I was in the Netherlands too this summer. Beside the museum in Amsterdam, which as far as I could see was mostly for the merchant marine, I can recommend the Museum in Rotterdam. In Rotterdam there is a fantastic bookshop connected to the museum. Not only books but also models could be bought. And there is a nice old Gun turret ship outside to visit as well. regards Hans Christensen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Steve Singlar Subject: Re: Roll Call Steve here from beautiful downtown Pelham NH (pop. 10,500). Navy vet - 7 active, 21 reserve and retired in 1994 as a Senior Chief Electronics Tech. Nice ceremony aboard USS Constitution. One tour in Vietnam (1968-69) aboard a real destroyer (six guns, no waiting). One trip to Cuba and one NATO cruise, all in tin cans. The rest of the time was shore based communications and ship's maintenance facilities (SIMA). I volunteer aboard the USS Salem. Currently in the yards: my first resin kits - A Summner class DD (USS Hugh Purvis) and the Garcia. Also Tamiya modern USS New Jersey 1/350, a 1/350 Arizona, a 1/700 Enterprise CV-6 and a resin LPD (to be made USS Juneau for a life long friend in Phoenix). Recently completed the Revel USS John Paul Jones as Dupont and the Brooke as R.L. Page for friend I went to Vietnam with. Still shakey on air brushing and with resin kits, but I am trying. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: FBustelo Subject: Roll Call - Present Ok, my turn. Felix Bustelo - age 38; married 16 years, no kids but 3 dogs (dachshunds - Mel, George & Snoopy) who keep me company when I am working on my models. We live in Valley Stream, NY on beautiful Long Island - just east of the NYC limits. I work at the Federal Reserve Bank of NY - offical job title Supervising Examiner - what I actually do is head a staff of analysts that crunch numbers and prepare reports and data analysis for bank examiners before head out on-site. My background is more computer programming, software and statistics and my background meets the needs for this job. Currently on the workbench - too too many. Just completed a pair of ISW 143' ATA/ATRs - one in her USN colors and one as she appeared post war the Edmund H. Moran II. In progress, the L'Arsenal Bearn kit, the Skywave Miami kit (building as the Providence for a friend's dad who served on her), ISW USS Amphitrite monitor and USCG cutters Mohawk and Modoc, and a 1/600 scale kit that I need to keep a secret for now. Felix Bustelo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: GORDONBUT Subject: Telford show Im trying to find out when the show is at Telford (uk) can anyone tell me please Gordon Buttress ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Mnw888 Subject: Sad News Hi I've received the sad news that John Heasel, a subscriber to SMML for many years passed away last Saturday. John, of St.Clair Shores Michigan, was an avid collector of early 1/1200th ships. Anybody who has had an Alnavco List over the last 10 years or so might well have noticed photo's of part of John's collection in the centre of the list. A nice man and a great friend. Malcolm N Waite Liverpool UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Joe Hinds Subject: Research Information Howdy Everybody, I'm in need of some research assistance and I can't think of a more enformed group then this one. I need to know the number of rounds carried and that ammo, ordnance weight by the following boats as 1944. 1. S-100 type-North Sea, Channel-Meditrainian 2. 80' Elco-North Sea, Channel-Meditrainian 3. Vosper 73'-same and Meditrainian 4. M.A.S. 500 type boats-Meditrainian I have the boat weights, fuel weights, torpedo weights. I just need the number of rounds and weight. This will be a comparison chart show the percentage of ship weight vs. fuel and ordnance weight. So far, a few preliminary rough charts showing the destructive power of the torpedo boat against the larger ships is stunning. Pound for pound, nothing else came close to all out destructive power. No rush on this request. I'll be working on this segmint of my book for sometime. And thanks in adavance to all. Joe Hinds ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Arthur Herrick" Subject: Re: Roll Call - Randy Ward You wrote 19 Oct., to SMML: >> Randy Ward, semi-retired from just about everything from mining engineer to technical writer/illustrator, currently driving a school bus here in southern New Hampshire, U.S. Specialty is scratch-building with styrene, mostly Mississippi River towboats, barges, locks and dams, etc. Also, trans-Atlantic liners and tankers. << Randy Ward, Where do you live in Southern New Hampshire? Art Herrick Westmoreland, New Hampshire USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "bert" Subject: Re: HMS Victorious deck marking colours? from (TaT) Stephen the colour was yellow and at intervals along the length of the line would be markings of the distance left to the end of the flight deck such as from the stern forward 500-400-300-200,etc the lines projecting aft from the steam vent at I believe 10 degree intervals were an aid to the captain to get the ship steaming directly into the wind when the steam jet was directly over the centre line then that was the course taken when flying operations were being carried out. I do have a photograph of the flight deck camo scheme but would not want to start any hares by saying what I believe the colours were except they were dark tones.Am I too old in my eightieth year to remember?. