However, it IS worn at sea when a ship is "dressed overall at sea",when the correct outfit is jack, White Ensign at the foremast and another White Ensign at the ensign staff. The Admiralty Manual of Navigation Volume I gives the rules for wearing the White Ensign as "All HM ships in commission wear the White Ensign. It is worn at the ensign staff when in harbour; it is also worn at the ensign staff at sea whenever possible, but in bad weather, or when cleared for action, or during war it is worn at the peak of the gaff on the mainmast, or on a suitable staff mounted in the after part of the ship. In action, ships wear at least two ensigns in a conspicuous position". A study of photographs will show many RN ships wearing the White Ensign at the gaff in peacetime. All RN ships in commission fly a commissioning or masthead pendant. This is hoisted the day the ship commissions and is never struck until the day the ship pays off. The only exception to this is when a royal standard or naval distinguishing flag is worn which then replaces the commissioning pendant. Help!!!!! John Heasel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: John Currie Subject: Ensigns and jacks Lets get the Royal Navy sorted, Once the Last Rope/Wire attaching the Ship to the Jetty is cast off the Jack comes down, when the first rope/wire is attached to the Jetty the Jack goes up. Routine in Alongside in UK, Colours Summertime 0800, Wintertime 0900, Jack and Ensign hoisted. True sunset Jack and Ensign are Hauled down and lights go on, this happens until 2100, if sunset happens after 2100 Jack and Ensign come down at 2100, this is know as Evening Colours, Lights go on at true sunset. On leaving harbour, once clear of the harbour and all ceremonial is complete the Ensign is normally transferred to the Sea Position(Gaff) At Anchor it is basicall the same as in harbour, Once the Anchor is Dropped the Jack goes up, once the Anchor is clear of the water the Jack comes down. During the hours of 2100(Evening Colours) and true Sunset and Sunrise and 5 mins to Colours(0800 or 0900) if a warship is due to pass you Cermonial is required, therefore an Ensign is raised by the duty Communicator, this is known as the Night Ensign. Hope this clears a few things. I removed all the deck fitting, barbettes, etc, glued the hul sections together to make one long piece, and then laminated the whole deck with Evergreen styrene #2025 V groove sheet. You will have to use 2 sheets and carefully fill and rescribe the seam, unless Evergreen has brought out their new 24inch lengths. Hope this helps Ken LeClair ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Ernst-Bernhard Kayser Subject: Kriegsmarine minesweeping winch Experts for Kriegsmarine minesweepers wanted! I am in the process of building a model of Kriegsmarine minesweeper type M40. The kit supplied main winch doesn't look very convincing. Who knows where to look for helpful pictures or plans for such a winch? (In a pinch, reference for minesweeping winches from other Kriegsmarine minesweepers, such as types M35 or M42, would also be welcome.) Thanks Bernhard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Ernst-Bernhard Kayser Subject: Kriegsmarine minesweeper gizmo Experts for Kriegsmarine minesweepers wanted again! Looking at photographs of Kriegsmarine minesweepers and escorts (Flottenbegleiter) I noticed that all of them seem to have a weird gizmo in the mast. The gizmo is a square frame of maybe 4 to 6 feet width. Sometime the square "sits" on one of its sides and sometimes it "stands" on one of the corners - like diamond, the playing card symbol. From the square, a short (1 to 2 feet) slat protrudes at 45 degrees, either upwards or downwards. Thus, the gizmo slightly resembles a very angular letter "Q", sometimes mirrored or upside down. The gizmo is fixed to the mast above the crow's nest and is visible especially from fore and aft. I also found two instances where a symbol looking just like the gizmo was painted on the bridge wing of a type M35 minesweepers. What is the name of the gizmo? What was it good for? (HF/DF antenna, semaphore, fighting light, tactical symbol????) Is it specific for vessels with minesweeping duties? Whoever knows the answers please respond. Thanks Bernhard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "robert patmore" Subject: green Indiana If you have a copy or can get one take a look at Walkowiak's book United States Navy Camouflage of the WW2 Era. Page 16 shows the Indiana at Newport News on August 15, 1942 that could be painted in navy green, ocean green, and haze green. Deck green would be on horizontal surfaces. The picture shows vertical surfaces in a wavy pattern smilar to some British schemes. The author states "COULD BE" but states there were a number of eye witness accounts of a South Dakota class battleship painted in a green pattern. Maybe I missed a message somewhere, but does anyone (hint: John or Al) have any status/outlook/dreams and visions on the release of Allied Coastal Forces Volume 3? Voting is VERY easy and quick. I don't care who or what you vote for, just VOTE. From what I understand we are o-so-close to getting the legal number of votes to make the Constitutional Amendments ballot legal. If you have yet to vote and are an IPMS/USA member, please VOTE! And of course if you want a ship modeler as President, I'll take it. My platform for President is at the IPMS/USA web site if you wish to read it. Criteria is simple: Any destroyer, destroyer escort, or escort destroyer is eligible in 1/350 or 1/700 scale. Full hull or waterline, but stand-alone (no dioramas). Any vessel that saw service in WW2 is eligible. This allows for pre-war and post war configurations as well. In addition to the group competing at the IPMS Nationals in 2004, we'll also be holding an 'internal' competition for kits, books and PE sets. We've got 7 modelers with 16 ships signed on so far. For more information, head over to www.modelwarships.com and click on the '04 Nats Build' button on the toolbar.
