On the Hull there are lot of small half looking balls on the hull, are all these on the real ship and as many and how many of them am I going to half to off to make it look right? Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Jeff Herne, Director, NJAHOF" Subject: Pier Books Dave Roach, owner of Pier Books, is a fellow NJ Ship Model Society club member and a good friend. He carries strictly nautical books, but tends to be more focused on sailing ships than iron-hulled warships. Order from him with confidence. He's great to deal with. Or do what I did and make it yourself. it's not hard at all, just abit time consuming. Good luck!! Once again, Squadron/Signal repeats its annoying habit of trying to equate WW2 USN colors to the present FS system, and they just don't correlate. Could somebody please come in on this, as I have not seen the model myself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "David L. Miller" Subject: Gar wood >> I am trying to help some one with something I am not use of working with may be one you have done this in the pass. I am trying to help a person that is building a RC model of a Gar wood speedster boat. Here is some of the questions he is asking. He is asking what is the best way to stane it? << If he is covering it with mahogany, he will not need to stain it. If he has other woods such as basswood or pine, use a preconditioner and then a gell stain of desired color. >> What to use in sealing it? << RC hulls should be fiberglassed. Use a light weight cloth and clear resin. The cloth "disappears" and the mahogany shines through! Use resin on the inside of the hull as well. This adds strength and keeps hull watertight. Tower Hobby sells fiberglassing material for RC airplanes and this stuff works great on boats, too. I have also used automotive fiberglassing products. Remember to use a light weight, woven cloth, not matting. >> What to use in keeping its high gloss finish. << Well done fiberglass job will be very glossy and attractive. The fiberglass may need a final sanding and polishing to remove waves and imperfections. I use Boat Wax, or a good paste wax for shine on my RC sailboat. David L. Miller Macomb, IL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Fkbrown90@ Subject: Re: Mahogany runabouts To: Don McDonald. I'm sure you will get some good suggestions about the Gar Wood boat. Here are a couple you might want to consider. I assume the hull will be fine mahogany planking. The decking on these boats were often caulked with white caulking compound between the darker mahogany deck planks, making for a striking effect. Model railroad shops should have some white plastic strips which could be used between the mahogany planks. Refer to photos of Gar Wood and/or Chris Craft boats to get a sense of the proportions, etc. Try gently scraping, instead of wet sanding, between coats of varnish. Try it on a test piece first, to get the hang of it. This is a cabinet makers trick. Use only the best fittings. People associate these magnificent mahogany runabouts with the best of everything. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Gar wood speedster From: "Don Macdonald" >> He is asking what is the best way to stane it? << Use a good quality wood stain like minwax. I would probably avoid water based stains and finishes. Basic rule, treat it like a piece of furniture not a model and finish it like you would finish furniture. >> What to use in sealing it? << Shellac over the raw stained wood thinned to a 2-3 lb cut (mix out of can shellac 1:1 or 1:2 with denatured alcohol) then sand very lightly with a very fine grit paper like 400-600 then several coats of a good waterproof finish like spar varnish or an outdoor varnish sanding lightly between coats. An alternative would be a clear epoxy marine finish. >> What to use in keeping its high gloss finish. << then the final coat should be rubbed out with fine auto body rubbing compound to a gloss or medium gloss finish >> We are not all that sure on what to use or how to do it. << Get a book on furniture finishing Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: USS Hornet Hangerbay >> Done anyone know where I can get photo etching for the inside of hornets hangerbay.