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Paveljana1 Subject: Roll Call Hi Everyone, Let me introduce myself, some of you may already know me, and have been wondering what the heck has happened to me. My name is Pavel Vacata, 38, married to a great person of the gentler sex. No children, but I do have a neat dog, who helps look for things when the "carpet monster" gets them. Does not have the slightest clue why I am on all fours, but it's a great excuse to play. I was born in what is now the Czech Republic, grew up in Southern Africa (Rhodesia, South West Africa now Zimbabwe, Namibia) and South Africa. Lived in Canada, Czech Republic and now in the USA. Served in the military, became a paramedic, walked out of a building 3 minutes before a bomb exploded in it, been bombed, shot at and had first hand knowledge of terrorism before it became a talking point here in the US. I have a Bachelors in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing, have done professional model work in the past, and have now joined JAG Collective Inc. (As Tom put it, I live in the same city as a large well known rodent) Have been modeling from age 7 or so, have an interest in mainly 1/700 scale ships, primarily Battleships and Battlecruisers, but do other types as well as some Sci Fi, aircraft and armour both in 1/72 scale. Regards Pavel Vacata ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Re: Royal Sovereign Pirie Sublett -the page that you have encountered is a Polish equivalent of "Page does not exist" error. Apparently the website with the photo of "Resolution" is down either temporaryli or permanently. Pieter Cornelissen -would you mind describing (or better still posting) the photo in question??? I have never seen a photo of reconstructed battleship of RS class wearing Victorian scheme. I am not saying that none exist, just that I haven't seen one yet. The black/ white/ buff scheme was used (according to R.A. Burt) as late as 1902 on all of "Bulwark" class battleships (as completed) and "Russel" (of "Duncan" class) carried the sache scheme during her preliminary trials also in 1902. I have yet to see evidence of British black/white/buff painted warship after 1902. Regards Darius ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Chuck Messer" Subject: Re: Roll Call Well, I'm Chuck Messer, Engineering Aide at Setpoint Systems Corp., a temperature control contractor whose customers include NORAD (Cheyenne Mountain Station) Buckley and Schriever Air Force Bases. I build everything that floateth, creepeth and flyeth on the Earth, and a few things that go beyond the atmosphere. I've been building US and Japanese navy WW2 subjects in 1/700, Royal Navy and Kriegsmarine WW2 in 1/600, and a few 1/400, and 1/350 ships as well. Maybe someday I'll actually finish something. Chuck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Roy Knight" Subject: roll call Hey all; Roy Knight here from the great landlocked state of Wyoming. For the last ten years I have been a Corrections Officer in the States of Kansas and Wyoming. I just started a job as chief of security for a mushroom farm being built about 20 miles from my home in Riverton. My main interests in models are Submarines, and Armour, but I have been branching out and have gotten started on Gundam robots. My current projects include a resin cast copy of a Revel-Germany skipjack made into the USS Scorpion, and a dio of three Gundam robots kit bashed into futuristic US military ground assault mechs. Everyone on this board has been helpfull when I have asked questions about naval ships, some have even sent me copies of articles and plans that they have in thier library. Thanks for all of the help in the past and I look forward to checking my E-mail to see what is going on. Ed P ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: Björn Bäcklund Subject: Cunard liners Just got back from the Caronia and that inspired me to start on the old Airfix kit of the Queen Elizabeth. I now have some colour questions. Has anyone got a good formula for the Cunard red funnels? The hulls of QE2 and Caronia is in some blue colour, but how about Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary? Black? Last: is there a model or drawings of the current Caronia?
