Retired from United States federal civil service with a career in USAF aircraft logistics management. I buy and build 1/700 scale WWII ships, over 70 constructed with about 40 still in the box. Also have build wooden sailing ships and many WW! through WWII military armour and aircraft, mostly 1/72 scale. I'm not a accurate builder, most models are out-of-the-box with minimal re-working, a few have PE added. I do greatly admire detailed works but at my ripe old age of 69 I have too many projects yet unfinised to spend months researching and detailing a single model. I do enjoy the SMML releases and the chatter, and exchanges with other members helping my efforts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "bert" Subject: Re: roll call (TaT) R.N.'42-'46 FAA Corsairs and Avengers served on Victorious was part of B.P.F. Model interests: "anything" predominately ships, used to be 1200 but these days hand and eye co-ordination not good enough now do 400 plus stuff just finished a model of a minesweeper for a friend in the R.N.A.association. Yours Aye (TaT). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Shane Subject: Re: HMAS Australia Hi Mike, Check out the Naval Historic Centre at: http://www.history.navy.mil/ They have some nice shots of HMAS Australia & other RAN cruisers. The Naval Historical Society of Australia will soon have some more shots of RAN ships on their website, once the scanning is done. They also have a nice photo CD " Warships of the Past and Present" which was released last year, with Vol 2 due out at the end of the year. It contains over 1000 photographs. http://www.navyhistory.org.au All the best, Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SantMin Subject: Re: Roll Call WOW!!! The Roll Call thing is Great. I got the wonderful idea of making my own list with just name, city, country and a few words from each email but then I discovered that I did not save the previous emails. Such a list would be nice to refer to from time to time. Great Job! Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Craig Bennett" Subject: Re: Roll Call Hi My name is Craig Bennett, 45, Waste Water Treatment Operator for the US Filter Corp. Build warships in scales from 1/400-1/800 but I'm pretty interested in 1/700. Warships from 1940-90. It's been said before but what amazing amount knowledge and skill on this website that makes it interesting. Well I've started 1/72 scale FG-1 Phamtom of the HMS ARK ROYAL, June, 1977 by Matchbox. Just got some help from the message board so that helps out. Craig ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Charles Jerden Subject: Roll Call Howdy all, I am Charles Jerden 43, of Fort Worth Texas. One wonderful Wife, Two great Kids (one of them is a pretty good modeler himself) Two Jack Russell dogs and Two "OK" ships cats. Professionally I build Fighter aircraft. I have built parts of, or assembled complete aircraft of F-16, F-111, B-1, F-22, A-12 and at the TAF the Me-262 and Ki-43 Oscars. Currently I'm in F-16 final assembly CEII. That is to say we get to do final close up and roll out the airplane. We have just finished and rolled the first Block 60 F-16 for the UAE amid a flurry of double shifts, so Iam still a little punchy. That said, Of course I build ships. It is hard to work 10 to12 hours on an aircraft and come home to find another one to work on on the hobby bench. I once worked in 1/700 scale but these old eyes of mine now find it too hard. I've made the switch it 1/350 and 1/400 WWI Thur 1960's era warships. I don't do carriers, they take up too much display space. My current and long time project is a very modified Revell "Mission" T-2 tanker. Of course by the time I finish that one I could of scratch built one in 1/350. Oh well been a hoot. I'm currently more in a collecting mode than a building as my work schedule is goofy and I'm trying to have a family life too. My 15 year old sons interest is girls and model rocketry. I indulge him on the latter as a way to keep him out of trouble. The model rockets is all I'm finishing right now. I will say the time he and I have together in the workshop and going to the far ranging rocket shoots is priceless. I get to really talk with my son, find out what up and help direct him, It's also a blast to shoot rockets. last week My beefy little 3inch rocket did about 450mph and got up about 3800 ft on a mid size G motor! Now if we can just keep the American feds from regulating us out of existence... Next project, Titanic, or maybe one of the USS Arizona kits I have. Perhaps the iron shipwrights LST, or I'll just simplify and do a Mirage U-boat kit with the