Hello all smmlers! here is Jim Baumann! 39 years old, frantically trying to beat the unpopular equation of kits in stock v. anticipated lifespan v. new kit releases...!! I own and run a small company manufacturing Canvas awnings and canopies for motor and sail yachts. I have a staff of six who keep me too busy to do as much modelling as I would REALLY like....!! I live in domestic bliss with Katrin and three cats on the south coast of England twixt Portsmouth and Southampton. Aside from the obvious fanatical pursuit of building MANY model ships I also have an interest in sportscars old and new and have recently gotten hooked on flying power kites; just aquired a buggy and ready to attack those long sandy beaches in Wales ... I have watched the other chaps, I can control a big kite, I even fit into the buggy( 6'5" and 19.3 stone!) so all I have to do is marry all the skills up to propel and frighten myself silly at 40 mph 6" off the sand( frighten myself right back to the modelling bench muttering things about it being a young mans sport...!!) Currently on model bench is Loose Cannon HMS FURIOUS 1918(main project) and Soviet Battleship Parizhskaya Kommuna 1938'ish( WILD bent funnel) along with a small russian destroyer of the turn of the century having fun with life and models, addicted to resin and SMML!! Last job before retirement in 1999 was as an Engineer with British Airways. I've visited most places in Europe, and traveled North to Tromso, South to The Falklands East to Brisbane and West to Hawaii. Most of which was accomplished on the "Grey Funnel Line," but I have had quite a few trips to the USA and Canada courtesy of "The Worlds favourite Airline" - Including two trips in Concorde to New York! No more chance of that happening with the "Pointed nosed beauty" being "paid off" next week! Interested in all things nautical and Aeronautical and have a keen interest in H.M.S. Victory. Started H.M.S. Victory model some months ago - Still at it! The Society for Nautical Research - of which I am a member - was responsible for the initial preservation of the ship in the early 1920's when she was just a hulk in Pompey dockyard and still plays a huge part. in the continuing upkeep of the vessel, The Web address is www.snr.org and has many links to other interesting sites. The USS Arizona memorial and USS Missouri were among my most memorable visits. But I also enjoyed the USS Intrepid museum in New York Keep the discussion going I enjoy them all - even from you in the colonies!! ransford ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Amy" Subject: roll call amy here, aka shiplover, hailing from the pacific northwest, vancouver, washington to be exact....(for the portland rustbucket, that would be the correct side of the river) . on my bench is a 1/350 tamiya tirpitz, which gets worked on about 2 hours every 2 months. much to my husbands chagrin. At least the paint dries fast. I live in the foothills (La Crescenta) above Glendale, and, if I hike up the wilderness trail that begins just north of me, I can see the ocean 35 miles away if the smog is thin enough. I am assisted in my shop by a Labrador retriever and a 12-pound desert tortoise. Actually, they are more underfoot than assistants, but I wouldn't have it any other way. My understanding, appreciative wife of 33 years has let me take over most of the available display area for my models and my wood sculpture. That makes two hats, model making and sculpting/carving. Writing is a third hat. One of my screenplays is currently under option, and I have sold several which, unfortunately, never made it to the screen. (My radio work actually has gotten on the air.) At the moment, I am trying to line up a publisher for the history I have just written of the attack transport USS Charles Carroll. My biggest recent model project was a winged thingie. I co-designed the 1:16 scale Wright Flyer that Model Expo has just released. Currently I am building the old Heller 1:400 French 8"-gun submarine Surcouf for myself and the Andrea 1:35 Viking longboat for a commission. Served with the US Army (Army National Guard, Army Reserve, and the Regular Army) for 19 years. I was stationed all over the world, but I didn't let that little thing stop me building models except when I was stationed in 'Nam with the 1st Cav (AM) in '68-69. I enjoy building just about any thing but I do like 1/25-scale trucks and cars. But I have built and collected some WWII IJN ships in 1/700-scale, a few Harley's, 1/35th-scale armor, 1/72-scale aircraft (Vietnam-era mainly) and some modern aircraft. On the bench at this time: 1/25-scale D-8 Cat (Dozer), 1/12-scale Harley (MP Bike) and the 1/350-scale USS Fletcher (in limbo now because of my little problem). Now to my problem: I bought the Tamiya's 1/350-scale USS Fletcher last year but when I got around to opening the kit (moving) I discovered that the instructions were missing. I sent an email to Tamiya-USA asking them if they had some but I haven't heard from them yet, so I was hoping that someone out there can help me out. I live in Dunstable, Bedfordshire in the UK. For the last ten years I've run my own ,fire alarm, building management system, CCTV , electronic door access etc business. I'm currently in the process of selling it to my business partner and yes you've guessed it to spend more time at home modelling. Having said that I'm now helping a friend get a new business venture of his own off the ground but I'm still getting some model making in. Currently a Trumpeter 1/350th USS Hornet, an ISW USS Maine and I've just started cleaning up the hull of my ISW USS Indianapolis. I've also got two or three aviation projects on the table too. Best Regards Andy Jones ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: "Sue Chapman" Subject: Re: Roll Call G,Day Playmates - Clive Chapman from near Canberra, Australia. Ex UK Ministry of Defence - Navy, now with Aussie Defence Department. New reader of SMML - got some good tips already. I've found time to do some modelling at last - starting the old 1/96 Revell Cutty sark, hoping to use the kit as a basis and do some serious scaled improvements (before I get into wood!). Also planning a large model of Vosper D class MTB/MGB, as close as possible to my fathers WW2 boat - MTB 649 using John Lambert's plans (looking for his Anatomy of a Ship book on the Vosper 'Dogs'). Eventually would like to do the HMS Lord Nelson of 1906 (I have one of her original gun tompion crests). Interested in hearing from anyone with same interests. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: Starline / Fleetline Subject: Re: SC movies Have been trying to e-mail Jim Franklyn but for whatever reason I can't seem to get him, it's an AOL thing I'm sure. Anyway in answer to SC Movies... Hi Jim, It was me (in Australia) who has the tape, but as you are aware the formats are different. You could enquire at your local video store on converting it to NTSC (your standard) from PAL (ours). Don't know where you are in the States but a friend of mine tells me local Universities often have that facility usually attached to their library department. Apparently even the one near Seattle rents out PAL players overnight. I have had your last e-mail in my things to do file for ages as I was trying to locate any remaining SCs here in OZ, no luck I'm afraid. I spoke to our resident old vessel expert and although being aware of various PT boats & Fairmiles he hasn't come across any SCs. There is another expert over on our other coast whom I speak to on occasion, I have been meaning to ask him, you never know there could be one hiding in Western Australia. Let me know how you go with the converting thing and I'll ask over here. Last time I enquired (a few years ago) they wanted about $70 an hour to do it...it was just a plain rip-off so I gave up. I'll ring around again. All the best, Kevin FLEETLINE P.S. Oh yea forgot the SC model on e-bay is definately one from "Thunder Afloat", if I only had the money it would be an interesting aquisition. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: WILLIAM ORETO Subject: Re: Roll Call Checking in, Bill Oreto -Keyport, New Jersey -USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22) From: Ray Cockram Subject: Roll call Ahoy smmilies, Ray Cockram here, a retired soldier of the Australian Regular Army and before that the Royal Australian Navy. Predreadnoholic. Currently on the bench; Kombrig Royal Sovereign (very nice kit and the mother of all predreadnoughts). Rebuilding a Radetsky after getting inspired by Jim Baumann and slowly building non-predreadnoughts G3 and Furious. Finished something else for the dutch nationals (if I have time to attend). "Soapbox on" Just bought a new Tamiya Suzuya for nostalgic reasons as their old tool Suzuya was my first ever ship kit and built it / added GMM cruiser stuff over the weekend. Frankly I am disappointed by it. Level of detail is average and far lower than, for example, the Kombrig Royal Sovereign which I bought at exactly the same price. The kit is easy to assamble nut so is the new Hasegawa Nachi at about half the price. Now if some one would do the original Suzuya(ex Novik)........ "Soapbox off". I worked as an archaeologist for about 20 years before settling in to a desk job. I suppose I could be described as a bureaucrat. I used to build 1/700 warships as a teenager but my interest now lies with 1/72 scale and I have ten models in various stages of construction. I am hoping to R/C some of the larger models. I am a Desert Storm Army vet. I buy, what little is out there in my interest areas, enthusiastically, but somehow never get around to actually building one, unless "she who must be obeyed" orders me to build one or she won't let me buy any more. I am Dean Markley from Amish country in Pennsylvania (near Lancaster). I mainly collect 1:1250 ships but I do dabble in others. I have a Dean's Marine HMS Skirmisher I have been working on for 5 years. It's about 5% complete! I have oodles of 1:700 ships still in boxes. Just waiting for the kids to move out so I have some time! Oh, I am a chemist by profession. For anyone with chemical-related questions, I wold surely try to help! Although it offers me quite a selection of subject material to pick from, the drawback