I am 75 years old and a retired research chemist and provincial civil servant. I scratch build waterline models in 1:1500 scale using wood hulls and polystyrene upperworks, and piano wire for guns, masts etc. On the stocks are models of Empress of Ireland (a CP liner sunk in 1914 with tremendous loss of life), and British heavy cruisers from the 1920's and 30's - Berwick, Cumberland, Exeter, London (as rebuilt in WWII), and the Spanish Canarias. I have over 100 of thse models, both warships and merchant marine. I gave about 35 models of Canadian warships to a local Military Museum, but after showing them for a few weeks, they put them in storage! Regards, Alan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ron Wild" Subject: Call the roll Hi ... I'm Ron Wild, and I live in Summerland BC Canada. Formerly lived in Victoria, BC but couldn't stand the rain. I'm 73 and have been building models of one kind or another since I was 10. My latest project was a Revell Flower class corvette which I converted to R/C. Most of my boats, however. are scratch built 1/96 scale R/C models. I'm glad to see so many Canadians in this hobby. I am building and collecting 1/700 models of the Kriegsmarine & Imperial Navy. I transformed one room in our house into a harbour diorama, which contains now 95 models. At the moment I have the HP Hipper under construction, my favourite subjects are unfinished and projected ships. Best Regards Detlef ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "geoff-smith" Subject: Roll Call Geoff Smith from Darwen, Lancashire, UK. I'm 54, with three daughters (one gone) and a dog. Since retiring with arthritis three years ago, I've not had much time for modelling and what used to take two minutes, now takes five. My main interests are WWI ships and aircraft, with WWII RAF rescue boats thrown in. At the moment I'm in the throes of building a 1/350 SMS Dresden, 1/72 Revell Corvette, 1/48 Albatros D.III and using AutoCad to draw up parts for these and the lines for a couple of RAF boats. Things are going very slowly. Oh, I also have a Heller Victory which is going even more slowly. SMML is one of the the best on the web, due to the informed content and the good nature of the members. Oh, and Shane and Lorna, of course. Thanks to all of you, Geoff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Gmshoda Subject: Re: Roll Call Gregory Shoda from Honolulu, HI. I work for the Dept of Veterans Affairs but soon to retire. From 1987 to about March 2002, was an avid card modeler. Have not done any modeling for over a year. I have a half built Presviet sitting around waiting to be finished. Still avidly interested in warships, particularly old battleships (preWWII). Just keeping up with the SMML, Steel Navy, and Model Warships websites is enough to use up a lot of my available free time. The high level of accuracy and detailed knowledge of all the other talented ship modelers has been daunting. So I mostly download images of battleships from websites and collect photographic warship books. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Danjessar Subject: Re: Roll Call Dan Schweikert, Franklinton, NC USA programmer Interests are mainly WWII naval and aircraft subjects On the bench: 1/570 Revell Titanic with GMM PE 1/700 JAG USS Raleigh LPD-1 1/350 Tamiya Enterprise 1/72 Revell PT-117 in zebra stripe camo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Re: Roll Call Hi SMMLies, 42 but don't feel a day over ---- 42. Seems like I'm just a nipper at 41 yrs compared with some listers! I'm a desk jockey in the market research industry, previously in marketing and sales in fast moving consumer goods. Despite this I've managed to retain a reasonable grasp of reality, having started my working life knifehanding in a fish factory and crewing trawlers! I'm also editor of our local scale marine modellers club newsletter. I'm modelling in Auckland, NZ, where our navy is kinda redundant or at least being forced that way due to years of government spending cut-backs - these days there's more emphasis on fisheries protection and airsea rescue than defence. So my modelling is not particularly influenced by the hard core of the grey funnel line. As our club is big on working models I also tend to the larger scale r/c end of the marine modelling spectrum. On the workbench at present is a 1:32 scale steam paddle tug, scratch-built and 40 inches long - hull is almost complete, running gear is half set up on the test bench, decking and superstructure are but twinkles in my eye. One of the long term goals is a 1:96 scale HMS Lord Nelson, the last of the pre-dreadnoughts. I'm thinking scratch built hull and superstructure, and a second mortgage for the John Haynes fittings! