That is a totally fictional [prototype?????] model, definate;y not one of the serving OPV{2] Dumbarton Castle or Leeds Castle. Both of these ships were build by Hall Russel in Aberdeen [now defunct] << Thanks George. I suspected it was a promotional model, as advertised. It was likely made while the bidding was on....possibly for what became the Castle class, late 70s/early 80s. There are some differences from the Castles as I see, but enough similarities to indicate that Vickers (if in fact the seller has ID'd the builder correctly) designed to the same MoD specs in competition for this OPV contract. In any event an interesting design model for a never-built ship. Iirc, Model Ships carried plans for another Vickers design mid-70s for a corvette, provisionally called Vedette. I think some modelers scratch-built from these plans. It's really dependent on your printer and the quality of the decal paper. I have access to a very high end colour proofer which reproduced my designs easily but the decal film silvered badly. My thought after all this was to just purchase aftermarket decals, unless you need something really exotic. In regards to the decal paper, you might try www.micromark.com they offer decal paper for inkjets but in a sample package. It's cheaper and you get one clear and one white inkjet decal paper sheet, plus one can of inkjet decal fixative. They also offer smaller quantity packets for 6.95. Might be a better route to experiment with. See their site at: http://tridenthobbies.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=NM&Product_Code=GUN403&Category_Code=GUN I have added this model to my wish list of future purchases, but it will have to wait until the budget recovers from today's arrival of the Trumpeter Yorktown and Leopold rail gun I purchased from Trident. If anyone has built or seen the Gunze QE2, please comment. << Mike, I know the Trident site lists the Gunze QE2 at 1/350, but I've checked a couple of other sources (Hobbylink Japan for one: http://www.hlj.com/cgi-perl/hljpage.cgi?GNZG-403), as well as my own admittedly failing memory (old age, doncha know), and I believe this kit scales at 1/450. Although to a smaller scale, it's still a pretty big kit, and Hobbylink Japan has some nice words to say about it - after reading them I might buy one! Joe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Ouellette, Lawrence M" Subject: Re: potential QM2 or other ocean liner models Mike, From the Ship Kit List at: http://www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/rajen.html >> Queen Elizabeth 2 (Cunard Liner) [1/450] {G-403} (mod) FH GOOD. It's a pretty good kit. IIRC, it represents the ship as she appeared in the late 1970s, with the first group of apartments built on her upper levels. To convert her to her appearance after her 1980s "refit" is quite a chore (ask me how I know) but for a sort of "first generation" QE2 you can build a beautiful model from this kit. The only thing I didn't really like was the funky scale -- nothing else in my collection was really 1:450 scale! Buy it and have fun with it. You won't be disappointed. (JMP) << I have this kit in a Revell (Spain? Mexico?) box, but have not built it (yet!) I think I paid about half that price (~$40) a few years back from a small shop that occasionally took in 2nd hand kits. Why is it that Gunze Sangyo charges double for the same kit from the same mold? (see: Titanic) I also haven't done my roll call yet, maybe Sunday. Looking to find some of Larry Sowinski's work in 1/500 scale, I have been trying to contact Mr. Sowinski for about two years and was just told he might be deceased.. can you pls help? Jim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: Hawk / Testors US Coast Guard cutter Hello all, For those who may not know, Testors has re-released their small model of the Coast Guard Cutter Bibb. This is their new series called "Easy Builder". There are 4 ships in all, an LST in 1/613 scale, a PT boat in 1/200 scale, and a Destroyer (Fletcher???) in 1/582 scale. The Bibb is about 6-1/2 inches long and is molded in white. Basic "31" decals, and they're made by Microscale. The kits are only $4.00 a piece. Rod. P.S., To the Captain: Thanks for the info on the Minesweeper. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: NAVYDAZE Subject: Re: Minesweeper & LSD Well, if you can get the molds, sign me up for a few of the models - the minesweeper and LSD were the only good kits that company did. Since I posed the problem to SMML I have received some very good advice from people in the business - curators, etc. The most effective treatment has been to set the book on end in bright sunlight, letting the pages fan out. The caution is to not overdo the exposure. Three hours maximum. The warning is that it's a one-time treatment not to be repeated. I picked a nice bright sunny day (rare in Danbury CT lately) and placed the book as instructed. Interestingly enough, when I began the exposure the pages bunched and stuck together but after a couple of hours all the pages seemed to be separated and quite dried out. I brought the book indoors and found the smell had almost completely disappeared. There is only a very slight little whiff of must/mold discernible. I'll consider the suggestion about charcoal etc. and keep you advised. Again, thanks. And yes - it's a really neat book with some great information. I might be interested in splitting an order - it would need to be posted to Australia, if that's practicable. Costs? Regards, Clive Canberra, Oz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Daniel Kurtz Subject: Re: Scratchbuilding small scales From: "Arthur Herrick" >> I have a 1947 book that might meet Kurtz's basic description; United States Navy WATERLINE MODELS And How To Build Them, by John Philips Cranwell and Samuel A. Smiley, 141 pages, 7 1/2 x 10, First Edition 1947, W. W. Norton & Co., Inc., New York. And From: CokerRE >> In reference to Mr. Kurtz's question about modeling in small scales, I think that the book he is looking for is US Navy Waterline Ship Models by Cranwell & Smiley published in 1948. << This sounds like a worthy and interesting book in it's own right (I will look for it) but don't think it's the book I remember. Those models were full hull, and I don't think there was any ship in it newer or more 'modern' than Colorado or Yorktown. And I'm almost certain that it was pre-war. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: GKingzett Subject: Thanks Recently, I asked the group for information on wireless telegraphy and the Great White Fleet. Dave Way of Huntington Beach, CA directed me to the Titanic Research and Modeling site where I found a great deal of information about Marconi and the various wireless installations in which he was involved. There was more information than I could comprehend (half wave forms? etc) but I did want to thank Dave for his help, it is very useful. And of course, now that the fires are not a problem, I suspect he will have to go out into the sunshine again, and abandon his modeling for a while. It's a real shame. Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: GUSDOCVILL Subject: Jim Johnson Jim, Thank you for your response. I know about the "jet engine test ramp". This thing is more like a "cage" and was from the deck the jet test ramp was on to the waterline. Grace and peace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, bless you and your beloved family forever. Gus Semper Fi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "John Rule" Subject: Santissima Trinidad I know somwone was looking for a large scale model of Santissima Trinidad. I can't help with that but Skytrex do a 1:700 scale version in white metal and brass. These models actually look really good. The range can be seen at http://www.skytrex.com . Just go to the Trafalgar Range.
