Since you have the photo number, they'll charge you an outrageous fee for a color photo reproduction. Last time I was there, I was told all their photos were farmed out to 3rd party photo shops in the area...and they're all in cahoots together, talk about a grand conspiracy. But, an email to NARA will get things started. << About a year ago I contacted the national archives for plans for the Ship of the Line Pennsylvania and talk about price shock. I think I have bought good used cars for less. I almost looks as if they are trying to stop research. I contacted a local print and copy shop and the cost to copy plans of this size was only 10% what it would cost to purchase copies from the national archives. Since then I have avoided going to the national archives for anything. I have limited my research to information available from other musieums. I do not know what is going on at the national archives but someone is making a LOT of money. Regards, Raven ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Bruno Gire" Subject: A new book about French treaty cruisers I just received my brand new copy of a new book on the first two french heavy cruisers of the Washington treaty era : Duquesne and Tourville. The book is written by Gerard Garier and Patrick du Cheyron. It is a considerably expanded version of Mr Garier's first work published in Poland (and in polish) by "Warship of the World" The polish edition included 60 pages and a lot of photos. The new book comprises191 pages and plenty of additionnal pictures, plus a set of twelve plates with drawings, including a full set of plans (outboard and inboard) from the Navy booklet of hull plans (as built) and many shemes detailling alterations, armament, fittings. The standard of this book is, IMO, truly equivalent to that produced by Marines Edition (those monographies by Robert Dumas, Jean Moulin and others) A very exciting book. Monographies on french naval ships are so rare... Text very detailled, (in french, sorry....) I obtained it from Lela Presse, a french publisher, at: http://www.avionsbateaux.com/ Bruno Gire Bordeaux, France ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: Color Photo from National Archives >> I've also ordered photos from the US Navy Institute. If my experience was typical, don't, the quality of the photos sucked. A waste of paper and chemicals. I even had forked over the extra money to produce the internegative. Unusable. They would have done better by running the stuff to the nearest Wal Mart and used one of the Kodak machines. << Same here. I chewed them out for doing such a piss-poor job. Told them they were a bunch of lazy hacks. They did not even take the time to flatten the photo out before they made the copy! In two words, They Suck! Using the vendors from the US National Archives is almost as bad and will cost twice as much. The vendors at the US Naval Historical Center on the other hand were great. Did a good job and got it to me fast. A little pricey, but satisfied after dealing with the other two losers. Really, you need to go there and use the Kodak machine in the still photo room at the Nat. Archives. It is good. The best way is to take your own lap top computer and a scanner. Photos are free that way and man are there a lot of them. Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Robert Salmon" Subject: Re: 1/600 scale flattops >> Thank you Mr. Salmon and Mr. Woort for feedback. I forgot to ask if kits full-hull. But, since they are scaled down Heller and Tamiya kits, can assume they are? << I'm glad I could help Mr. Shirley. The Kangnam Enterprise is indeed a full hull kit. With some PE and better aircraft, I think it would be an attractive build. Thanks, Robert Salmon Norman, OK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "bert" Subject: Re: R.N. vehicles ww 2 From bert to phil, R.N. vehicles were navy blue akin to B5 or G5,they had a white edge to the front mudguards about 3inches wide. it went across the front of the guards and along the radius edge to the footboard it was the same for the rear mudguards as well. the vehicle number was on a plate in the usual positions. the number was always preceeded by the letters R.N. some vehicles also had the letters R.N. on the cab door sides. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: potter4 Subject: Tom's Modelworks USN Radar PE Set 1/700 Has anyone a list of radar antennas in Tom's Modelworks US Naval Radar PE Set #706?
