The name came from the county in New Jersey which donated, and hence purchased, the Revolutionary War ship you noted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: B17F >> In response to the search by Doug Marrel for a B-17F-110; I am assuming a -F110-BO here, you are probably out of luck for a straight-from-box kit. "Mirage" has announced a 1/48 -F (as well as a -G, but no details). In MY opinion, the best place to start for any Big-Tail B-17, is "Monogram's" B-17-G. It is a mid-series, roughly equivalent to a -G-35-BO. Very easy to work and modify, assuming you have information and a vacuum forming device of some sort. << You don't really want to start with a B17G. The G introduced the chin turret in the nose, while the F like earlier models had MGs mounted in the Plexiglass nose or in small "cheeks" just aft of and along side at the 9:00 and 3:00 positions. You would have to remove the turret and aft fairing, then restore the fuselage nose bottom area. Also there were probably differences in the shape and arrangement of the plexi nose and of other windows. As Jim C said, your best bet would be the Revel Memphis Belle Kit. If you do a search on Ebay under models on Memphis Belle, you will come up with several. Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: raisingirl Subject: Re: Poetry/naming carriers hello all.... Daniel Kurtz wrote: >> Battles or distinguished earlier ships, as were all carriers (with only a few exceptions) up until the USN discarded all poetry in naming these ships with the Kennedy. << I'd add that "discarding all poetry" regarding carrier names goes back even further, to when CVB-42 was renamed Franklin D. Roosevelt while she was under construction. That set a precedent that was followed later by the Forrestal (there was more than a little symbolism behind giving that name to the first "supercarrier") and every carrier from CV-67 on.... jodie (who wonders how long it'll take CVS-12's name to be recycled) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: WRPRESSIN Subject: Re: Camouflage of the QE 1941 O GOD. I shall have to go through my records. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: HARRY GILDAY Subject: civil war gunboat uss bombshell does anybody know where i can get info on the civil war gun boat,[ uss bombshell ]. the only thing i know for sure about it is that it was sunk by a confederate ship in abermarle sound. the confederates raised her & used it for awaile & then the union recaptured her later on. my great grand father, pvt john t mcvey an artilery man, was one of her crew. he survived the episode & returned to fortress monroe in virginia, where he was stationed. HARRY N GILDAY ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "David L. Miller" Subject: B-17 & B-24 Revell/Monogram makes a 1/48 B-17 F model, the Memphis Belle. I believe this is still available through Squadron or Model Expo. Revell/Monogram has discontinued their 1/48 B-24 models, and they have not been available through Squadron or M-Expo for over a year. I've looked a few times on e-bay, but did not find one. These are old kits, but they are also of good quality. I have made at least three of each for customers in the last five years. They wanted them as desk/shelf models for memorials to lost uncles and fathers, or for the surviving men who flew them. One customer, an historian, uses them as visual aids when he teaches about the air war in Europe. The models I made were not super detailed for contests, but my customers were very satisfied. I am hoping that Revell will bring back a new edition of the 1/48 B-24 with engraved pannel lines and some photoetced parts. At 1/72 scale, B-17 F's and B-24 are still available from other mfgs. throught Squadeon and M-expo. Regards David L. Miller Macomb, IL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Colin Ritchie Subject: Thanks Many, many thanks for the comprehensive and lucid accounts of the origin of the name Essex. It was a real education, and I guess it means I now have to a really decent job on my USS Essex, (hanger deck sides glued in place last night) Colin Ritchie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Adrian Webster Subject: Carley Floats? Evenin' all. Doesn't seem as if I was too successful with this query last time. But as I'm a determined bugger, I'll try again! Can anyone help me with some Carley Float confusion. I'm currently working on a couple of Airfix 'oldies'; the Ark Royal and Belfast. Comparing the Carley Floats supplied with each, I'm suprised at the difference in size. Obviously they were manufactured in different sizes to suit the various classes of vessels on which they were used, but are those supplied with the Ark Royal really that large in comparison to the Belfast's? Can anyone tell me how many different sizes of Carley Floats were manufactured? Hoping with your assistance to dispel my ignorance, Adrian Webster Bendigo Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Adrian Webster Subject: Profile Morskie Number 5 HMS Warspite Greetings, Can anyone assist with my attempts to locate a copy of the AJ Press Profile Morskie Number 5 HMS Warspite. I've had no joy either on the 'net, or phoning around. Ideally I'm after a copy located in Australia, but am willing to purchase overseas if need be. Thanks in advance, Adrian Webster Bendigo Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Chris and Kayo Amano-Langtree" Subject: Semtex A small addition to WRPRESS excellent post. Semtex came in several colours. Dark green was the most disliked as it was difficult to clean but Semtex with added woodchip was popular for some reason. Also used were light brown (internal only on JKNs) and grey. When are WEM shipping Vol 4? Chris Amano-Langtree ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Fred Bustard Subject: HMCS Quebec >> I need help identifying two structures on HMCS Quebec. On the foc'sle deck, aft of the hanger but just above the bows of the 27' whalers below the foc'sle deck is a round, raised platform. One port and one stbd. What were they for and what was on top of them? Also foward of these platforms are what appear to be 40mm single Bofors? Is that what they were? << I checked the drawing I have and as close as I can tell the two round objects were added after the catapult system was removed. One drawing indicates they extended above the whalers bows but are not identified, close inspection of any photos (not the best) show the top as a tub. An extension may have been added to the round catapult platforms for additinal guns?? The gun mounts forward of the whalers, a later addition, are quar 40s. I can send you the info I have if desired. Fred From the Crowsnest ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Stephen Bolton" Subject: Looking for info on the Glorious Hi All I'm looking for some help on info for HMS Glorious, the carrier sunk by Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. I want to build a 1/128 scale model of her as in the 1930's up until the time of her demise. I was wondering if anyone has any good plans or photographs showing port and starboard views. The info I have is very limited so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Steve B ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: enrico_villa Subject: S. Francisco hobby shops etc Hi all, I will be in S. Francisco for a couple of days at the end of August: could anyone suggest good hobby shops (looking especially for Japanese ship kits and/or second hand/out of production stuff) and other interesting ship-related things to see? Thanks a lot and happy modeling! Enrico ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: AAA Hobby Supply Subject: 2005 Atlanta SMMLieCon With the awarding of the IPMS 2005 US National Convention to Atlanta, I would like to be the first to invite all the SMMLies to Atlanta. As Vendor Coordinator it will be my job to sell tables in the vendor rooms. I want you all to know that I have some interesting plans for the room, including a "Ship Section" with all the ship vendors in close proximity to each other for our shopping ease. Of course, this means that certain people have to remember their manners and "play nice" but I think it'll work. I would also like to propose SMMLieCon 2005 to be held in conjunction with IPMS 2005. We will be havign a large number of chapter/group/SIG tables available for a highly reduced rate (no selling tolerated!!!) in the vendor room. I would like to offer one of these to SMML (I will pay for it) for a club table.
