Hopefully if the distortion is not to serious that should work. George ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Hans Christensen" Subject: Re: Waterline models book The book I have with the title "Waterline Ship Models" written by Payr.-Lieut Commander E.C. Talbot-Booth. R.N.R. is published around 1937(the newest ships mentioned is Queen Mary, Athlone Castle and Stirling Castle all 3 completed in 1936).It is published by Sampson Low, Marston & Co. Ltd. London. The book is mentioned in the 1939 edition of Janes Fighting ships adv.page 49. The book covers British liners. I am surprised that Gene Larson mention Appleton_Century as the publisher. Are there another book with the same title and written by the same? What ships are described in the Appleton_Century book? If so, then I have something to look for. Coming to waterline ship model books, I can recommend those written by John Bowen, "Waterline ship models" from 1972, "Miniature Merchant ships" from 1997, "More Miniature Merchant ships" from 2003, all published by Conway Maritime press. Hans Christensen Denmark ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Roger Antrobus Subject: Deck Colour Hello Listees Can anyone please help with the deck colour of HMS Queen Elizabeth in 1943. I don't mean the wooden decks of the forecastle and quarterdeck, I mean the steel decks at higher levels. Red, green, grey, ..... ?? Roger Antrobus ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Jim Johnson" Subject: Re: Entex models >> It was made by the old ENTEX company << Entex was a company that was in business in the 70 and 80s. To the best of my knowledge, they did not manufacture any models ever. They imported a lot of Japanese kits, made their own instructions and decals (not very well I'm afraid) and put them in their own box. If there are old Entex kits available under another brand, it could be the original company put them out or the molds moved on to another company. Jim Johnson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Waterline Ship Models Talbot-Booth's book of this name is what got me started on miniature ship modelling. I purchased it in the UK about 1940 and used it to build my first models. I still have it on my bookshelf. The plans are pretty basic by today's standards and while showing all superstructure, basic hull form etc, does not show any deck fittings such as windlasses, anchor chains and the like. Derricks are not shown in plan view. Nevertheless I retain it for sentimental reasons. Far better today is John Bowen's MINIATURE MERCHANT SHIPS and MORE MINIATURE MERCHANT SHIPS, which include both historic and modern ships, published by Conway Maritime Press in the UK (USNIP in the USA). John is the editor of MODEL SHIPWRIGHT , a quarterly magazine, which usually includes an examples of his work. His plans are easy to read and include all the details any miniaturist would want to include on a model. California. I can't attest to his health, however. Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Darren Scannell Subject: NIMITZ stern cages Gus, Sorry I'm chiming in late on this, when the NIMITZ was built, '70 something, all the carriers had a smooth rear end (get yer minds out of the gutters). A lot of ports that the USN visited could not dock a Carrier, so they anchored and a barge was taken out and tied at the stern or side. I have photos of the RANGER like this when she visited Vancouver BC. I suppose the Navy didn't like having these barges dent and scratch their nice shiny hulls, so they installed the cages in the late 80's, early 90's. There are several different versions, but essentially they all have a walkway and large rubber pads in front and are used to tie up to. There are gangways that lower to the barge, you don't go via the cage. I've got a photo of the ENTERPRISE with a very short one installed, but most are tall with the walkway behind the padded bars. Some even have huge bouys on either side permanently mounted. I don't think they fold down, but they do come off when in drydock. Personally, I prefer the smooth rears (shhhh!!, dirty minds again) Regards, Darren Scannell (who hasn't answered roll call, because he's difficult, right Gary?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Mike Kear" Subject: Ink jet decal paper I'm in a yahoo group dedicated to creating decals on a home PC, as a means of trying to learn about this. It's not as simple as you might expect. The biggest problem with creating decals on your home printer is that few printers can print white. Most colour printers expect that you are printing on white paper, and therefore they "print white" as an absence of ink, rather than a presence of white ink. This is fine if you're printing on white paper, but if you're printing on transparent decal paper, it's not. To get around this problem, you have to either: [A] use an ALPS printer (getting rather old now) which have white ink [B] Paint a white patch on your model then apply the decal over the top of it. If you take this approach, you have to be careful to make sure your white patch is not going to be larger than the finished decal. [C] Use white decal paper instead of transparent, (or spray a coat of white gloss paint on the transparent decal paper) and then cut carefully around the decal so none of the white outside the decal remains. If anyone else wants to have a look at this yahoo group, it's at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rr-decal/ Cheers, Mike Kear Windsor, NSW, Australia Webmaster, Model Warship 72 www.modelwarship.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "RAY MEHLBERGER" Subject: Re: Cigarette smell in books I had a good friend who died of cancer last year. He gave me a bunch of his books once, not knowing he was going to go into remission, and they stunk of tobacco. He was a very heavy smoker of generic, unfiltered cigarettes (3 packs a day). However, he died of lyphoid cancer...not lung...like you might suspect. Anyways, I too was faced with the god awful smell of tobacco in his books. I went on line back then and was told to go to the local pet shop and get a bag full of cedar chips. They cell these to use for hampster or gerbal bedding. You put them into an old woman's nylon sock...just to keep them from getting all over the place..and then place the nylon full of the cedar chips in a cardboard box...with the book...or books. Inside of 2-3 days the smell will start to dissapear. Donno what the cure is for mold...however. You will have to find out the cure for that elsewhere. Hope this helps. Try putting book & 3-4 scoops into a closed bag for 24 hours. John Ratzenberger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: KenLMaster Subject: Re: decal paper I have used decal paper from Vita Cal and Bare Metal. The Vita Cal paper, white decal sheet, did not perform very well. The Bare Metal white paper did mujch better. I have also used the 'Bare Metal clear with good results. As I see it, the real trick is to gfet a good clear coat to put over the top. When I did not get the clear on real good, the art work bled and ran all over the place. Bare Metal has singal sheet packs and 3 sheet packs at a resonable price. I'm just a user who had good results from their material. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Craig & Elizabeth Andrews" Subject: Frigate-ferry Halladale Hello all, I'm trying to find information on the Townsend Bros vehicular ferry "Halladale", which operated between France and England from 1949 to 1962. She was built as the River class frigate (K417, F417) HMS Halladale launched in Jan '44 and operated as a frigate from 1944 until 1949. Would any member know of a drawing showing her as a ferry or any good photos. I have found a couple of nice pics on the net, but if i could find a little more it would be great. Thanks in advance Craig Sydney - Aus ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: david@dhathaway Subject: warship profile no 36 - plans for canonicus class monitors People While researching the availability of scale drawings for the US Civil War Canonicus class monitors with a view to making a model of one, I came across a reference to there being a good set of drawings for them in "Warship Profile No 36 - The US Navy Monitors of the Civil War". A hunt on-line using www.abe.com drew a blank and my local library catalgue didn't have a copy available for me to request. Is there a kind soul out there who has this book that would contact me off-list about providing me with a copy of the drawings from it? A good scan would be fine and easier to post :-) Many thanks in advance David ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
