We have often talked here about how Battleship books sell better than others because they are "Sexy". So too are some areas of Government. NARA which The National Archives and Records Administration, So IT IS THE US NATIONAL ARCHIVES, is one of those agencies that IS NOT considered "Sexy" by the Government. At one time I used to work, not for NARA, but in a Presidential Library which was administered by NARA. They are one of the first places to take hits in Budget cutbacks. In the time I worked there (2 years) I saw an already Small staff reduced by 15% and not replaced. The only time a NARA budget becomes of interest to anyone in Government is when a President starts to plan his own Presidential Library, then he wants NARA to get some money. (Presidential Libraries are built through Private donation and then given to NARA to administer.)The number of requests NEVER decreases to match the smaller staff. Dennis when you contacted the local shops, were they local to you or to Washington, where they really know how to screw the federal Government? The money NARA on their copies, goes to pay for what the Federal Government will not fund. Be nice, trust me, the ones I knew worked very hard for poor pay, and went out of their way to help when they could. If you think it's hard to get a picture from them, you should see the hoops they have to go through to get something completely meaningless de-classified so some schmuk can say I waited "for this?? There nothing useable here, I want my money back!!!" We just got phone service back on Tuesday in the old place and won't get new service in the new place till 9/16. No phones also translate to no email service too. I would appreciate hearing comments about the so-called bell bottom trousers of the U.S. Navy enlisted men's woolen uniform. Why the flared (bell bottom) legs? When did they become the official item of clothing? I remember hearing (a long LONG time ago) that the flared leg made it easier to slip out of them if a sailor were to fall overboard, and thus quickly be rid of the heavy wool water-soaked trousers that might impede swimming. If that were true, then why were the chiefs' and the officers' uniforms not so designed? And why are the blouses so tight (making it sometimes a two-man job to get out of them under the best of conditions)? Opinions, SMML? Best Regards Detlef ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Phil Gollin" Subject: RN Vehicles and 1/600th Aircraft Carrier Thanks to Bert for the info on WW2 RN vehicles. - (Any more info - or references to photos would be welcome) Further to the thread on 1/600th Aircraft Carriers, Skytrex have announced a 1/600th white metal waterline HMS Attacker Escort Carrier (£30) in their "Coastal Forces" range of wargames models. I don't know if it's been released yet. In 1/600th, they also do a Black Swan Sloop (Hooray), J/K/N-class destroyer, HMS Sheffield, HMS Warspite, etc&& (I have some of their 1/350th Black Swan Sloops and they are quite good - but need Photo-etch to look really nice) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Peter@shipmodels Subject: Re: 1/600 scale Flat Tops Hi Everyone, Sorry for coming in on this thread a bit late, but things have been a bit busy just of late. If anyone is interested, I have been working on a set of modern USN aircraft in 1/600 scale, specifically for the Kangnam USS Enterprise and Heller/Airfix Forrestal. So far I have completed the patterns for the A6 Intruder, F14 Tomcat, A7 Corsair and F18 Hornet the others that should follow soon are F4 Phantom, E2C Hawkeye, S3 Viking, A4 Skyhawk and SH3 Seaking. I will send them in to be cast, probably in white metal for general release. These will appear on my own Atlantic models label as will the 1/600 USN Aircraft Carrier Photo Etched detail set, because of the very limited interest, and will contain lots of necessary parts for the Enterprise and Forrestal kits. I will keep anyone who is interested, posted on progress.
