Now I am reluctant to specifically associate the remark with any of the several people suggested by respondents. Hey, it might even have been that most prolific of all writers, Anon E. Muss, for all I know. But thanks for sharing your opinions with us. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Ambrose Cannel Lightship Now that my 1:48 scratch-built model of a WW 1 U.S. Navy 110 Ft, submarine chaser has been encased, I now have a spin-off hobby of generating provenances of specific vessels of the SC-1 Class of WW 1 vessel, for descendants of crew members, and other interested people, on a pro bono (fee-free) basis. Yes, pro bono, hey, it's a hobby to me, fagawdsayk, an avocation, not a vocation. In the process of researching my model to ensure accuracy, I have accumulated a wealth of drawings, specifications, photographs, literature, reports, books, magazine articles, etc., with the help of Captain Ted Treadwell's website (contact him at for WW 2 chasers), of SMML subscriber and superior modeler Art Herrick, of miniature modeler Michael Leonard, and others. Captain Treadwell wants to concentrate on the WW 2 version, and has generously turned his WW 1 files over to me. I am currently compiling a history of SC60 which was rammed and sunk on the night of October 1, 1918, with the loss of two crewmen. The Navy report I have states that the location was 5 miles south of Ambrose Channel Lightship and 2 miles north of Shrewsbury Rock gas buoy, but does not give any latitude or longitude. The crewman's descendant is of the opinion that it was off Cape May (N.J.), but I think the Ambrose Cannel Lightship was (at that time) located in the "lower" regions of New York Harbor. I do not have any navigation charts of New York Harbor, or of Cape May. Therefore I request SMML subscribers to please help me to locate correctly the position of the lightship and the gas buoy as of 1918 (or reasonably close in time and space). Latitudes and longitudes would be most useful, as will any other landmarks. If you can scan any portions of maps or charts, I would appreciate having such scans e-mailed to me. Comments (as always) will be welcome. Thank you. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Roger Chesneau Subject: Re: New books Graeme I'm sorry to say that the books you refer to, although they made it to the printing presses, have not made it to the booksellers because Chatham Publishing have gone into receivership. I've no idea at the moment when - or even if - they will appear. Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: andrew jones Subject: Re: Frustrated Modeller Hi there...maybe what you shoudl do is just take a break...a few weeks or months... just walk away & take a break & then try again later.. I often feel that way( i work on my kits every night as i try to finish 1or 2 kits every month, though really lucky to finish 1...i just go play PS2 for a few days & then get back to working on my kits ..i think at one stage or another we all think about giving the whole thing in ..so just have a rest & then start out slowly & im sure you will get back into the swing of things. regards AJ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: andrew jones Subject: book review: Osprey u-boat bases and bunkers 41-45 I must say their work on bases range of books is looking quite good, though their ship ones, from what I have seen don't appear too crash hot. Osprey includes a conversion table for those in recent posts about different weights & stuff, lol This is agood book for those interested in U-boat bunkers & especially if you want to do a diorama of U-boats inside their bases in France etc..anyone that has the 1/35th (or whatever the largest scale u-boat on the market is) U-boat perhaps? lol The book covers design & construction, a brief description of inside of a bunker, how they stood up to the rigors of Allied bombings, the life inside, Resident Flotillas & Commanders in Europe, a quick recognition of bases in the Far East, Bases @ War, what happned to the bunkers & bases after the war & lastly directions on how to view bases & bunkers. Excellent detail of photographs & their colour plates are quite good .. So if you want a book that is not very expensive and gives a good detail of the bases etc, I would suggest you have a look at it, next time you visit for your local military supply bookstore & check it out.... no harm in looking at it & giving your own opinion. regards Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: roger.antrobus Subject: 1/128 scale Walrus Does anyone know where I can buy a 1/128 scale Walrus bi-plane kit. I'm building a 1/128 scale battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth and need the planes for the catapult. Thanks in anticipation for any help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Sab1156 Subject: USS Oklahoma drawings Greetings to all. Colpar Hobbies ,or Pacific Front may have one in stock. (It's sold under the class name USS Vulcan) Both these places have web sites you can check into. If you can't find one, plese email me at fuelmann@hotmail.com. I'm in the process of moving right now, but should be back in production by the end of July. Floating Drydock sells a plan set for Ajax, in fact I used it to create the master for this kit. One interesting thing shown on the deck plan is the outline of a Coronado seaplane, showing how it could be stowed on deck for overseas transport. War Plan Orange called for these tenders to assist in setting up bases for the fleet after it's voyage across the Pacific.
