I've attached 2 photos of RN Ton Class mine hunters camouflaged when operating during the Indonesian Crisis in the 1960s. Does anyone have any info on these colour schemes or any other used at that time? HMAS Anzac & Melbourne..but also open to the public was the Success & the HMNZ Te Mana. Also showing their "stuff" was Task Force 72, with a huge display & a catalogue of kits available, was really too tempting..oh well maybe in a year or 2 perhaps. regards Andrew Jones ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Bill Weckel Subject: Re: Unusual Ship Someone asked about the naming conventions... I recently read that MSC was naming one of their new construction the Randall Shugart and one the Gary Gordon - the two Army snipers killed in the "Black Hawk Down" operation and both posthumously awarded the MOH. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Steve.Richards Subject: Kopro Royal Oak?? Hi all, Does anyone know anything about a 1/450 HMS Royal Oak by a Czech company "Kopro". Some things I note are: The box art depicts an Italian battleship! I cannot find any reviews of the kit. Is this a re-hash of the Revell ex-FROG HMS Royal Sovereign? (In 1/500 scale) Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: ED LARYEH Subject: ESSEX camouflage USS ESSEX (CV-9) was completed in measure 21 (overall navy blue (5-N)) She was repainted in dazzle measure 32 pattern 6-10D in 1944 She reverted to measure 21 in 1945 Those are the only colors she carried during the war. Floating drydock CAMOUFLAGE VOL 2 has a diagram of the dazzle pattern. Only 2 colors used and both should be available from WEM (or other sources, especially since the dark color was simply flat black!) Flight deck markings varied slightly, and were subject to being worn away during flight ops On my model I chose to use a flat black "9" and white, rather than light grey, deck striping (dashed) Note that ESSEX carried 5 radio masts, an SK radar on the tripod, and no outboard 40mm tubs when built. Her sisters show many variations on these specific points. Lots of room to select your own specific ship, but each one can be unique. ESSEX was a short hull version and carried the original bridge with 4 40mm mounts. Since she never received the outboard 40mm tubs so she is an excellent choice for measure 32, (its easier to paint a flat surface) and the pattern is not difficult. Most of her sisters were not in dazzle when the outboard 40mm tubs were added. The instructions say to paint most of the ship navy blue. Can anyone verify what color she was painted during WWII? << The kit represents an early fit Essex Class ship but you cannot accurately build the Essex herself (she had no catapults as built). You can build most other short hull Essex Class ships in the early fit wearing Measure 21 which is 5-N Navy Blue vertical surfaces, 20-B Deck Blue for steel decks and either 20/250 or 21 flight deck stain (I'm not sure which is correct) with 20-B steel fittings on the flight deck. Go to www.steelnavy.com and look under articles for John Sheridan's breakdown of what ships were in the class, pick any short hull that wore Measure 21 other than the Essex and you're set. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Terry WongLane" Subject: Imai, Le Napoléon........... Dear SMML, I was talking to a well known, prolific and rather tall ship modelmaker who drives sports cars, the other day. I mentioned to him that I remembered seeing a large scale model of a French sail/steam 2nd rate battleship many, many years ago. I have since discovered it was the 1/150 Le Napoléon kit by Imai, but I can't find out anything else about this kit. Please, can any of you advise me of it's accuracy or availablity? I ask because it is a model of a French ships, and therefore I would like to add it to my French-themed collection. Even though it's a sailing ship, I recall it does have funnels and a propellor! Many thanks, Terry Wong ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