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Tony Mattson" Subject: George Peat - (marginally) off topic Hi George, saw yr roll call this morning and I wondered if you are any way connected to the George Peat who set up the first Hawkesbury River ferry service at Mooney Mooney in 1840. Reason I ask is that there were two car ferries operating in Auckland, NZ, between 1946 and 1959. These were were built by Poole & Steele in 1930 in Sydney, Australia and operated on the Hawkesbury River. On the outbreak of war they were redesignated as USS AB20 (prev. named "George Peat")and USS AB42 (prev. "Frances Peat") and served in the Pacific Islands as units of the US Navy. After the war they were sold and converted to vehicular ferries. I'm particularly interested in the early history and war service of the two vessels. I am a professional modelmaker but unfortunately have little time for hobby modelmaking nowadays :-(. I spend most of my spare time working on my three web sites. Through the model making page on my "44ft Motor Lifeboat" web site at http://home.online.no/~lawford/xrl/model-lifeboats-photos.htm I try to help anyone who are or hope to make a model of this type of lifeboat. These boats where design for the U.S. Coast Guard and where also used by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Canadian Coast Guard and many other lifesaving organisations. So I decided to run L'Arsenal on a permanent basis, that is less than evident! Today the big projects are: 1/350 La Fayette frigate 1/350 Liberty Ship 1/350 Independence class carrier 1/400 La Fayette update set for the Heller kit and a 1/400 Escorteur d'Escadre in her ASM fit (Maillé-Brézé) The biggest challenge at the moment is learning 3 D design and drilling that will give in the future almost perfect hulls and parts! David R. Wells, Tinton Falls, New Jersey USA, Earth. (For the baseball fans in North America, I don't really pitch for the Yankees, but I'm hoping that George Steinbrenner will send me a paycheck by mistake someday.) I'm interested in just about all 20th (and maybe now 21st) century warships, however I have a special taste for battleships. Back when we were both at Bell Labs, Rajen Datta and I created the infamous Rajen's List, an over-ambitious attempt to list and review every plastic/resin model ship kit of all time. (We did this after work, over pizza and root beer, so AT&T & Lucent have no claim on it) It got too big for us, so now Joe Poutre is the editor. Joe still lets me do a major edit every now and then. http://www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/shiprevs.html Joe Poutre and I are also partners-in-crime on the Battleship New Jersey Historical Museum Society web site: http://www.bb62museum.org/ I have too many model ship projects in progress to list (I'll finish some of them someday) but I've had a 1/720 South Dakota on my work table for an awfully long time. Other special interests include "never built" ships, and some truly bizzare "alternate history" ships. Here Bruno Gire, 46, living in the sweet & beautiful South-West France. I teach technology in a small college in the middle of the vineyards, in the northern limits of Bordeaux. I fell in love with ships and everything that floats by the age of 8 and started building kits the year after. Now, 115 kits after, I'm concentrating on 1-700 and 1-350 naval ships, 1-72 aircrafts and 1-100 space launchers. In 1989 I founded a modeling club in my college for boys and girls from 10 to 18. This year we're 15 members working on ships and motorcabs. On my bench : 1-400 CV Béarn, 1-700 HiMold Nagato (1931 & 1944) and Fuso, Samek Alaska & Dunkerque and a mamoth 1-700 diorama project on the sinking of POW. I've been a fanatic of dioramas for six years. I use to built six or seven kits simultaneously to add variety... and to allow the paint/ glue to dry. I need about one year to build a model, as I use to add a big amount of scratch. Now, I make my own photoetchings, decals and I'm mastering resin moldings. Maybe one day I'll produce my own kits... When I get saturated with kits, I go to my workshop to build musical Renaissance instruments.... I just completed my 91st (a Venetian harpsichord) ... and you know what? I work as IT manager for a computer reseller company in Brazil and I build planes, cars, ships kits since I was 8 or 9. Recently (3 years ago, approximately), I developed a huge interest on ship models specifically. I spend my time much more reading and studying techniques than actually building. I'm specially interested in the IJN Yamato. I have at least 5 models of this ship: one Arii 1/600 almost finished, started to build a Tamiya 1/350 which will be a R/C model, and the remaining ones still in their boxes. Just a curiosity: is there any other brazilian here in the SMML? Thank you all! Eduardo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 29) From: "Stephen Cowardin" Subject: Roll Call! Hi Everyone, I have been modelling since I was seven years old. My first real recollection of passionately building ships is when my best friend and I went to see "Sink the Bismarck". Afterwards, we still had no knowledge of what the Bismarck actually looked like and there were certainly no kits available (the only models of anything axis available at the local hardware store were the aroura Me109 molded in red and the Zero in yellow - Gads!). All we knew was that we wanted Bismarcks and the lack of a kit was not going to stop us! We would build our bismarcks using what kits were available, our imaginations and recollections from the movie remembering especially the multitude of AA flashes from the superstructure. What emerged were a pair of Revell Missouris every spare ship's gun that we could rob from other models of about the same size (we knew nothing about