Info about dates and personalities in the closing weeks of the war against Japan. A Walrus was sent out to pick up a downed pilot and was found but had not enough fuel to return to the carrier. They were picked up by a passing destroyer and the walrus had a few rounds shot into it and sunk. I seem to remember on the "roll call" a member named (TaT), Bert who served on Victorious at the time. Could you please contact me as I have a friend who is searching for this information about Dave, the Walrus pilot. Good luck, if you run into another snag contact me at; joetheartguy.jbh@verizon.net. The colors of the Monitor class were not just Black and Gray. Some had Lavender funnels, Light Gray turrets, etc. I have a lot of info on the Federal and Confederate fleet colors, Naval Jacks, ensigns, etc. Joe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: John Fraser Subject: roll call Am I the last one to respond to this thread? I'm a marine invertibrate analyst in Aberdeen UK, 40 with a partner but no kids, interests are all French warships, especially predreadnaughts, German and Russian predreadnaughts (anything with a big ram) and auxiliary steamers. I have too many things in the cupboard waiting to get out, including "Le Napoleon" by Imai, "CSS Alabama" by Revell and Mamoli, "Great Western" by Airfix..."Richelieu" by Heller....I could go on (I need to cut down!!). Nothing in the dockyard yet but my "Skirmisher" need a bit of attention and I've just bought a 1/48 model of "SS Great Britain" which'll need a little bit of repair after its long journey to me. I love this list!! John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: URUDOFSKY Subject: Re: Cigarette smell in books The cedar chips emit xylenes and other nasty chemicals, and using them to get rid of cigarette odor may be not be all that smart. Why not try an Ozone-generating bulb under very controlled conditions. Do they still make those? People used to have them in their smelly coal and potato bins in the basement. Ulrich Rudofsky ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Michael Gane" Subject: Re: Roll call What an interesting lot you are! Am brand new to SMML and most things modern. I expected discussions on ship topics, but not smelly books! I am a retired copper aged fifty-five with a wife and two kids ( left home) and two cats ( wish they would ). Like most people in the UK I started with Airfix kits and bought one whenever I had enough pocket money. Then I "grew up" and did not touch a model for for many years until I got myself a 1/8th Pocher car kit. From there I went to my first love and that is ships. My store holds too many plank on wood ships and quite a few plastic warships. On the slipway is a 1/96th Cossack and for the first time a resin kit in the guise of White Ensign's Janus. I hope I can do it justice. Finally, there appears to be a dearth of information on Tribal Class destroyers of the thirties. Any ideas where I can find more so that I can do justice to this rather large model? Keep up the good work Mike Gane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Kevin W. Waterline ... Dear Mr. Christensen: I also have the Appleton-Century edition of E. C. Talbot-Booth's book on Waterline ship models. It was common then, and now, for books on ships and ship models published in the UK to be republished in the USA by an American publisher, essentially unchanged. After all, no translation is needed, and publishing and book production styles (arrangement of contents, TP layout, etc.) are virtually identical between the two countries (although we have been characterized as "Two peoples divided by a common language" ...). Indeed, the actual production was often done in the UK, or the plates were shipped to the USA where they were used with a new title page, binding, etc. These arrangements continue today; the best current example is between Conway Maritime Press in London and the Naval Institute Press in Annapolis, Maryland. This is the entry for the Appleton-Century edition of Talbot-Booth from the bibliography of my collection. I suspect you'll find the contents identical to the UK edition, but if you don't, please get back to me with the details of yours so I can put it on my want list! Talbot-Booth, E.C. I have also tried all the inkjet decal systems. Most do not do as well as hoped, however, I have just tried the new decal system put out by Testors and I am really impressed. The decals are top notch. However, they still lack the white and metalic colors of the ALPS. Shuey" Subject: Re: warship profile no 36 - plans for canonicus class monitors >> While researching the availability of scale drawings for the US Civil War Canonicus class monitors with a view to making a model of one, I came across a reference to there being a good set of drawings for them in "Warship Profile No 36 - The US Navy Monitors of the Civil War". A hunt on-line using www.abe.com drew a blank and my local library catalgue didn't have a copy available for me to request. Is there a kind soul out there who has this book that would contact me off-list about providing me with a copy of the drawings from it? A good scan would be fine and easier to post :-) << David: I wish you luck on your search. In the waning days of the "Profiles" publishing venture they announced a number of planned profiles that they never actually got around to publishing before they ceased printing. This Monitor number might be one of the ones they never got around to. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Douglas Simpkin Subject: Re: moldy book I've never had the opportunity to try this (and I don't know who of us have the equipment), but my physicist brother-in-law suggested putting moldy books under a vacuum. Not a Hoover, but a scientific vacuum pump and bell jar assembly that you may remember from your high school experiment days. This makes eminent sense, as even a moderate vacuum would suck the mold spores out of the book. Indeed, a brief Internet search yields moldy book cleanup with a HEPA-filtered vacuum at: http://www.hawaii.edu/ehso/mold.htm http://preserve.harvard.edu/guidelines/mold.html There's lots of info on book preservation on the web: http://lcweb.loc.gov/preserv/presfaq.html http://www.lib.washington.edu/Preservation/preservationfaq1.html http://www.library.uni.edu/speccoll/prespage.html Doug ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "James Baumann" Subject: Flags flown by HMS Furious in 1918 during the SSZ 59 airship landings.... is my new OBSESSIVE quest.... Does anyone know what the flags were that were on the signal hoist on the port side on HMS Furious while the airship ssz 59 was landing in 1918?? There is a famous photograph of the bridge area of HMS Furious showing the blimp having landed on the aft deck and showing a large hoist of flags hanging limply in the feeble breeze.... I am armed with one of Duane Fowlers( Dunagain decals) sheets of Royal navy signal flags etc, the diorama of the loose cannon HMS FURIOUS 1918 1/700 is now finished and rigged, the airship is about to be persuaded to 'float' above the deck with all her attendant 'catchers' racing about on the deck.... ALL I NEED TO KNOW NOW IS THAT FLAG HOIST....!! Hopefully, by this next weekend I will have added to and updated my lists of drawings. The warships are now up to 228 different types. (although I'm still working hard on the Camper & Nicholson MTB designs). (Much against my better nature)!
