I would expect any modern history (including Roger's excellent nautical/naval works) to be devoid of such biases. Doug ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: Unbiased Historical Narrative >> Is there such a thing as an unbiased historical narrative? I wonder. << I to always strive to write all of my books with a completely neutral attitude. Even though my books are pictorials, they still contain 8 to 14 thousand words. I believe that history should be recorded as facts and not biased entertainment as we have in the USA with most of our news agencies. Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: US NAVY UNIFORMS I think I'd much prefer my old all-cotton dungarees to the new ones with a polyester blend when fighting shipboard fires! What shoreside nimrod came up with THAT one?!! True, they probably look better at inspections, but.... Best, John Snyder The Token Yank White Ensign Models http://WhiteEnsignModels.com for secure online ordering For the latest news from WEM, Click Here: http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/brochure/whats_new1.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Peter Samolinski" Subject: Re: scratch build ships The recent ruminations on the Monitor put me in mind of a friend's request: anyone know where I can lay hands on the old Lindbergh box with both the Monitor and the Merrimac in it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Bruce Ross" Subject: Re: scratch build ships >> She looks great! Did you build all the detail? I noticed the HR doors, but everything else looks scratch-built. Where did you get the figures? I model in the same scale and I could use some friendly advice if you have the time to answer any questions. << Lou, contact me at sbross1@charter.net and we can discuss anything you want in more detail. Bruce ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: USS Susan B. Anthony I seem to remember that a list member was looking for photos of the attack transport Susan B. Anthony. Just today, I found a good starboard side view from 14 September 1942. If that peson is still interested, contact me offlist and I will scan the photo for you. walrus@walruscarpenter.com Ken Goldman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: William Weckel Subject: Re: U. S. Navy uniforms I can attest to the color as being black. Mine was jet black, not, as you said, even the darkest navy blue. Mine was definitely wool though. I'm allergic to wool so I know the difference ;-) I can see why alot of the guys got theirs lined in silk when they went on a Westpac. That would have definitely helped me. Fortunately, we rarely wore the dress blues. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: David Sepos Subject: Trumpeter Essex Class Questions Greetings: Has anyone done an in depth study of the 3 Essex carrier kits from Trumpeter i.e. Essex, Yorktown, Franklin? Which is most accurate OOB? What are the potential accuracy problems, if any? Can any of these kits be a reasonble substitute for Intrepid, Hornet (II), or Lexington (II) in the '44-'45 time frame without massive conversion work? TIA, Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Epaulettes To: Ken Goldman Thank you for your response about the poster advertising the movie. This is not authoritative, but I have gathered that the typical 1812 US Naval captain (not Captain) wore two epaulettes, not so much as an indication of rank as an indication of the job (captain). His assistant wore only one epaulette. On CONSTITUTION's Turnaround Cruise last Saturday the captain was a Commander (I am sure), the second in command was a Lieutenant (I think). Their ceremonial uniforms differed only by the epaulettes, insofar as I could make out. I have been on CONSTITUTION several times in the past, and the uniforms were the same each time, regardless of the rank, one epaulette for the executive officer and two for the captain. And I am going to stick my neck out and suggest that epaulettes were worn only by officers attached to an active sea-going vessel, not by those who were shore based. I don't have a clue as to the insignias of rank at the time. My guess is that the Royal Navy was much the same in those days. I bet that some SMML historians can either confirm or correct my amateurish observations. C'mon guys, please elucidate. This would make a good subject for a thesis. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Ken" Subject: Victory At Sea Available on DVD I have not seen any mention that the entire 26-episode Victory At Sea series is now available on digitally remastered DVD. I just bought one from overstock.com for less than $55.00 including shipping. Getting ready to excercise the freeze frame button on the DVD player!
