Model Contest - 19 October ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODELLERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Raven0222 Subject: Square rigging With regards to the sagging and such of the square rigger. The only thing consistent between square riggers was the inconsistency of their rigging. Even in this day of phone and FedEx, I have seen many ships pull in for repairs at Port Angeles, WA and effect those repairs with whatever is available at the salvage store. During those refits, lines are sagging, blocks are strung where ever they will rest. This disarray may last but a few hours, or many weeks..... One thing is certain. Any ship or boat at any given time will not appear as it should be.....to someone. Regards, Christian Raven ShipModelMasters.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Matthew Prager" Subject: Re: US NAVY UNIFORMS Yes, Navy "Blues" are actually black - but we still call them blues. The material changed to a ligtweight blend vice the heavy wool when crackerjacks were re-instated in the early 80's. A couple of years ago the dungaree uniform went away to be replaced by a cotton-poly blend Utility Uniform, similar to the US Coast Guard's working uniform. MNCS(SW) Matthew Prager Command Senior Chief USS CHAMPION (MCM-4) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: Hanging lines I have a copy of that poster. It came with the Los Angeles Times several weeks ago. It appears that the studio wants to emphasize the sea battles aspect of the O'Brian story, which explains the battle. There's also a lot of smoke or haze. The vessel does not appear to be the sloop Sophie, but appears to be a much larger vessel. One glaring mistake is that master and commander Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) is show wearing two epaulettes, instead of the one appropriate to his rank. Likely some studio mental midget decided the real uniform didn't look right to him or her. Ken Goldman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Robert Mosher" Subject: Re: Master and Commander This is the Russell Crowe film about Patrick O'Brian's character Jack Aubrey, Royal Navy - Napoleonic Wars period. The ship in the poster is probably HMS Rose, a reconstructed frigate I understand they used in the movie. The film plot is actually supposed to be from The Far Side of the World but the film company reportedly liked the Master and Commander title better. Supposed to be a Thanksgiving to Christmas this year timeframe for release. Robert A. Mosher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Craig Bennett" Subject: Re: LST 938, MARICOPA COUNTY Hi David Concerning the fate of USS LST -938. After checking DANFS and Friedman's book on US Amphibious ships it lists the LST-938 Maricopa County as being transferred to Vietnam renamed the Da Nang HQ-501. When Vietnam fell in 1975. One LST (ex-Cayuga County-LST -529) escaped. Now Thailand did receive 6 LST's (LST''s-294,898,1134,1141 and 722). Many of these transfers occurred at the same by the Federal Gov't. Perhaps the Thailand Navy just maintains these ships and they still look "WW2" like. According to Conways book 1947-1995 lists the Vietnamese ships as being in poor operating condition. Well I hope this is of help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Brooks Rowlett Subject: Re: Master and Commander http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/master_and_commander/ I noticed a new edition of _The Far Side of the World_ published along with _Master and Commander_, both with pics of Crowe on the cover. The back cover of FSOTW seems to show the image that was mentioned, with lots of lines hanging from the yards. The sails seemed filled but there were three boats seemingly towing the vessel. I haven't got to that book yet so I don't know what scene in the book (if any?) it might be intended to show. On the other hand - perhaps the hanging lines are the falls rigged for the boats? Brooks A. Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: R/C WW1 Sub caser model for a movie on E-bay Look at item no. 2196580436 on e-bay. It is a model, apparently built by a movie company, of a WW 1 sub chaser some 50 or so years ago, featuring battle damage. The model is of SC51, and is 1:17 scale, therefore it is about 78 inches long, and has remote (radio ?) control machinery. If any SMML subscriber gets this model, I will be glad to develop the history of it, pro bono. Sic 'em. SMML!! I've noticed that there are two stairways forward of B Turret descending from the main deck. I'm not sure this is correct. Surely they wouldn't have sunken stairways in a wash area. Can anyone throw any light on it for me. Thanks Steve Varhegyi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Lou Meszaros" Subject: Re: scratch build ships Bruce, She looks great! Did you build all the detail? I noticed the HR doors, but everything else looks scratch-built. Where did you get the figures? I model in the same scale and I could use some friendly advice if you have the time to answer any questions. Thanks and keep up the great work! Lou ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Chris Burton" Subject: HMAS Canberra and Australia Colours I have a few questions regarding the various paint schemes of the County class cruisers HMAS Canberra and HMAS Australia. I have Alan Raven's notes on Australia for 1941-1942, with the flowing two-tone grey scheme for 1941 and Chicago Blue by the time of Guadalcanal. I know that the colour for Canberra at the Battle of Savo Island has already been discussed on this list but can't find the reference. Was the Canberra also painted in Chicago Blue at this time or in some other colour? For Canberra earlier in 1942, in Alan Payne's book about the ship there is a photograph from May of that year showing the port side in a two-tone scheme with what appear to be large irregular dark grey panels on a light grey background. The hull pattern is distinct but the superstructure is not. There is another photograph of the starboard side from "early 1942" with what may be the same scheme but the shot is very murky. Does anyone know of clearer photographs or have other information on the ship from that time? Payne's book on HMAS Australia has a cover shot of the ship with very light (possibly even white) upperworks and a somewhat darker hull. It looks like a wartime or possibly even post-war shot. Does anyone know more about this? Finally, on the prewar paint scheme of Canberra and Australia, I once came across a painting of Canberra with white hull and buff upperworks. This seems unlikely as I thought both ships were always in 507C prewar but perhaps someone can advise on this.