is a lack of personal time to build my own stuff---. Established in 1990, Microglass offers an interesting variety of hulls for the scratchbuilder at realistic prices. For an overview of the line, visit our website at www.microglass.net This "roll call" idea is a good one. It offers the opportunity to get acquainted with the rest of the modelling community. Thanks, SMML. cheers all, Karl Kalb ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 41) From: ED LARYEH Subject: roll call Great idea, this - thanks I'm Aryeh Wetherhorn - former Naval Person (3 tours in Viet Nam, 3 wars and assorted other adventures since moving to Israel) I earn my living in Computers, but write Naval History on the side. (My full length articles are in the Polish language magazine Okrety Wojenne, commentary on questions frequently appear in Warship International) Main interest is in 1:1200/1250 models. ( I have about 5000) Current projects - rebuilding or replacing crude scratch builts from Operation TORCH 1942, camouflage patterns on 3-4 dozen ships from the Battle of Leyte Gulf. painting aircraft and camouflage patterns on a few Italian WWII ships. completing camo painting on several RN WWII ships. SMML is a great source for model and appearance information (and I love Richard Rodgers VICTORY AT SEA score, including the repetitious part) Aryeh Wetherhorn Elazar, Israel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 42) From: ZNWOOD Subject: Re: Roll Call Greetings Zack Wood 28 year old Utility Locator from Columbus Ohio, married with a 3 year old son Interests: Primarily 1/700 japanese destroyers subs and auxiliaries-but the occasional carrier or battleship, also 1/72nd aircraft on occasion and 1/6000 scale wargaming miniatures-havent learned how to play yet but they are fun to paint. Modelling for over 30 years (and trying to learn yet!). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 45) From: "Ken Durling" Subject: Roll call Hi - Ken Durling here. Lurker, mostly. Aircraft fanatic (most of my modeling) with a penchant for things naval, and absolutely love ships. Have a few ship models in mind and on/off bench of the sort discussed here, mostly a 1/350 Fletcher, and a 1/400 Prinz Eugen, and I will confess I consider large-scale wood sailing ship modeling to be the highest form of modeling there is. Maybe when I retire. Reading all the O-Brian novels now for the 3rd time, waiting eagerly - and apprehensively - for the forthcoming movie. Ken ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 46) From: "Hogg, Gordon" Subject: Roll call Gordon Hogg, 53, in Lexington, Kentucky. I am the international studies librarian at the University of Kentucky, and a translator and editor with a number of encyclopedias and reference works. Glad to find another SMML librarian in Kevin Woodruff down in Tennessee. I build 1:700 ships from a range of periods, slowly but surely. My scratchbuilding projects over the last ten years have been eerily predictive of kits that seem always to come out *before* I've finished each one of my prototypes. So far, I've managed to anticipate the appearance of the 1:700 kits of French destroyer LE FANTASQUE, the 1930s Soviet flotilla leader TASHKENT and cruiser KIROV, destroyers USS JOHN S. MCCAIN and USS FORREST SHERMAN, modern Italian destroyer LUIGI DURAND DE LA PENNE, replenishment ship USS SACRAMENTO, and the light cruiser USS ROANOKE (CL-145). I'm racing to finish scratchbuilding the replenishment ship USS ROANOKE (AOR-7) before someone somewhere comes out with a kit of that one, too. On the bench, otherwise, are: a conversion from Regia Marina ATTILIO REGOLO to postwar destroyer leader SAN MARCO, an ARLEIGH BURKE launch-day diorama at Bath Iron Works, the South African destroyer JAN VAN RIEBEECK converted from matchbox HMS KELLY, and a "what-if" missile ship conversion of the never-finished IOWA-class USS KENTUCKY (BB-66). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 47) From: jnroberts60 Subject: Roll call Jim Roberts, age 43, from Port St. Lucie, Florida. CAD draftsman for a small architectural firm in Vero Beach FL. Happily married for 13 years, one daughter, age 8. Current workbench projects: 1/35 Tamiya M2A2 and M60A1 w/ reactive armor. Over in the "shipyard" I have a 1/350 BWN Massachusetts about 20 percent complete and a 1/350 Tamiya Bismark at 75 percent. While my primary modelling interests are 1/35 armor, I have spent many years building 1/48 aircraft and 1/350 ships. My 1/350th scale naval collection includes three battleships, one cruiser, four destroyers and three submarines. Not a very extensive fleet, but one I am proud of, nonetheless. Although I rarely build ship models anymore, I have always enjoyed reading SMML on a daily basis for it's interesting variety of "1/1 scale" nautical topics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Mistress Lorna Subject: SMML site update Hi everyone, A couple more items for the site - Keith Butterley sends us his 1/600 HMS Belfast article as well as one on HMS Onslow & HMS Pakenham in 1/700 using the Tamiya O class kit, while in the review section we have a look at Dragon's USS Hampton.
