I'm searching for the exact birth dates and birth places of two military designers/visionaries: J. (John) Walter Christie, American (1865?-1944), designer of tanks. Geoffrey Nathaniel Pyke, British (1894-1948), eccentric inventor and developer of Project Habbakuk (also spelled Habakkuk), an immense aircraft carrier made of ice for use in WWII. Two of his subordinates invented "Pykrete" in his honor: an impervious ice mixture made from wood pulp and water. Anyway, I've checked obits and biographical sketches in the usual sources, plus a 1959 biography of Pyke, but the very beginnings of each man's life consistently go unlisted. Any help gratefully accepted. Thanks, Gordon Hogg Lexington, Kentucky USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Pieter Cornelissen Subject: Re: Royal sovereign >> Pieter Cornelissen -would you mind describing (or better still posting) the photo in question??? I have never seen a photo of reconstructed battleship of RS class wearing Victorian scheme. I am not saying that none exist, just that I haven't seen one yet. << Hi Darius SMML wraps long web adresses (SMML would become unreadable if it didn't off course) and I should have noticed that. Sorry about that. You can type in the web adress I gave or go to: http://www.warship.get.net.pl/WBrytania/WBrytania.html Click on 'Royal Sovereign class', scroll down to the picture symbol with Resolution and there you will find a picture of a Royal Sovereign class battleship in Victorian scheme with 6" casemates. Not sure if it is Resolution, but the class is very recognisable. Please be aware that the site sometimes behaves a bit strange under some browsers when java and javascript are turned on. Have been "lurking" for about 3 years I guess. John Collier-53-wife, 2 kids in college. 1 old dog, 1 cat. Cat specializes in PE removal. Live in Wantagh,NY. (Hello Felix) which is on Long Island. Work as a creative director for a small advertising agency in the Big Apple. Got back into modelling about 5 years ago after deciding to build the Arizona as a tribute to my uncle, who was aboard. I also tie flies and try to fish as much as humanly possible. Really, really slow builder but currently working on the Arizona (still), the aircraft carrier Roosevelt (for a friend's son, who served aboard) and collecting info on the USCG Northland, which I hope to scratchbuild at some point. Just amazed at all I have learned from this board and the depth of knowledge you all have. It has been a great learning experience. Thanks to all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Cunard Liners. I can confirm that QUEEN ELIZABETH and QUEEN MARY had black hulls. Cunard red changed very slightly starting with QUEEN MARY. Prior to that HUMBROL # 174 was the best approximation. After that a very tiny touch of yellow should be added giving a slightly more orange appearance. And while on the subject of Cunard the membership might like to answer this trivia question. Which was the first Cunarder to be named for a Queen? The news is indeed sad. Many of us have been the recipients of his astute advice and his legendary generosity over many years. The 1:1250/1200 model community has lost a great friend. This book gives drawings and a description of and costs about £30. I think it can be still got among others from Maritime Books Ltd Lodge Hill Liskard Cornwall UK.
