There is an introduction and extensive notes by a man named James Goldrick. Can anyone tell me about Mr. Goldrick's credentials? << An internet search reveals that James Goldrick is an Aussie naval officer, and the author of a number of naval history books, including "The King's Ships Were at Sea: The War in the North Sea, August 1914 to February 1915", "Mahan Is Not Enough: The Proceedings of a Conference on the Works of Sir Julian Corbett and Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond", and "No Easy Answers: The Development of the Navies of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, 1945-1996." He just took the post of Commandant of the Australian Defense Force Academy. See http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/STAFF_SERVICES/green_sheet/msg00192.html for his bio. Pretty impressive credentials to me! If you want an unbiased view of what the heck happened at Jutland, ignore the contemporary British authors (too much face-saving). An excellent unbiased summary is in V. E. Tarrant's "Jutland: The German Perspective." There is an introduction and extensive notes by a man named James Goldrick. Can anyone tell me about Mr. Goldrick's credentials? He is quite critical of Mr. Young in a number of places. I suspect that Goldrick is writing with the benefit of many years of hindsight. I would like to be able to decide if he is criticizing Mr. Young fairly, or unfairly. << Goldrick wrote "The King's Ships Were At Sea" published by the Naval Institute Press in 1984. The book covers the war in the North Sea from August 1914 to February 1915. Goldrick refers to his history as "revisionist" but I suspect this is only because it is really the first serious exploration of the period since the 1920's, save for Arthur Marder's work It is really an operational history, and does not seem especially radical to me. In the preface to his book, however, Goldrick says that a work that is revisionist "almost inevitably becomes destructive in it's criticism." Whatever the case, it is an excellent book and I recommend it to anyone interested in WW I at sea. He is very highly qualified to comment on _With the Battlecruisers_, although not having read it I can't comment about whatever Filson Young and Captain Goldrick actually said. You are correct that he writes about WW1 from the vantage of nearly a century of hindsight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: andrew jones Subject: scratch build ships I am pondering doing a scratch built ship one day ...i have linked to the USS Monitor ..seems nice & simple (waterline of course) , but was wondering what else would be good to build, for a beginner?? well have a good weekend all regards Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "david angelo" Subject: Airfix S. S. Canberra kit I'm thinking about building an Airfix 1/600 S.S. Canberra, does anyone know if this kit is still in production? Thanks, David Angelo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: Re: With the battlecruisers Gary James Goldrick is an Australian naval historian (and, at the time he was doing much of his early writing, officer in the RAN - don't know what he is doing now) who studied the initial period of Royal Navy operations in the first world war extensively. His work on this period is covered in his book, The King's Ship's were at Sea, published by the Naval Institute Press. The book is based on extensive research on primary source material from UK archives and if James is critical of the account in 'With the Battlecruisers', then the criticism is probably well-founded. regards Stephen Allen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