scale in those days but neither did the kit manufacturers). Oh, Two little boys with ack ack laden Missouris speaking in German accents and pushing them around the living room yelling about the prowess of our "super warships". They departed this life weeks later in the lake, victims of HMS King George V's BB guns and cherry bombs. You can imagine our disappointment years later when Lindberg produced that first model of Bismarck and "forgot" to include all the necessary firepower! I'm an episcopal priest now and married to a real sweetie. We have two kids in college. My "best friend" and I are still best friends but second only to our wives. We still build models but have difficulty trying to keep our hands out of the spare parts box when it comes to building any Iowa class! He rides motor cycles while I have a lovely vintage porsche 911 and these are as close as we will ever get to circling that grey monster and diving through her flashing array of anti aircraft fire. Nothing changes! Thanks to all who contribute so many interesting articles and especially to Lorna and Shane who make SMML possible! My wife Mary and I own a small company which designs and builds water treatment equipment for industry and municipalities. I started modeling with Strombecker, Revell and other kits before I was 10. Put myself through college repairing ship models at a private museum in San Francisco. Was not an active modeler from age 25 to 55, then picked it up again. Am probably the slowest modeler in the world (except for Franklyn Brown), I have been scratch building the first battleship New Jersey (BB-16) in 1:144 for about 4 years, have about a year and a half to go. I don't have much to offer, but I am a strong believer of the old saying: "Never hurts to ask". I am here to help one and all. Please contact me at GUSDOCVILL@aol.com for anything. To Roldan Mar Keep in touch. I'll see what Jeff brings back and more than willing to print up extra prints of whatever he brings back of the Reagan. To Mike Donegan I am very much interested in how you build your Kirov - I am saving up for the PitRoad kit due out later. May I ask your opinion of the DML vs the PitRoad Kirov. Hx has demonstrated -- to me - PitRoad a better product than DML. At that stage of my life that I want an "easy" build rather than a "hard" build. I'll buy a Matchbox Indianapolis and convert her because she is the ONLY plastic kit out there. But, I'll pay the big bucks for Skywave/PitRoad San Diego kits and make my conversion. To Rick Heinbaugh Thank you again for the Repulse!! Finally got the PE for her and she is next. Eager to show you what I have done to the Suffolks and Ajax. Thank you again, my friend!! Grace and peace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, bless you all and your beloved families forever. I am a scientist working on how the heart is made. I currently live in London, Ontario with my wife, two kids and a dog but have lived in various Ontario cities and Austin, Texas (always land-locked). I have had a long time interest in the sea and naval matters and have now been modeling about 10 years. I dabble in IJN planes when I need a break from modeling wee things. On the bench - I am currently building the Akagi in 1/700 as well as the WEM Askold. Cheers, Tom ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 44) From: "michael thrupp" Subject: Roll Call Hi My name is Mike Thrupp and I am a retired power generation industry statistician. I'm a doctor and an ex-pat sassenach living in Bonnie Scotland. I've got a wife and one very geriatric pussycat, both of whom put up with modelling being my passion, but not quite my obsession. I've been modelling for as long as I can remember, and my interests go in phases. It's been ships for the past few years, but I'm taking some time out to paint some model soldiers. On the stocks, White Ensign's 1/350 HMS Janus, 1/700 IJN Isuzu, and I'm looking in a rather guilty manner at that plank-on-frame Lowestoft sailing trawler that's been sitting around for years. And a useful tip for keeping your wife's approval for your hobby. Spell out her initials in signal flags on your next model. But be careful what you put it on, though. I put my mother in law's on HMS Tartar. She did eventually see the joke!! Happy modelling, David Griffith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 49) From: "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject: call the roll John Reid: an Aussie who does information and communications technology things for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations at its Rome HQ. I am interested in 1/1200, both from a modelling and collecting point of view, and have been for over 40 years, since the days of the Eagle and Pyro plastics. Earlier in 2003, my house in Canberra Australia burnt down and I lost my lifetime collection, about 1000 ships - now working vigorously to rebuild. Many thanks to those SMMLies who have given me hints on sources, and in a couple of cases passed on their lifetime collections as they have moved to other scales. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 50) From: Starline / Fleetline Subject: RN Ships boats Is there and decent reference (in particular 'on-line') for RN ships boats from about 1935 onwards?
