Since you have the photo number, they'll charge you an outrageous fee for a color photo reproduction. Last time I was there, I was told all their photos were farmed out to 3rd party photo shops in the area...and they're all in cahoots together, talk about a grand conspiracy. But, an email to NARA will get things started. Regards, Jeff Herne Modelwarships.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Mike Potter Subject: Re: USS Halsey (CG-23) photos / Navy shore vehicles A change for the CG 16 class in 1993 was that the USN removed the ASRoc launcher and the torpedo tubes. The ships retained towed acoustic decoys against torpedoes. Darren, I'd be interested in the photos you mentioned. Please copy them to potter4@att.net when you send them. Military 2 1/2-ton and 5-ton trucks were olive drab in USN service. I don't know about jeeps but would guess that they too were olive drab. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Morris D Shirley Subject: Re: 1/600 scale flattops Thank you Mr. Salmon and Mr. Woort for feedback. I forgot to ask if kits full-hull. But, since they are scaled down Heller and Tamiya kits, can assume they are? I will get both kits. Do my bit to help generate demand for aftermarket 1/600 aircraft and PE sets. Again, thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Jeffon10 Subject: Re: deck colors of WW 2 destroyers For Mr. Barnum I glad to see the question of deck colors again being raised wrt your paper Polish destroyer model. My interest in deck colors stemmed from the deck colors of a Polish paper model of a 1/200th scale HUNT III Class destroyer. The back cover of Polish paper WW 2 models also suggests green and brown decks. I trust you've seen my previous e-mails on this and I trust there will be more. Regards, Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Don Macdonald" Subject: Back at it again Hello all Been a wile since I have last been on the board. Well I wanted to let you know I am in the process of taking an old life like kit of the USS Enterprise that was given to me a few years ago as parts, I now have decide to convert it to CV 16 with her angle deck, The ship is only 34 inches long but it will make for a nice RC. if I fine a com pond when we take small trips, I plan on useing the Stock gear box and use my custom work on it as well. Been so much about flat tops I decide to get back on one thank for the incourgement ;-) Don your Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: Color Photo from National Archives >> Jeff Herne recently put up a feature on color photographs of U.S. warships in WWII on modelwarships.com that included a beautiful broadside photo of USS Buchanan in Ms. 12 mod., which I recognized as the one I saw in Sea Classics over 30 years ago and have wanted to find ever since. I think Sea Classics had it mislabeled as the Lansdowne. Anyway, thanks, Jeff! My question is, how do I obtain an 8 X 10 glossy of this photo from the National Archives? It's been a while since I've bought any photos from them and I haven't kept up with the drill. << Art, I am making another trip to the National Archives in October, so send me the Photo number and also e-mail me a JPEG image of the particular photo, as I may already have it in my own collection. Copies from US Nat. Archive vendors leave a lot to be desired, so you are better to get one thru me, besides I work much cheaper than the vendors! You know my number! Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: Re: Color Photo from National Archives Art, It depends upon the source of the original photograph. If it happens to be a print, medium format contact or, if lucky, an 8x10, the easiest and cheapest way is to use the Kodak kiosk in the Still Picture room. Total cost: $5.75. The quality of the resulting prints can be stunning. I've done 8x10 enlargements from 2-1/4 x 2-1/4 contact prints and they are wonderful, as if making a print from the original negative. Otherwise you have to use one of the 3rd party companies to make a print. Cost: and arm and a leg. I think you've stumbled upon the best reason to come and visit NARA II in College Park. Take a week and about $500-$1,000. Bury yourself in the photos, the Navy movies, the plans, the correspondence-ship's logs-war diaries. Let the wife and kids explore the rest of DC. I've also ordered photos from the US Navy Institute. If my experience was typical, don't, the quality of the photos sucked. A waste of paper and chemicals. I even had forked over the extra money to produce the internegative. Unusable. They would have done better by running the stuff to the nearest Wal Mart and used one of the Kodak machines. Doug Wilde ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "andy-vu" Subject: French Navy Uniform around 1945 Hi y'all: Do you know what the French sailors wore when they were on their ship decks? Around 1945, what was their uniform like? Did it have short sleeves or long ones? What color(s) was it? All white? All blue? Blue pants with white shirts??? Round white hats? And what did the French Navy officers wore on decks? Your input will be very appreciated, so I can paint the little P.E. fellows. Happy modeling to all! Andy Vu ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: Brass pedestals - Sydney Lyndon You can buy brass pedestals of various sizes from Hobbyco in Central Sydney. These generally come with extensions to clamp the keels of wooden sailing ships, but they work just fine with plastic kits if you saw the extensions off - I have a a pair that are about 2cm high (base to keel), which would not look out of proportion for a 1:350 carrier. Curiously, I have found that the brass finials/lamp fittings that are often talked about by US SMMLies are quite hard to come by in Oz, and in any case tend to mount my models on keel blocks. regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Phil Gollin" Subject: RN Vehicles WW2 Further to the USN vehicles post, how about RN vehicles during WW2. Were they Olive Green, "sand" or Blue (if so what shade?) Did they have white mudguards and bumpers (for black-out regulations), or were they an overall colour? AND, does anyone have any published sources for wartime dockyard photos. Apart from the Duke of York in British Battleships in WW2 it is remarkable how few views there are. I presume censorship was paramount around the ports. Thanks in advance, Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: BSteinIPMS Subject: Subchaser model To follow up on the discussion of WWII subchasers, and especially Franklyn Brown's excellent article series on subchasers currently running in the Nautical Research Journal (http://www.naut-res-guild.org), those of you interested in this class of vessel might be interested in viewing Fine Art Models' SC 1474 at: http://www.fine-art-models.com Bob Steinbrunn Stillwater, MN Nautical Research Guild ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: andrew jones Subject: Attn Sydney Siders & anyone in the surounding areas that can make it You are cordially invited to attend the APMA kit auction & swap'n'sell this coming Saturday.
