However, I was able to view a very good series of photos in the National Maritime Museum which showed that the division was not due to shadows. The bottom colour was pristine whilst the top colour was very worn and chipped. This is why I questioned whether she was ever intentionally in camouflage rather that she was undergoing a repaint when she was called back into service Christopher Amano-Langtree ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: WRPRESSINC Subject: Re: Ark Rayal Colours To further explain; Several years ago I was sent a photo of Ark Royal, a port broadside view, taken at sea and underway with a variety of planes on the deck. It shows, without any doubt, a dark grey lower hull, a light grey upper hull and the entire Island in dark grey. The data that came with the photo suggested a late 1940 time frame. From the above, artwork and caption was produced and included in Volume One of the Camouflage series. Normally I would not have included something like this, but as the ship was famous and the scheme was new to me and I believed to many others, I decided in favour of inclusion. A gentleman who saw the artwork in Vol One contacted me privately for more information. The only thing that I could do was to send him a copy of the photo, which I did. After just now going through my files, I find that the person was one Ian Gazeley of the UK. Upon examination of the photo, he stated that as far as he could make out, the aircraft types on deck suggested not a 1940 time frame but a 1941 period. Mr Gazeley I believe is knowledgeable on Fleet Air Arm aircraft tyes and dispositiions and If he could come forward on this matter I would be grateful, if not, then somehow I will make the photo available to a wider number of people. This book has several glossy photographs of Ark Royal, including close ups of her sinking which I believe show that she not only was in a two tone scheme at the time of her loss but, that Chris Langtree is correct in stating that the painting had been interupted because, you can see streaks of her original underlying paint scheme showing through both the lighter upper hull and and darker lower hull. Given the bombing the already damaged Illustrious was subjected to while in Grand Harbour, Malta on January 23, 1941, it seems hardly surprising that a priority target the size of Ark Royal wasn't able to stay at anchor long enough to have two or more proper coats of the two colour scheme painted on her hull. (Certainly, RN destroyers which stayed to long in drydock in Malta payed a heavy price.) In the event that you cannot find Paul Kemp's book, then pay a visit to the Imperial War Museum and look up the following 1941 Ark Royal photographs: (IWM A.6334), (IWM A.7172) and especially the portside closeup photo (IWM A.6332). Good luck on your Ark Royal research. Regards, Miles F. McLaughlin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: RN ship colors/Kits for sale Hi Michael, >> In WW 1 ships of the Grand Fleet were painted dark grey at the start of the war but this was changed to light grey to make them less visible in the misty conditions of the North Sea. When did this occur and was the light grey the same as AP 507C used in WW 2; also was the earlier dark grey the same as AP 507A? Pre WW 2 the Mediterranean Fleet used a very light grey. Is there a Humbrol or Colourcoats equivalent? << I'll defer to Alan for a definitive answer on the first question, but think you'd be pretty safe with 507A and 507C. As for the second, the prewar Med light grey was AP 507C (Colourcoats RN03). Hi Anthony, >> I have some 1/700 Knox class frigate the USS Robert E. Peary (FF-1073) for sale at $14 each. Made by AFV Club waterline. Very detailed kit. It's the only Knox class in the market. << No it's not.... Cheers, John Snyder White Ensign Models http://whiteensignmodels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Raven0222 Subject: Hospital Ships Deck color and below waterline color of USAHS Hospital ships of WW II please. Thanks Raven ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: maeisen Subject: RN Camo Vol IV All: Appropo Bruno Gire's comments about the WR Press Royal Navy Camouflage series, I also just received Vol. IV, which is another great piece of work and a fitting conclusion to the series--as I understand that this will unfortunately be the last volume in the lot. What do you think it would take to get WR Press to do just one more volume--a miscellaneous volume--with some of the ships that slipped through between the cracks (such as the Tribal class destroyers Matabele and Ashanti in 1941, and HMS Victorious in '42-43 to name just a few...though there ain't too many!). Regards, Mike E. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "chris" Subject: In need of Tamiya New Jersey instructions Hi All, I am in need of a set of instructions for the Tamiya 1/350 New Jersey kit. Can anyone help me out? Photocopy is all I need. Thanks! Chris Evenden Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: andrew jones Subject: Carpathia Curious to know if there is any kits out there of the Carpathia or the Californian, as i'm reading the transcript's of the 1912 senate investigation if the Titanic sinking & was just curios to know if there is any kits for these 2 ships, but mainly the Carpathia regards Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: andrew jones Subject: another Titanic related topic I know revell or someone has released a research vessel..i seem to recall that someone did the research ship that found the Titanic....anyone recall who made it??? & if its still available?..or is the research ship I have seen the same one that found the Titanic Thanks in advance Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Phil Gollin" Subject: Coastal Forces - Part III Further to John Lambert stating that Volume 3 of the Allied Coastal Forces book will contain all the outstanding weapons, may I ask whether it will contain the 2" flare rocket mounting ("specially designed for coastal forces") and drawings of the rockets (including the "window" anti-radar head) or has this already been illustrated in the first two volumes and I've missed it/them? Thanks, Phil Gollin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Friedrich Kappes Subject: Re: New Schnellboote books Maybe with these new books, somebody can tell me which S boat is shown here??? Any suggestions? No one has commented yet on the IPMS/USA nationals. It was the smallest show since the Santa Clara show in terms of attendance and number of models (approximately 500 contestants entering about 1500 models). However, do not consider that a slight. The show was well sited, well organized and well run. Oklahoma City was a much nicer city than I had given it credit for. The convention hotels were across the street from the show site and one or two blocks away from the entertainment district. There were even fireworks shows on the 3d and 4th of July. The weather was great, 90 degrees with nice breezes. The citizens were universally friendly. The OK City group did a great job. While the model count was down, the quality was quite good. I though ships were very well represented; I didn't count them, but I would guess at least 100 were on the tables. The quality of the ship models was the best of any of the nationals I have attended. The 1/400 and larger catagory was the toughest in which I have ever competed. I was proud to have lost to Kelly Quirk's Hornet and Missouri and Rodney Meade's USS Mead (had the best rigging I have ever seen). Other amazing models were: Adrian Davies' HMS Warspite, winning the 1/401 and smaller BB and CV catagory; the two early Russian cruisers Rossiya and Monomahk by Vladmir Yakubov that took first and second in 1/401 and smaller CA, DD and all other catagory. Don Hinton's German Manned Torpedo took first in the large sub catagory. Ed Gruene had some nice entries and took an award with his USS Thornton. I also took a couple of awards with my SC717 and USS Gato. I had a great time meeting with many of the Listmates that made the trip, Hugh Lottie, Ed Gruene, Mike Quan, James Corley, Jim Johnson and many others. Thanks, guys. Beer all around for the OK City sponsoring club.