etch. So much to do so little time. I agree with one other smml'y. This list is great way to feel the touch of my modeling passion even on those days I can't sit before the bench. Shane, Lorna Ya'll are the best! Thanks ever so much. C.W. Jerden Ft. She has 4 propulsion pod pods instead of the usual internal engine/motors and propshaft configuration. One of the two guys that works in our local train shop picked up the old Sterling Missouri kit. He needs the written directions or what ever else comes as direction in that kit. He picked it up at a flee market. He wants to R/C it as well, get his feet wet for the first time and he may just do that. So I told him I know of a place on line that has allot of brain power when it comes to ship models etc... If there is a SMMLie who has them and would copy them, you could make some gent very happy and get him underway for the first time in his new endeavor. You can post here or reach me at propmeup@att.net, Thank you, Keith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: HAZEGRAYADM Subject: Re: Hornet CV-12 as of 1944 To Michiel Woort: You would use the Essex kit for the CV-12 as of that date. She wasn't modernized until late 1945 and indeed would be similar to the Yorktown at that time. No change occurred until that time: even her camouflage stayed the same. Include the hanger deck catapult and of course the radar suite would be different. Consult the many photos available for details. The cats are NOT allowed into the hobby room, and the fish don't care. We have 3 children, 2 sons and a daughter, that have all grown and moved out. My wife, Carol, is very supportive of my hobby of model building. She considers it an inexpensive pastime compared to my previous pursuits of hunting, gun collecting and hot rod cars. As for income to support this hobby shop at home, I am employed by a large home improvement chain. Modeling interests are varied. I built my first model at around 8 years old, and like most, wandered away from building for years and then returned. I like 1/48th aircraft, 1/350th ships, with a few other scales thrown in for good measure, and 1/35th armor, all in the WWII period, and 1/25th car models. The unbuilt stash consists of around 1400 or so unbuilt models, that I fully intend to build before I die. And that means I will live a long time at my current rate of finishing only one or two a year. I have not been able to work on a model for several months now due to moving into a new house in June. The hobby room is still in a state of disarray, most of the models and books are still packed away in boxes, and I still haven't found my X-Acto knives! The reference books will go into a spare bedroom that is going to be a library when I get that room organised and the bookcases finished. I have been a subscriber to SMML since the first issue, and it is a true treasure trove of knowledge and experience. Many thanks to all the contributors, and expecially to Shane and Lorna for the many hours spent maintaining SMML. Mike Settle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: DSand47702 Subject: Roll Call Hi. I'm 56, married, and have three grown children. I conclude a 36-year USNR mustang career 28JAN04, but continue a 29-year secondary math teaching career. Since '98, I've joined the two vocations as a civilian math PACE instructor, and next summer's sixty-day underway program is built around RIMPAC04. I began ship modeling at age 8 with Revell's Missouri, Helena, and The Sullivans, then left the hobby until the 1/700 Waterline kits appeared in the early '70s. I've gone over to 1/350 recently, and am now scratchbuilding much of Trumpeter's Arizona to make a 1943 Aleutians campaign Pennsylvania. I manufacture herbal cosmetics. Built a couple of ships, still have a 1/350 Yamato to complete, and I take the occasional ship photograph, some of which have been published. As today is Diwali, here's wishing all of you and your families a very happy and prosperous Diwali! They also have the 1/72 scale FLower class Corvette for about $52. Very tempting..... Bill (No affiliation with ME, except as a satisfied customer) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "E. Arnold" Subject: Roll Call/Belknap Hi there. Ed Arnold here, living in Southeastern Connecticut, USA. Presently working on the Zvesda Oscar II submarine kit, it's going to be a lot of work. While I was in the Navy, I worked with a Gunner's Mate who was on the Belknap when she collided with the Kennedy. He had taken a lot of snap shots of the fires and devastation. While they didn't show a lot of detail, as they were taken at night, they were very scary.
