I am getting back into ship modeling after being out of it for 20 years. I will probably have more questions for y'all. About the "Cracker Jack" uniforms: I served in the Seabees from ' 77 thru ' 82. Believe it or not even this constructionman preferred bell bottoms. I liked looking like a "swabbie" better than being taken for a bus driver or ice-cream man. The layout of the supporting structure of the flighteck is still a mystery for me and I am looking for plans or photos of the layout of this structure for the long hull Essex carriers. << Hi Roger, I have some shots of Mike Ploeger's 1/96 scale Shangri-LA (CV-38) under construction on my website: http://wmunderway.8m.com/gallery19/gallery19.htm http://wmunderway.8m.com/gallery10/gallery10.htm Hope this helps a bit! V1 60's-70's, V2 70-80's V3 80's to now perhaps or was it just there were different styles of tractor in operation..as i would hate to do a current plane being towed by a tractor from the 60's or vice versa .... regards Andrew Jones Oz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: LHDockyard Subject: Re: Flightdeck supporting structure of ESSEX-Class carriers >> I am building a 1/96 model of CV-47 USS PHILIPPINE SEA and asked this question several months ago. The layout of the supporting structure of the flighteck is still a mystery for me and I am looking for plans or photos of the layout of this structure for the long hull Essex carriers. I have all available plans from Floating Drydock and the Anatomy of the Ship book of the ESSEX Class. I also had the question in many several forums and made an internet research. No result! The way to US national archives is a little bit to long for me. << Roger: A business associate of mine is currently researching this class as supporting documentation for his build of the Hancock in 1/96 scale. At the moment he is in Annapolis taking pictures of a number of models there. When he returns we will be able to make the photos and any other information he was able to obtain available. We should have the basics of this effort sorted out by the middle of next month. Please feel free to check in with us then as to the status of this information. I hope we will be able to provide the information you are looking for. Zumwalt. During his watch, he sent out so many orders and directives and counter-orders that they were called "Z-grams" and "Zumwalt's snowflakes". << And don't forget, Adm. Zumwalt also gave us longer hair and beards, something that definitely set sailors apart from the other services. I was stationed at Ft. Eustis with 2 other sailors for six weeks, and my beard made me the center of attention. Not always a good thing, I might add. Mike Settle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Ron Subject: dress blues >> (1) Spit shined shoes, regulation not Corfams, totally shined not just the toes. A good spit shine lasts forever if maintained and avoids the phony look of Corfams. Officers wear Corfams. << I beg to differ here, my dad retired as a USNR Captain in 1990 after 33 years, 11 active the rest reserve and he never wore a single pair of Corfams. His dress white shoes were spotless flat white and his dress blue shoes were spit shined black. I should know since I polished them many times as a kid to earn money for models. Most officers I knew through dad disdained Corfams. My great uncle was a retired Colonel USA and never wore the things neither did my uncle the USMC pilot or his brother the USMC Major (grunt type). They are all of the opinion that Corfams are for very junior officers and suckups. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: Flightdeck supporting structure of ESSEX-Class carriers Roger, One short cut for you may be to purchase the USS Yorktown CV-10 kit in 1/350 from Trumpeter Models of China and use this as a visual guide. This kit must be available in Switzerland or Germany. Funnily enough I had bought a copy of Alan Ravens Vol 1 from Sandle and put it away. It didn't have what I was looking for at the time. Now I'm glad I bought it. Also found that website you were talking about and got some good pictures and artwork. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Best Wishes Stephen Varhegyi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: "Bell bottom trousers, buttons made of brass...wide around the ankles, tight around the *ss..." Hi Doug, I served during those same years, 1966-70, all aboard USS BAINBRIDGE. What was your duty station? >> BTW, my standard-issue dress blue bell bottoms had 14 buttons - the waistband had two and the other twelve were spaced around the flap. << Yep, mine are the same, except of course that on 13 show when they're buttoned up, so they're still known as 13-button trousers. BTW, I can still wear my dress blues and dress whites.... The plans are from the RC combat world, and I want to verify their accuracy. Does anyone know of a source for "accurate" plans for this boat? I have posted on J-aircraft in the ship message board and so far no luck. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.
