On the Hull there are lot of small half looking balls on the hull, are all these on the real ship and as many and how many of them am I going to half to off to make it look right? << Those funny-looking bars and bumps are on the real ships. I believe the 'dots' are pad-eyes for working on the hull, and the 'bars' are part of the air-bubbling system designed to reduce/mask the engine room noise and screw signature. The screws themselves have internal channels that air is pumped through, creating a wall of millions of bubbles around the screws. Based on the photo in Warship, the scheme looks to me to be the 1942 Admiralty Light Disruptive Type, and I'd guess the colors to be MS1, MS3, and MS4a (or possibly AP 507C). Alan?? Burke kit just diff. decals. BUTTT!!! the decals do not have the numbers for the Cole and a few other ships that it has the names for the fantail. Nice kit but they weren't careful on the the decals. That's a real minus. The Captain Naval Base Hobbies www.totalnavy.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: Paint References (John Snyder) Dear John, I just wanted to explain where I was coming from when mentioning the paint references in Squadron/Signals US Landing Craft Book. When I expressed pleasure that they were there, I was actually refering to the fact that they explain the 'Measure' system so beloved of the US Navy. Too many books will say that a particular vessel is in Measure 33 (or whatever) without saying which colours constitute that scheme. US Navy vessels are not my particular bag, so when a subject like this comes up it is useful not to have to get a second reference to explain the first. I don't think any of the discerning readers who use this list would actually use the FS reference scheme and so it was unimportant to mention that specifically. At least with this book to help I can have an informed conversation with you about which colours I need next time I'm on to place an order at WEM. And another thing. What are the chances of getting to see some of your produce close up? It seems an age since I heard any publicity about WEM attending any shows in the south-east of the UK. I like to prod things before I buy! Best wishes Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Michael McMurtrey Subject: USS Maddox (DD-731) I just learned that a cousin of mine served on this ship (one of the destroyers involved in the infamous Tonkin Gulf Incident) and would like to build a model of it for him. Are there any kits available in 1/350 or 1/700? It was a Sumner class destroyer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "William H. Shuey" Subject: Re: WEM 1/400 Kriegsmarine Anti-Aircraft weapons Are there any plans to release this set in 1/350?? That would be a considerable boon to builders of the Bismarck/Tirpitz kits from what I have seen of them. Bill Shuey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: EDWARD GRUNE Subject: Panda Flight IIA kit (was USS Cole Kit) Rusty White wrote: >> I haven't been keeping up with the latest Panda releases as of late and I was wondering if they ever released a FLT2-A version of the Burke class. I have the FLT1/2 detail set at the photo etchers and I would like to begin design on the FLT2A if a kit is available. << Hi Rusty There are some photos of the test shot by Panda on the SteelNavy website. See them at: http://steelnavy.com/PandaChurchillPreBean.htm It is not out yet. From comments that were posted in response to the photos, there are some significant shortcomings in the kit - and no one is sure if they will be fixed. The most glaring error is the failure to modify the aft face of the bridge to elevate the Aegis antennas to provide a clear view of the horizon over the raised hangar. They replaced the aft deck piece with a replacement hangar and provided a RAM launcher, but appears that they did little else to make a true Flight IIA representation. I guess it will just have to be called a Flight IIA (minus). Question for the list-does anyone read and translate Japanese? I purchased a wooden "boat" model years ago and would like some information on it. It is a very Japanese boat, not just a Japanese kit of a Western boat. (It is not a ship, but rather a boat) Also, I would like to have some model ship data publications (from Japan) translated - at least a little! The big news is I am willing to pay and or trade as necessary for compensation. If anyone can help me with one or both of these projects, I can e-mail the pages to you, so contact me off list. Thanks to all! It is the outlet of my modeling efforts in 1/600 scale. I will only build the ships which are not avalable by the other manufacturers like PT Dockyard or Skytrex. This means that bias will be laid on the bigger ships which can be used as targets for our MTB, PT and E boats. Or you can fight it out between the big ships if you have the space first ship is a German light cruiser which is avalable from now on. For other ships in the pipeline look at http://thomasriepe.gmx.de the homwe of the 1/600 shipyard. I am allways open for suggestions so if you need a certain ship tell me!!! I ll see what is possible Thomas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
