At any rate, think of it this way- the fact that detailed plans were never created and no firm plan was ever finalised, gives you the freedom of artistic license. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via e-mail (the address is on the site). Frank http://hmshood.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ralph Batykefer" Subject: Buckley Class WDE Coast Guard Conversions It is a long shot, but does anyone have information or knowledge about the Coast Guard's conversion of the Buckley class DE into the WDE (USS Vance)? I am converting a model and need information about the BOX STRUCTURE located directly aft of the stack. It almost looks like a DASH helo hanger, but I doubt seriously that it was available or placed on this class of vessel during the Korean War. Other information or contacts would be appreciated so that I can complete this model for a former sailor (who sailed on the Vance in Vietnam). The model diorama I am building will include the USS Vance in WWII as a DE, during the Korean War as a WDE (painted white), and then finally as a DER in Vietnam. Here is a link to the photos: http://65.54.244.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=1d997f1e400b052f6a1f1cb0b4f77d7b&lat=1065203427&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eussvance%2ecom%2fVance%2fdobbs%2fdobbs4%2ehtml The WDE is the white painted ship in the photos: http://65.54.244.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=40b97669ab5d5fe5e780a7efd5f63848&lat=1065203756&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eussvance%2ecom%2fVance%2fpictpag9%2ehtm If you can help I would greatly appreciate it and so would the man who served on her in Vietnam. My wife Barbara and I had a young English girl stay with us for a year to help with our two small children. Her home was in Botley, near Southampton, and she would ask me to speak slowly and distinctly for her enhanced comprehension. Ha! Even after one year neither Barb nor I could tell the difference between Samantha's "Bob" or "Bahb". Bob Steinbrunn Stillwater, MN Nautical Research Guild ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: NAVYDAZE Subject: Bell bottoms I will only speak on the subject of the question about custom made. Mine were exactly the same as regulation except they were taylored to fit me and not 1000 other guys. There were made of Gabardine which was easier to store and care for. They had the required 13 buttons but more flair on the bell bottoms and a zipper on the side of the jumper to get on and off easier. Oh and of course Liberty cuffs - a design on the inside of a cuff - I believe mine had a dragon with the words Hong Kong - I still have them somewhere. But as you stated I have only heard the story of the 13 buttons representing the first colonies - However we never buttoned all 13 - just the sides and a couple on the top - drank a lot beer and you would appreciate why we did that. Never heard anything more from them... anyone have any info? Is this project dead in the water (pardon the pun). << ICM has made these annoucements before time after time and never made any of the proposed deadlines. There have been lots of excuses given for this. If I see it on the shelf, I'll believe it then. I would suggest you adopt the same policy regarding ICM. However, compared to the FRAM modification, the ship really didn't change a whole lot. Swapping out the 40s and adding the tripod (and its new radar fit; I think Maddox got her SPS-40 antenna in a refit in late 1963 or early 1964, before that it looks like it was an SPS-6 or something similar) will take you a long way there. :) I'd recommend for comparison purposes you try to compare Maddox in her postwar rig to a wartime shot of a Sumner-class ship. There's lots of those available, such as these of her almost-immediate sister Lyman K. Swenson: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-l/dd729-b.htm >> And what are you doing on this list? I thought you were an airliner modeler! :-) (that & an an Airliner Author as well ;-). Shane) << I'm an omnivore...also been known to haunt the space-modeler's list and some of the car-modeling sites, too. The Prinz Eugen website on the S-Boots was a big help. It looks like there was a little hatch or doorway of sorts that a slim fellow could squeeze through and that voice communication was by speaking tube as several of you mention. The Revell model shows a little square within a square on the forward port face of the bridge console, which I will paint black to indicate the glass hatch to the interior below. I can see that once the skipper stepped down from the little platform in the center of the bridge well, he could make use of such a doorway. Similarly I see that there is a rectangular section abaft the platform where a doorway to the radio room could go. I don't suppose that in 1:72 scale this is all that apparent, but I'm a stickler for those finicky details. The Hood was much narrower than the KGV, and so much of the superstructure won't fit correctly. << Yes, David, but as you know from my fiddled-about Arizona which went to you, I like seeing the general look of things. When I say "smash", that's not too far from the truth. :-) I'm building a 1/350 Fletcher in 1957 fit, and have done the best I can at scratchbuilding the extra deck and deck houses, but for a what-if like Hood 1942 my standards would drop even lower than Arizona. Or hey, I've seen a 1/700 Renown out there; although I suspect 5.25" is more likely that might be a place to start. But since the Renown was resin it would cost more, and would not justify a "bash". (And HMS Lion (1942) from a KGV would take all sorts of hull slashing. But I can dream.) Naturally, I intend to do the artwork etc. myself. << Hello Roger Someone at one time posted a link to a UK model supply company that sells various-sized PE grids. I happened to bookmark the link - and just last week was looking around the site to see if there was a reason to retain it in my bookmarks. They do custom etching. The site is 4D Modelshop and the link to their etching services is: http://www.modelshop.co.uk/services/etching.htm They include the line specs and a rough price-list(prices start from ... and go from there). It looks like there may be an art set up fee in addition to the cost for the etching service. Hope this helps. Ed Grune Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Tim Stoneman Subject: 4.7" Gunned 'L' and 'M' Class Destroyers Can anybody answer some questions about these ships? First, later photos of some of them show a small square compartment attached to the starboard side of the front of the after deckhouse at main deck level Was this associated with HF/DF, which some of the class carried, with the aerial fitted on a polemast on the deckhouse - not all those with the deckhouse had the mast and aerial (unless the photos concerned had been censored?), or did it have some other purpose. Which ships had this compartment? Second, photos of LOYAL in the Clyde on completion show her in a two-coloured camouflage, with white and black bands on the funnel. Alan Raven's 'Camouflage Vol Two: Royal Navy 1942' (New York: WR Press, 2001) shows the colours as WA Blue and White, but on the ship's funnel there is a clear contrast between the white of the funnel band and the lighter of the two camouflage colours. Is this just due to fading of the camouflage white, due to the camouflage 'white' actually being off-white or because the lighter colour was not actually white at all - and if the latter, what colour was it? (Incidentally one of the photos shows that the painters got it wrong initially - starboard side had white stripe above two black ones and port had two black above one white - others show them repainted with white at the top on both sides!)
