On those that I have looked at in respect of the artwork there are many errors. At first glance things look very good but as one goes deeper more and more errors crop up. I understand that this applies also to ships of the German Navy, according to posts from others in the past. << What about the information coming from Eastern Europe on Japanese ships? Much of this material seem to be new compared to material normally seen in the US. Since there is less 'western-source' material to compare, it would be distressing if we discovered that the 'new' information we are seeing suffers similar accuracy problems. Brooks A Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Michael McMurtrey Subject: USS Maddox To: raisingirl Thanks for the info on Maddox. I learned that she had never received the FRAM conversion shortly after posting my original inquiry. My cousin, who served on the ship, left the USN about a year before the (in)famous Tonkin Gulf Incident. Do you have details of the changes from her WW II configuration ("her 40 m/m guns were replaced by 3" mounts, and her pole mast was replaced with a tripod") that you mentioned? If so, you can reply off-list (podium[at]lkkytbs.org) if you like. And what are you doing on this list? I thought you were an airliner modeler! :-) (that & an an Airliner Author as well ;-). Naturally, I intend to do the artwork etc. myself. Any help and guidance will be very greatfully received. Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: NeilTaylor54 Subject: Re: Hood & Allan Plumb I have researched the Glorious and have laid in a Repluse for the conversion. I have reduced the drawings from RA Burts Battleships of WW1 to 1:600 scale and have amassed as many photos as possible But if you have already completed the conversion any tips? I am also going to try a similar conversion to the Furious as completed has anyone out there attempted it? Neil Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: S-BOOT QUESTION >> There was a small door just to the left of the torpedo aiming console, which apparently led down to the wheelhouse. Also, there was another door on the aft side of the cockpit that led to the radio room. Voice tubes were used to send commands below to both wheelhouse and engine rooms. Hope this is of help. << Karl, Do you still have these photos of the S-boat bridge area? If so, I sure would like to get a copy of each. Please e-mail me directly @ stevewiper@aol.com Thanks, Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: The tops of bell bottoms Well, SMML thrashed out the "bottom" of bell bottom trousers fairly well, with a few references to the tops thereof. Which leads me to solicit comments about the reasons for (and reactions to) the odd design of the tops, the forward facing flap, the 13 (or is it 14) buttons (in this day of Velcro, or zippers). I heard that the 13 buttons "honored" (?) the 13 original states which became the nucleus of the U.S.A. Do "tailor mades" have the buttons? How say ye, SMML? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Loren Perry Subject: Re: Panda USS Cole ----- Decals >> Thanks yes I'm aware of GMM350-1d BUTT!! His decals set is of the Hi-Viz nature the Navy switched several years ago to the Lo-Viz numerals which for the state-of-the-art builder would rather have what's on the ships now. Dear Loren, I would suggest you could make a Lo-Viz set too for more modern ships you could change the black shadow to a greyish. Then I could offer more of your great decal sets. << As I understand it, the real ships' crews spray paint a light dust coat of Haze Gray over their hull numbers to mute the colors. Modelers can duplicate this with an airbrush by misting a light dusting of Haze Gray over the decals after they have been applied. I live in south carolina, and by god it's you yanks that got the accent on the wrong syllable, and please don't critisize the brits, after all it's thier language. ONE OTHER THING, "ORISKANY" IS AN OLD INDIAN WORD THAT MEANS "PLEASE CHANGE THE SUBJECT" hope this helps, david in dixie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Tony Mattson" Subject: you say aluminum, I say aluminium... Kevin writes of American pronunciation: >> you Brits always put the emphasis on the wrong syllable. Which leadsto abominations such as a-LU-mi-num being pronounced AL-u-mi-ni-um. ...:-) << Last I heard, Kevin, it was the American Chemical Society who decided to move away from a hundred years of IUPAC international convention in 1925 when the ACS changed the spelling of Aluminium to Aluminum. Which led to the abomination of Al-u-mi-ni-um being pronounced as a-LU-mi-num!!! ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: David Wells Subject: Re: HMS Hood Regarding a 1941 Hood refit, "Allan Plumb" wrote: >> British Battleships of WWII (Raven & Roberts) has quite a bit on different options. That described in Breyer is only one of several. Is there something particular you wanted to know about (so I don't have to type a lot :-) or everything? My guess would be KGV-type superstructure and secondary armament, as far as the visible stuff goes. Sadly, the dock space and time just weren't there. Allan Plumb (who keeps mulling smashing a Hood and KGV together someday, right after cutting down Repulse as HMS Glorious) << I actually began such a project, but I ran into a snag pretty quickly. The Hood was much narrower than the KGV, and so much of the superstructure won't fit correctly. The bridge and forward superstructure might work, but as start working on the midship section, width becomes a problem. It's difficult to get the 5.25" guns to fit with any sort of superstructure between. I've noticed that neither Breyer nor Raven & Roberts show a deck plan for a refitted Hood, just a profile. Also check out Frank Allen's HMS Hood Association site, http://hmshood.com/. Once again, profiles but no deck plans. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. I just thought when I am doing a new modell for myself I would like to make copies of my modells for people who would like to have such a modell as well without doing all the mould making and mastermodeling. So 1/600 shipyard is a basement esteblishment one person model manufacturer based in Germany Hope this is sufficient explanation!!
