ship after he pass on but he was very happy with it and built a real nice case for it. Those pictures would have help me alot. I just had to say those look good !! Don That Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: CapnAgee Subject: Re: USS Maricopa County David - Thank you for the pix of USS Maricopa County! I was having difficulty finding bow, stern and deck shots of her in the Korean War Era and you have answered my prayers. I'm doing her in 1/96 using a Scale Shipyard hull from Lee Upshaw. By the way, Maricopa County is the Arizona home of Tempe. Mesa and, oh yeah, the town to the West ... Phoenix. Ray Agee ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Sab1156 Subject: Re: Translation please Dear Russel, Mit freundlichen Gruessen means: with friendly greetings. This is usually used in Germany for lesser formal letters. Best Regards Detlef ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Mac Dale Subject: Glue ships >> I'd bet the USS Sea Shadow is held together mostly by an adhesive. :-D << Or the Norwegian Stealth Ship Skjold... http://gwardnet.d2g.com/mac/macamodius/Skjold.htm http://gwardnet.d2g.com/mac/ Mac's Naval Photography Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Sab1156 Subject: Re: Translations and the result Dear Russ, I spoke this morning with H.P. in Germany and he told me about your parts. The postal fees are very high in Germany and since Pacific Front orders every month from them, its the cheapest way for them to send the parts to the USA. Regards Detlef ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: John Mianowski Subject: Early 20th Century Ships' Registry? I'm looking for some kind of list (& ultimately, a source of plans) for a variety of merchant ships that would have sailed under the flags of the warring powers in WWI, WWII, & inter-war. Things like Liberty Ships, Victory Ships, etc. are easy to find - I'd like to find some more unique specimens. Any ideas? Thanks, JM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Leonard, Michael W" Subject: 1:500 Figures Andrew Jones wrote - >> Figures: is there a set out there for 1:550 or i guess i could use 1:500 scale figures & railings etc. << Preiser makes a set of 1/500 scale unpainted plastic figures. I think about eight to a pack. Try Walthers or another model railroad supplier. MWL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Michael London" Subject: Aircraft Carriers >> One rarely hears anything about aircraft carriers of nations other than England and the U.S. I must admit to total ignorance of any French, Spanish, Italian, Thai (THAI?), or Russian carriers. Are there any others? << How about Argentina (INDEPENDENCIA and 25 DE MAYO) , Australia (SYDNEY, VENGEANCE and MELBOURNE), Brazil (MINAS GERAIS), Canada (WARRIOR, MAGNIFICENT, BONAVENTURE), India (VIKRANT), Netherlands (KAREL DOORMAN). These are ex-British (Not English, Franklyn, please) ships of the COLOSSUS and MAJESTIC Classes. I need a translation for this! Does it mean you have actually started to build something, or that you are still going through the box and haven't finished examining all the parts! ; ) Darren (sorry, couldn't resist!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Devin Subject: Re: Fujimi 'new' Lex and Sara While it is true that the photos of the 'new' Lex and Sara kits are the same old inaccurate models with swapped markings, I'm going to wait until they're actually released to know for sure. Remember, Tamiya was showing a version of the old Matchbox kit for many months pre-release, causing everyone to write off the model before it was even on sale. Fujimi could be doing the same, using the old kits for examples because the new ones are not yet ready. That being said, I don't really believe that is what is happening, but I'll hold judgment until I see the new versions in person. Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: PaulShip37 Subject: Re: Translation please My high school German is a bit rusty, but I think that "Mit freundliche gruessen" means "with grease-fried lichen". This is an old model railroad material that I've seen used successfully as camouflage on an old Revell Tirpitz. (well, you need something to hide that kit.) Though I must admit that it was one of the few kits to show any below the waterline through-hull details. In the long ago(age 10) I speculated that the Germans might have sent midget subs in and out through the strange grating that appeared on the kit below the waterline. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Eagle boat model To: Ed Grune Although I obviously had nothing to do with your decision to make a model of an Eagle boat, I do heartily applaud your so doing. I salute you, sir, along with others who "adopt" any unusual ship and take on the making of a model of it. The literature research usually associated with such a project can often become utterly fascinating. In my case digging out information on the WW 1 wooden-hulled 110 Ft. Submarine Chaser approached becoming an all consuming passion, aside from the model itself. As one modeler put it, "Well at least it keeps you off the streets, out of the bar rooms, and away from wantonly wild women" (yeah, dammit, and a wantonly wild woman wants what I want, wow!!!). But I must publicly confess that my purpose in generating the Eagle boat thread was to plant the seed of an unusual vessel in the fertile collective minds of SMML and see what would happen (that's the infracaninophile in me). Having your project surface was a bonus. I hope to see a photo of it on SMML sometime. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: SANDYMOOR Subject: Richelieu color info and book needed I'm getting ready to build Heller's 1/400 Richelieu and need help with- 1)At one time during WW II the Richelieu appeared in an attractive scheme where the funnel area and turrets appear to be a very dark color; the main superstructure and a small upper section of the hull appears a very light color; and the lower hull section (actually most of it) appears a medium color. Can anyone identify these colors? 2)Does anyone have a copy of the following book they'd being willing to sell or trade- "Richelieu" by Sarnet and Le Vaillant, publisher- Marines Editions.
